Habitat for Humanity
       Habitat is now accepting applications for a Habitat Home.  Applicants must currently live in sub-standard housing, have sufficient income to pay for an interest-free mortgage but not enough income to qualify for a conventional mortgage, live in Cleveland County for the past 12 months, and contribute sweat equity.  Call Shelby Gettys at 704-482-6200 to request an application or pick one up at the Habitat ReStore, 323 W. Summer Cinema At Don Gibson Theatre
      Summer Cinema returns to the Don Gibson Theatre. This week’s movie is Nanny McPhee Returns. The movie starts at 7:00 PM, admission is $1 but the popcorn is free. Cleveland County Memorial Library
   Readers of all ages will travel the globe this summer as the Cleveland Memorial Library presents “One World, Many Stories,” during the summer reading program.  Children will explore places from Africa, China , England , Italy , and Japan to Mexico through stories, crafts, music, games, dance, and other activities.  The Summer Reading Program is open to young people, pre-school through 6th grade, with programs, story-hours, reading for prizes and more.  The Summer Reading Program will last six weeks now to July 28th. No pre-registration is required and all programs are free to the public.  Locations and times are as follows:

Shelby Parks & Recreation Baseball
       Summer Schedule for City Park Carrousel and Rotary Train (through August).  Tuesday - Friday 10 AM - 1 PM and 5-8 PM. Saturday 1-6 PM and Sunday 1:30-6 PM. All rides are 50¢.    Shelby City Park is offering gymnastics clinics this summer.  Classes run Monday through Thursday and include instruction on tumbling, balance beam, bars, rings and tumbl-trak.  Instruction is available for children ages 3 and up.  The weeks are: July 18-21 and August 8-11. GSCT Presents Baseball Play
       GSCT presents hilarious Baseball Play! Just in time for the American Legion World Series, Greater Shelby Community Theatre is producing the laugh-out-loud baseball comedy, “Rounding Third”! Sometimes emotional, sometimes funny, the PG 13 play (directed by Linda Bogan) tells the story of 2 Little League baseball coaches with very different coaching philosophies. Performances will be at the Keeter Auditorium, CCC. Performance dates/times are July 22 and 23 at 7:30pm and July 24 at 2:30pm. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students. Discount presale tickets are available at area outlets. Stay tuned for ENCORE performance dates and times.
 
 Youth Rally At The Holly Oak Park Gym
       Higher Focus and Push Back Ministries, along with local area ministries, in conjunction with Shelby City Parks & Recreation will hold a Youth Rally at the Holly Oak Park (gym) on Saturday, July 23, from 4 p.m.-8 p.m. They will be giving out clothes and food. There will be  Help Booths for pregnancy resources, college guidance and health department issues, etc. Bands, singing, preaching, prize drawings and ministry dancing will all be a part of the activities. Relay For Life
        Relay for Life will have 1 more Bank night, July 26, 5 pm - 7 pm. Please have your cash and change converted into checks at First National Bank. It will speed up the processing time. They will be on 1st floor in the T. R. Harris Building of the Hospital.

2nd Annual Zoe’s Fun Run
        The 2nd Annual Zoe’s Fun Run-In memory of Zoe Bachman benefiting the National Niemann-Pick Disease Foundation. 5K/10K Run & Kids 1 mile run Saturday, August 13, 2011 begins at 8am at the Gazebo downtown Kings Mountain. Registration fee for 5K & 10K: $20/person (thru July 29th, after July 29th fee is $25) Kids 1 mile run: $10/person (thru July 29th, after July 29th fee is $12) Race day registration @7am. Awards given to top 3 males & females of each age group. Boys & Girls Club
CC Pop Warner Warrior Football Program
   Registration is underway for the Cleveland County Pop Warner Warrior Football Program. Sign-ups will be ongoing, space permitting. Registrations are being held at the Boys & Girls Club building at 412 West Sumter Street, directly behind Shelby Middle School in Shelby. Any youth, ages 10 through 13, qualifying on the weight restrictions can play. Age cutoff is July 31. Player’s birthdates for ages 10-12 need to be between August 1, 2001 and July 31, 2004 and between August 1, 2000 and July 31, 2001 for age 13. Weight restrictions for ages 9-12 are 85-135lbs. and for 13 years of age is 85-120 lbs. For more information call the Boys & Girls Club at 704-471-2582.  Program starts the end of July.

Carrie Heavner Foundation 5K Run/Walk
   The Carey Heavner Foundation will be holding the 2ND annual care for Carey 5k run/walk on Saturday, August 20, 2011 @ 8:00 AM (early registration @ 7:00 AM. The run will start and end at the Shelby city park. The “care for Carey 5k run/walk” Scheduled for AUGUST 20, 2011, Is a Fundraising event being held to support the Carey Heavner Foundation. The Carey Heavner Foundation provides financial assistance to families that has a child battling Cancer and was established by Mike And Kim Heavner shortly after Careys courageous fight against Cancer in 2010. Alzheimer’s Association Caregiver Education Conference -
   The Alzheimer’s Association Caregiver Education Conference - Sept. 15 - Flint Hill Baptist Church, Shelby, NC. This full day conference will feature a variety of speakers on topics related to caring for a person with Alzheimer’s or related dementia. Community resources will be available to answer questions and offer information. Target audience includes family caregivers, professional caregiver, faith community members and anyone interested in learning more about the disease. Cost $10 per person.
