South Mountains State Park Events
Saturday, June 14, 11:00am and Saturday, June 18, 2:00pm at the Visitor Center - “Knot Tying 101”. Knot tying is a fundamental skill for many tasks. Whether you are a beginning climber, backpacker or just want to learn a few knots.
Saturday, June 14 - “What’s in the Water?” How many different kinds of critters live in the river? Join a Ranger in the stream to turn over some rocks and learn more about what you might find there. Come prepared to get wet. Meet at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm.
Sunday, June 15 & 29 - “Animals of the South Mountains”. Join a Park Ranger to learn about the many animals that call South Mountains home. The program will begin at 2:00 pm in the Visitor Center auditorium.
Saturday, June 21 - “South Mountains State Park: The Past, the Present, and the Future”. Join Ranger Waltz at the Visitor Center at 11:00 am for an informative presentation on the history and resources that have shaped South Mountains into the largest state park in North Carolina.
Saturday, June 21 - “NC State Ranger”. What does a Park Ranger do on a day to day basis? Meet in the Visitor Center auditorium at 2:00 pm.
Sunday, June 22 - “Birds: The Good, the Bad, and the Funny”. Join a Park Ranger at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm for an indoor program and a short hike to identify and to learn more about our feathered friends.
Sunday, June 22, 29 - “Fly Fishing 101” - Get Hooked! Whether you want to learn how to tie flies, develop your casting skills, or discover the joy and challenges of fly fishing for the first time, join anglers Jeff Newton and Bob Tupper at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm for an introductory class on fly fishing. All class materials will be provided free, and there will be optional fishing time in the Jacob Fork afterwards. North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission fishing regulations still apply.
Saturday, June 28 - “NC State Ranger”. What does a Park Ranger do on a day to day basis? Meet in the Visitor Center auditorium at 11:00 am.
South Mountains State Park is located south of Morganton off of old Highway 18. We welcome the community to join us for our monthly educational interpretive programs. Call the park office at (828) 433-4772 for more information.
Council on Aging/Neal Senior Center
Council on Aging/Senior Center, 100 T.R. Harris Drive, Shelby, NC will have the following events in February:
“Bingo” - Each Monday night (except holidays), at the Senior Center. Doors open at 5:30 (no admittance after 7:00pm). Jackpot up to $500. Public invited 12 years and up.
Tuesday, June 17, 5:30pm - “Seminar (Social Security and You)”, at Council on Aging. Presented by: Claire Emery, Financial Advisor of Merrill Lynch/Global Wealth Management. This seminar will cover the following information: the history of Social Security, current Landscape of Social Security, who is eligible for benefits, how to decide when to start taking benefits and strategies for maximizing benefits. Hospice Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC - June Calendar of Events:
“Reflections” Support Group, Wednesdays: June 18 and 25, 11:30am - 1:00pm, at the Hospice Cleveland County Administration Building. This grief sharing group meets for five weeks. No cost to anyone who has lost a loved one. If you plan to attend one of our groups, please make every effort to attend all five sessions. “Camp Mostly Smiles”, Friday, June 20, 9:00am - 3:00pm, at Shelby City Park, 850 W. Sumter Street, Shelby, NC. This is a one-day retreat for children ages 6 - 16 who are grieving the loss of a loved one. Participants will have the opportunity to express their grief through writing, crafts, play activities and group discussions. Professionals trained in grief and loss will facilitate the retreat. Zion Hill Baptist Church offers Health Screening
Zion Hill Baptist Church will offer a free health screening June 14, 7:00-10:00am. The screening consists of having blood drawn to check cholesterol, sugar, and other vitals. Results will be mailed to your address. Screening will be done by Blue Ridge Health Care of Morganton. Please fast before you come. A light breakfast will be available following the screening. Kings Mountain National Military Park, Blacksburg
The Kings Mountain National Military Park, Blacksburg, SC will hold a benefit concert in their amphitheater on June 14, 8:00 pm, featuring David Childers and The Overmountain Men. Proceeds benefit the Brigade of Friends, an all-volunteer nonprofit organization founded in 2000 to work with the National Park Service to provide support and funding for special projects at Kings Mountain National Military Park that aid in preserving the Park’s cultural and military history, protecting the Park’s environmental integrity, and enhancing the enjoyment of the Park by visitors and area residents. The KMNMP amphitheater seats 300; tickets are available now for $20. David Childers and The Overmountain Men are a local group of performers from Belmont, NC. The band is named after the militiamen who helped American forces win the battle of Kings Mountain in 1780. Tickets are available at all Cleveland County Chamber of Commerce offices, Gaston County Chamber of Commerce, Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce in Gaffney, SC, and from any member of the Brigade of Friends.

Life Enrichment Center Adult Day Care and Health Services
The Life Enrichment Center, 110 Life Enrichment Blvd., Shelby, NC will have a program on: “How do I help mom?” She has Alzheimer’s disease. Join Christie Ray from Home Instead at the Life Enrichment Center as she shares tips and ideas for you to help your loved one that’s been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Philadelphia Community Organization of Lawndale will host its 16th annual Juneteenth celebration on June 21, 12:00pm until 4:00pm, at 165 Schenck Farm Road, Lawndale, NC. There will be a parade starting at 12:00pm at the intersection Philadelphia Road and Selkirk Drive. Lineup at 11:30am. Activities to include free eye screening by NC Lions Inc. vision van, sponsored by the Lawndale Lions Club; a Classic Auto Show, and Bingo. There will be food and fun for everyone. Broad River Genealogical Society
The Broad River Genealogical Society will be going to the following field trip on June 21, 9:00am. They will leave from the Broad River Achieves Building at 1145 County Home Road. They will be going to the Berry Site in Burke County to observe as Archeologists excavate the Old San Juan Fort. The Spaniards build a Fort in the area in the 1560’s near one of the largest Indian Villages in the New World. The Indian Village was Joara. This was many years before James Town. This is the only time during the year its open to the Public. Everyone is welcome to join them. They are asking for a $5.00 donation and there will be vendors on site for food. Many will be eating at a Family Restaurant on 181 near the site. If you plan to drive park across the Road at the Putnam Baptist Church if you are parking your car and riding with someone park at the Achieves Building.
South Mountain Family Camp Summer Day Camp
South Mountain family Camp, 142 Mace Rd., Casar, NC announces Summer Day Camp for students going into 1st through 6th grade. June 23-27, 9:00-3:00. Only $50 for the whole week. Bring your lunch and come walk the P.A.T.H. with us. Learn about Christ through scripture, songs, crafts, games, creek stomping, hiking, water games. Fallston Fun Fest
The Fallston Fun Fest will be Saturday, June 28, at the Fallston Elementary School, Fallston, NC. 5:00pm - Parade (line up starts at 4:30 on Wilson Rd.); 5:30pm - Opening ceremony; 5:30pm until 8:30pm - Kids games/rides - Armbands $5 (including go fish and duck without armbands, these are a quarter each); Cake Walks; 5:30pm until 7:00pm - DJ with Calvin Hastings; 7:00pm until 10:00pm - Ocean Blvd.; 10:00pm - Fireworks. Cleveland County Animal Control New Hours
The Cleveland County Animal Control has new operational hours. Starting July 1, 2014. The Shelter will open Monday thru Friday from 10:00am til 4:00pm. Entries Needed for Lattimore 4th of July Parade. The Town of Lattimore is looking for individuals and businesses to participate in it’s annual Fourth of July Parade. Antique cars, tractors, churches, civic groups, and many other items and groups will be featured. Cleveland County Schools Preschool is accepting applications for the 2014-2015 school year. Office of School Readiness Program is for eligible children, 4 years of age or who will be by August 31, of this year. They will be given priority and 3 year old eligible children will fill any remaining openings.
