Kidz Around Summer Child Care Program


The Kidz Around Child Care began our summer program at ELIZABETH SCHOOL on June 10 and operate through August 24, (day before school starts). The program is open to any child who is enrolled in Cleveland County Schools. The program will operate from 6:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. The cost will be $85.00 per week, $80.00 per week for additional siblings.


The weekly fee includes the cost for all field trips; parents are responsible for any meals purchased while on field trips and spending money the child may need. Students will be charged on a weekly basis and WILL NOT BE CHARGED FOR THE FULL WEEKS THEY DO NOT ATTEND. Payment is due on Monday in advance each week. We will participate in the Cleveland County Schools Free Lunch Program. The lunches will begin on June 10th and run through August 20th. We will provide a weekly menu for parents with children enrolled in the program. A snack will be provided in the morning and afternoon.


The program will provide safe, well-supervised activities for grades k-5 (students entering kindergarten and students entering the 6th grade). Children will be divided into separate groups depending on grade and enrollment.  


Other activities will be geared toward age and will include water days (with special projects); visits from the fire department and swimming at Gardner Webb and Shelby City Park for 2nd – 5th Grades.   The summer program will be going on field trips, which may include the Hiddenite Emerald Mine, Dan Nicholas Park, Discovery Place, Tweetsie Railroad and Hickory Dickory Dock. All students will be required to purchase a $10.00 camp T-shirt to wear on each field trip.   A full set of operational policies and field trips along with a weekly schedule will be available to parents with children in the program.

Summer Kid’s Club


Join a Park Ranger this summer to learn all sorts of fun stuff about water critters, trees, animals, and fish just to name a few. Programs will be offered now to August 19th. The same program will be offered twice a week every Tuesday at 11:00 am and Thursday at 2:00 pm.  See below for program schedule and descriptions.


July 1 – “Skulls and Skins” – Join a Park Ranger and learn about some of South Mountains animals and their adaptations.  Please meet at the Picnic Shelter in the Jacob Fork Parking Area.


7/3 – “Animals of the South Mountains” – Join a Park Ranger and learn about the many animals that call South Mountains home. The program will begin at 11:00 am in the Visitor Center auditorium.


“Black Bears: Majestic Creatures of the Wild” – How dangerous are black bears? Can we co-exist? Why are black bears so unique? What should I do if I see a black bear? The program will begin at 2:00 pm in the Visitor Center.


7/4 & 7/11– “Tree ID Hike” – Join a Park Ranger for a 1.0 mile hike along the Hemlock Nature Trail. Tree identification will be the focus of this hike. Meet at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 11:00 am.


“Creatures of the Night” – Meet in the Visitor Center auditorium at 2:00 pm to learn about some of our local nocturnal creatures. Note: Thi program will NOT have any live specimens.

7/24 & 7/25– “Streamside Hike” – Join a Park Ranger at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 11:00 am for a streamside hike along theh Jacob Fork River.


“What’s in the Water?” – How many different kinds of critters live in the river?? Join a Park Ranger in the stream to turn over some rocks and learn more about what you might find there. Come prepared to get wet!! Meet at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm.


7/31 – “Animals of the South Mountains” – Join a Park Ranger and learn about the many animals that call South Mountains home. The program will begin at 11:00 am in the Visitor Center auditorium. 


“Birds of Prey” – Join a Park Ranger at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm and learn about some of the birds of prey found in the South Mountains. You will learn about the distinguishing characteristics of these animals, and find out why they are called birds of prey.

Now-7/28 – Make Waves @ Your Library Teen Summer Reading Program, 3:00-4:00 p.m. –  Cleveland County Memorial Libary, Large Meeting Room.  Make Waves with the Library and enjoy our summer reading program. The program is open to all young adults in grades 7th through 12th grade. Summer reading will begin on Wednesday, June 16th at 3:00 p.m. The program will be every Wednesday, except for the week of July 5th-9th, 2010. The program is free and open to all young adults who wish to attend. There will be special events throughout the summer and ou can read books on your reading level for fantastic prizes. Now-8/5 – Make A Splash @Your Library Children’s Summer Reading Program - June 14-August 5, 2010, 10:00-11:00 AM – Come to the Cleveland County Library system and Make a Splash with our Children’s  Summer Reading Program. The program is for children ages pre-school to 6th grade will meet every Wednesday. Children will read books on their reading leveland the books must come from the library. Prizes will be awarded for the number of books read. Books are recorded on a reading log, which is provided by the library. Cleveland County Memorial Library now offers Mango Languages Online Database – The Cleveland County Memorial Library is now proud to offer Mango Languages. Mango Languages is an online language learning system that helps you learn a variety of foreign languages, such as Spanish, Italian, French, German, Russian and English as a Second Language.  It uses real life situations and actual conversations to teach a new language. You can utilize Mango Languages Basic Courses to learn some basic words and phrases for your business trip or an overseas vacation. You can also utilize Mango Languages Complete Courses, to learn more than just basic language skills. Mango Languages ccan be accessed both in the Library and from your home. You can access mango Langauges by clicking on the Mango Icon on the Cleveland County Memorial Library website (http://www.ccml.org). Happy Birthday America Fireworks Show


& Independence Day Celebration At Cleveland Mall July 2nd


    Cleveland Mall’s annual Independence Day celebration and fireworks show will take place Friday, July 2 from 4:30 to 10pm providing fun and entertainment for families in and around Cleveland County. The festivities will begin at 4:30pm with rides and inflatables from Miracle Amusements Inc. for adults and children to enjoy.  Everyone can delight in the mouthwatering festival food to be had, including funnel cakes, candy apples, and cotton candy. The Party in the Plaza will start at 6pm with Captain Ron’s Beach & Boogie playing hits from the Fifties to today. A military tribute ceremony will be held at 9pm to honor our veterans and those serving in the Armed Forces.  The National Anthem will be performed by Bucky Reynolds, music major at Gardner-Webb University. The evening will come to a close with an impressive fireworks display sure to amaze observers of all ages. Be sure to take advantage of savings inside the mall during the Independence Day mall-wide sidewalk sale. Piecemakers Quilt Guild


“Piecemakers Quilt Guild meets the first Wednesday of each month from 10AM – 12PM at the Lincoln Co. Senior Center, Lincoln Campus of Gaston College, 511 Aspen St., Lincolnton. We are here to teach and encourage those interested in the art of quilting. Visitors are welcome. Meetings include a business meeting, show-and-tell, and a program related to quilting. On July 7th members meet for the annual picnic. Members also meet the third Wed. of each month 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. to work on our community projects. CCC Classes For Displaced Workers 


    If you or someone you know is a displaced worker and may be interested in exploring job opportunities in the healthcare industry, call or come by the Continuing Education Department at Cleveland Community College to learn more about Healthcare Basics classes that are being offered. This class will explore a variety of job opportunities in the healthcare industry. Classes will meet two days a week for 10 weeks. CCC Director of Workforce and Career Development, Holly Sweat, will lead the second phase of the 10 week session which will include advanced interviewing skills, advanced resume preparation and the Myers Briggs Personality Assessment. The Continuing Education Department at Cleveland Community College is offering displaced workers an opportunity to sharpen their “soft skills” set through a series of classes focused on improving problem solving, communication, and teamwork skills for displaced workers. These are the skills many employers evaluate during the hiring process. Class begins on July 7 and will meet on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. through July 23, 2010. Family Swim Theme Nights

Lattimore 4th Of July Celebration


    Are you looking for an inexpensive way to celebrate Fourth of July with the family? Look no further! The town of Lattimore would like to invite you to attend the annual Fourth of July Parade and Celebration on Saturday, July 3rd. The parade lineup will begin at 8:00 a.m. and the parade march will begin on Towery Road/Oak Drive at 9:00 a.m. Parade entries will include floats, antique cars, horses, tractors, and much more! At the conclusion of the parade, a patriotic program will be presented at the recreation park of Lattimore Baptist Church. The celebration will begin around 10 a.m. and will include the recognition of veterans and entertainment. This year’s featured entertainment is the Leonard McSwain Band. This favorite local group will play a variety of bluegrass and Gospel numbers. An “air-bounce” ride for the children will ensure that there is fun for entire family! Since no celebration is complete without food, the Lattimore Baptist Church youth group will be selling both country ham, sausage, and livermush biscuits and drinks along the parade route beginning at 8:15 a.m. Biscuits, hotdogs, drinks, and homemade desserts will be sold at the recreation park. All proceeds will go toward funding youth activities such as summer camp. 16th Annual High Country Bead, Gem, Mineral & Jewelry Show

Boys & Girls Club Summer Day Camp


    The Boys & Girls Club of Cleveland County is now holding registration for the 2010 Jack Schweppe Summer Day Camp.   Open registration will be held weekdays from 2 PM to 7 PM. at the Boys & Girls Club building, located at 412 West Sumter Street, directly behind Shelby Middle School in Shelby.  Parent Packets, which contain all registration materials and program information, are available during the Club’s regular After-School program hours. Registration is ongoing, space permitting, first come-first served. The 2010 Summer Day Camp schedule offers three sessions, each spanning three weeks.  Session 2 is Tuesday, July 6 through Friday, July 23.  Session 3 is Monday, July 26 through Friday, August 13. Day Camp operates weekdays from 8:00 AM to 5:30 in the evening with the program schedule varying daily.  Campers participate in structured daily Club activities in which they are placed with children of like age. The Jack Schweppe Summer Day Camp is open to all boys and girls, rising first graders through age 16. Registration restrictions apply to campers 15 & 16 years of age. Parents wishing to register these older campers should contact the Club office for additional details. Financial Assistance is available with regular Day Camp session fees based on a sliding scale according to income. Details on fees are available through the Boys & Girls Club office. Kings Mountain Historical Museum


    The Museum is pleased to announce the opening of What Did Our Ancestors Wear? which will run through August 21. Many examples of clothing, accessories, undergarments from the 18th to mid 20th century. Featuring a “dress-up corner” for children to try on reproduction clothing and have their picture taken. The Museum is located in the Old Post Office at 100 East Mountain Street, Kings Mountain, NC. Our hours are Tuesday-Saturday from 10:00-4:00. Free Admission. Citizen’s Police Academy


    The Shelby Police Department is currently taking applications for our Citizen’s Police Academy scheduled to start August 5th, 2010. This will be an eight-week class that will meet each Thursday from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the Excel Youth Academy located at 706 Julius Street. The classes are designed to educate citizens on how our police department operates on a daily basis. Due to the sensitive nature of police work, a background check will be conducted to ensure you meet our eligibility requirements. You must meet te following requirements: • Must be at least 18 years of age • Live, work or attend school in Shelby, NC • No felony convictions • No misdemeanor convictions within the past three years. The Chief of Police may waive any of the requirements.
