June 3, 2017 - "National Trails Day". We will be hosting a National Trails Day work day from 9:00-12:00. We have a job for everyone no matter what your skill level is. Pre-registration is required for this event by May 29th. Please call 828-433-4772 to register or for more information.
Sunday, June 4, 11 & 25, 2017 at 2:00pm. - "Fly Tying 101". Get Hooked! Join angler Jeff Newton at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm for an introductory class on fly tying. Please bring all personal equipment available. Classes may vary based on interest and skill level of the participants.
Sunday, June 4, 2017 - "General Park Program" Join a park Ranger in the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm to learn about South Mountains State Park. Participants will learn about user group activities, trails and points of interest.
SUMMER KID'S CLUB:
Thursday, June 15, 2017: "Salamanders" - Did you know that salamanders are amphibians? Join park staff at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 2:00 pm to learn more fun facts and participate in salamander collection. Come prepared to get wet.
Thursday, June 22, 2017: "Let's Talk Turkey" - Yelps, purrs, cuts and cackles. Join a Park Ranger and learn about Wild Turkeys in the South Mountains. Participants will learn about characteristics, habitat, populations, life history and vocalizations. Program starts at 2:00 pm at the Visitor Center.

Lost Playwrights, Hendersonville
Lost Playwrights will meet Saturday, June 3, 2017, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, in Kapplan Auditorium of Henderson County Library, 301 North Washington Street, Hendersonville, NC. Anyone interested in any aspect of theatre or creative writing is invited. There are no dues.
Shelby Lions Club
The Shelby Lions Club will be distributing USDA Commodities on Wednesday, June 7, 2017. Those who wish to fill out an application will need to go the fair ground on June 7. You only need to give your home address and must live in Cleveland County. If a person is unable to come in person, they may send a note stating the number in the family, their address and their whole family income, signed by them. The distribution is based on the number in the family and the income of the household.
Lincoln County Parks & Recreation
Lincoln County Parks and Recreation is pleased to announce the Splash Pads at both West Lincoln Park, 369 Hulls Grove Church Rd, Vale, NC and Beatty's Ford Park, 8335 Shipley Ln, Denver, NC will be open daily (weather permitting) from 10am-7pm. Splash Pad rules: No pets allowed. No skateboards, bikes, or scooters. Swim diapers are required. No food or drinks allowed on splash pad. For general safety, no climbing on splash pad elements. June 17, 2017 until October 14, 2017! In the 1920s, Cleveland County experienced an economic boom and bust, the heyday of the textile mills, the birth of the political engine known as the Shelby Dynasty, and improved education, healthcare, technology, and transportation systems. This area also saw violent disputes over labor rights and the racial inequity of the Jim Crow system in that decade. Visitors will be able to see the dramatic social, economic, and political changes reflected in the clothing, the music, the dances, the slang, and the products of the era. Admission is free!

Volunteers are the Heart of Hospice! Give a piece of your heart and become a trained Hospice Volunteer. For a small amount of time, you can make a BIG difference in someone's life. Hospice training is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about hospice care and the services provided to our patients in Cleveland, Gaston, and Lincoln Counties. This course is free! To get credit for the entire course, you will need to attend all days at one of the times offered. Hospice Cleveland County exists to provide high quality skilled compassionate care and support for individuals with a life-limiting illness, their families, and the community, regardless of ability to pay. Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month
On Wednesday, June 21, 2017, people around the world will participate in The Longest Day®, demonstrating love for those affected by Alzheimer's disease and commitment to changing the course of this disease for millions. Whether it's choosing a favorite activity, hosting an event or joining a team, participants will ignite a global conversation about Alzheimer's disease, the brain and other dementias as part of Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month® in June. Held annually on the summer solstice, The Longest Day symbolizes the challenging journey of those living with Alzheimer's disease and their caregivers. This is a day of hope, where participants will engage in their favorite activities - biking, hiking, swimming, playing bridge, knitting and more - to honor a caregiver, someone living with Alzheimer's, or someone they've lost to this devastating disease. Together, participants will raise funds and awareness to advance Alzheimer's Association® care, support and research programs.
