Neighborhood Calendar July 15th edition
Boys & Girls Club Summer Day Camp

    The Boys & Girls Club of Cleveland County has a limited number of openings for the last month of the 2010 Jack Schweppe Summer Day Camp. Registrations, first-come first-served are being held weekdays, 8 AM to 5:30 PM. at the Boys & Girls Club building, 412 West Sumter Street, directly behind Shelby Middle School in Shelby. Day Camp runs weekdays, 8:00 AM until 5:30 in the evening with the program schedule varying daily. Campers participate in structured daily Club activities in which they are placed with children of like age. The program is open to all boys and girls, rising first graders through age 14. Financial Assistance is available with regular Day Camp session fees based on a sliding scale according to income. “Funeral Home Tours” – Tour includes a look into the embalming room (optional), a visit to the selection room, and presentation by a funeral service professional discussing pre-needs, pre-planning, cremation, and ways to memorialize your loved ones.

South Mountains State Park


Summer Kid’s Club


Join a Park Ranger this summer to learn all sorts of fun stuff about water critters, trees, animals, and fish just to name a few. Programs will be offered now to August 19th. The same program will be offered twice a week every Tuesday at 11:00 am and Thursday at 2:00 pm.  See below for program schedule and descriptions.


7/17 – “Animals of the South Mountains” – Join a Park Ranger and learn about the many animals that call South Mountains home. The program will begin at 11:00 am in the Visitor Center auditorium. 


“Streamside Hike” – Join a Park Ranger at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 2:00 pm for a streamside hike along theh Jacob Fork River.


7/18– “Tree ID Hike” – Join a Park Ranger for a 1.0 mile hike along the Hemlock Nature Trail. Tree identification will be the focus of this hike. Meet at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 11:00 am.


“Caddisfly Cases” – Kids are introduced to the life cycle of an aquatic insect and its adaptation as they construct their own caddisfly cases. Join a Ranger at the Visitor Center at 2:00 for this fun activity.


7/24 & 7/25– “Streamside Hike” – Join a Park Ranger at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 11:00 am for a streamside hike along theh Jacob Fork River.


“What’s in the Water?” – How many different kinds of critters live in the river?? Join a Park Ranger in the stream to turn over some rocks and learn more about what you might find there. Come prepared to get wet!! Meet at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm.


7/31 – “Animals of the South Mountains” – Join a Park Ranger and learn about the many animals that call South Mountains home. The program will begin at 11:00 am in the Visitor Center auditorium. 


“Birds of Prey” – Join a Park Ranger at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm and learn about some of the birds of prey found in the South Mountains. You will learn about the distinguishing characteristics of these animals, and find out why they are called birds of prey.

Cleveland County Memorial Library


7/20 – Tuesday – Do the “WRITE” thing! Summer Writing Club, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. –  Do the “WRITE” thing and join the summer writing club at the Cleveland County Memorial Library. COME ON IT”LL BE FUN! The writing club is for rising 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. The first meeting will be on Tuesday July 20 at 6:30 pm. After that, we will meet every OTHER week. Please call the library at 704-481-1234 to register your young writer. If possible, it would be helpful if your child would bring a three-ring binder, notebook paper, and a pencil or eraser pen.


Now-7/28 – Make Waves at Your Library Teen Summer Reading Program, 3:00-4:00 p.m. –  Cleveland County Memorial Libary, Large Meeting Room.  Make Waves with the Library and enjoy our summer reading program. The program is open to all young adults in grades 7th through 12th grade. Summer reading will begin on Wednesday, June 16th at 3:00 p.m. The program will be every Wednesday, except for the week of July 5th-9th, 2010. The program is free and open to all young adults who wish to attend. There will be special events throughout the summer and ou can read books on your reading level for fantastic prizes. Now-7/30 – Water Your Mind – READ, Adult Summer Reading Program: Cleveland – Don’t let your mind dry up this summer. Cleveland County Library System. Register and use your book review prize entry forms to enter into weekly drawings for fabulous prizes! Now-8/5 – Make A Splash @Your Library Children’s Summer Reading Program - June 14-August 5, 2010, 10:00-11:00 AM – The theme for the week of July 11th is High Seas Adventure. The program is for children ages pre-school to 6th grade will meet every Wednesday. Children will read books on their reading level and the books must come from the library. “A Day in the Life of Cleveland County” – Exhibit: Now through - July 29th – You’re invited to the Opening Reception. This is a viewers choice competition, come vote for your favorite photograph.


“Shavings & Thrums” – A juried exhibition that seeks to showcase a wide range of outstanding works related to fiber and wood media. Contemporary, innovative and traditional works created with fiber or wood as the primary media are welcome. Entry deadline: July 30.

Windjammers Christmas Run In July


   The Windjammers Motorcycle Club will have their “Christmas Run In July” Saturday, July 17th with a $10.00 donation. The Run will start at Cleveland Mall at 4:00 pm, and ends at the Windjammers Clubhouse. There will be a Steak Dinner with Music by “Crimson Kiss”. Family Swim Theme Nights

2010 Back-To-School Supplies Project


   Applications will be taken July 19th, 20th, and 21st from 9:00 - 11:30 am and 1:30 - 4:00 pm at the Greater Cleveland County Baptist Association, located at 1175 Wyke Rd., Shelby. Parents must bring: parent’s valid ID showing correct address, Children’s Social Security Card or Medicaid Card, Children’s Birth Certificate or Valid ID verifying their age. Applications will NOT be taken without this information. The back-to-school party and pick-up will be on August 7th from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon.


 


Blood Drive at Neal Senior Center

Springmore Bulldogs Basketball Skills Camp at Crest High School


   The Deadline Sign-up date for the Basketball Skills Camp is Saturday, July 24th at Crest High School. Camp dates are July 26 thru July 30th; time is Mon.-Thurs. 4 pm - 8 pm, and Friday 4 pm - 6 pm; Cost is $40.00 per camper; ages 10-14 years old (boys and girls) at Crest High School. Carolina Panthers Junior Training Camp


    The Carolina Panthers Junior Training Camp event will take place on Monday, August 2 at 9:00 am. To attend the Panthers Camp, parents must sign up children at Polkville Park on Saturday, July 17th. Sigh ups will be from 2-4 pm, and only the first 200 children will be able to participate. Boys and girls from any Cleveland County School grades K-7th are welcome. More details will be available at sign ups.     We will have a FUNdraiser Saturday, July 17th beginning at 5:00 pm at Casar Park. Citizen’s Police Academy


    The Shelby Police Department is currently taking applications for our Citizen’s Police Academy scheduled to start August 5th, 2010. This will be an eight-week class that will meet each Thursday from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the Excel Youth Academy located at 706 Julius Street. The classes are designed to educate citizens on how our police department operates on a daily basis. Due to the sensitive nature of police work, a background check will be conducted to ensure you meet our eligibility requirements. You must meet te following requirements: • Must be at least 18 years of age • Live, work or attend school in Shelby, NC • No felony convictions • No misdemeanor convictions within the past three years. The Chief of Police may waive any of the requirements.
