Radon Action Month, Cleveland County
Did you know January is Radon Action Month and we in Cleveland County have a chance to join others from across NC in testing our homes and taking action, if needed, to reduce radon levels. Radon is an odorless, colorless, tasteless an naturally occurring radioactive gas. It is produced through the natural decay of uranium found in most rocks and soil. Radon can enter our homes through cracks and holes in the foundation. It is the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers and is the second leading cause of lung cancer. The only way to know whether or not your home has an elevated radon level, is to conduct a radon test. FREE (short-term) radon test kits are available at the NC Cooperative Extension Cleveland County Center, 130 South Post Road, Suite 1, Shelby,NC. Call Nancy Abasiekong, Extension Agent, Family & Consumer Sciences, at 704-482-4365, to pick up your FREE radon test kit. The radon test kits are made available through NC Radon (www.ncradon.org).
