South Mountain State Park, 3001 South Mountains Park Avenue, Connelly Springs, NC, January 2018 Programs:
Saturday, January 6 - "Backpacking 101" - Join Jeff Newton for an introductory class on backpacking. Participants will learn about proper clothing, trail cooking, basic first-aid and how to set up a tent. Meet at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm.
Saturday, January 6, 13, 20, 27 - "Wintergreen Hike" -Enjoy a leisurely walk along the Hemlock Nature Trail, and learn about some of the many plant species that stay green all year long. Meet at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 11:00am and 2:00pm for this easy one mile walk.
Sunday, January 7 & 14 - "Skulls & Skins" - Drop by between 2-3:00pm and hear about some of the animals that call South Mountains State Park home.
Sunday, January 7, 14 & 28 - "Fly Fishing 101" - Get Hooked! Join angler Jeff Newton at the Visitor Center at 2:00pm for an introductory class on fly fishing. Please bring all personal equipment available. Classes may vary based on interest and skill level of the participants. North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission fishing regulations still apply.
Sunday, January 21 & 28 - "Black Bears" - How dangerous are black bears? Can we coexist? Why are black bears so unique? What should I do if I see a black bear? The program will begin at 2:00 pm in the Visitor Center.
Saturday, January 27 - "Wilderness Survival 101" - Wilderness Survival 101 will cover basic survival information as covered in the Boy Scouts of America handbook. Topics covered will include basic first aid, shelter and others based on class interest and instructor discretion. Program will be presented by park volunteer, Jeff Newton, who also teaches Fly Fishing 101 and has a great deal of experience in the outdoors. Program is free and open to the public. Please meet at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm.

Cleveland County Schools Preschool Screening
Cleveland County Schools Preschool Screening for the 2018-2019 preschool classes will be: March 19-23, 2018 (no make-up screening will be offered.) Location: Office of School Readiness, 308 W. Marion Street Building B, Shelby, NC 28150 (location of old Shelby Middle School, small building near tennis courts. Parking is in back.) This is for children who live in Cleveland County and will be 4 years old by August 31, 2018. For more information or to schedule a screening appointment, please call 704-476-8064 between the hours of 8:30am - 3:00pm. Appointments will be made until all are booked. No appointments will be made after February 24, 2018. Screening provided by appointment only.
