Mental Health Association
Survivor Suicide Support Group
   Survivors of Suicide Support Group, meets the last Tuesday of every month, 11:30am - 1:30 pm at the Cleveland Memorial Library. Sponsored by the Mental Health Association in Cleveland County, this support group offers support to those who have lost a loved one to suicide. All members of the group, including the facilitator, have experienced this unique loss. For details, contact the Mental Health Association at 704-481-8637 or mha@clevelandcountymha.org Family-to-Family Caregiver Support Group, meets every third Tuesday of the month, 6:30 - 8:00 pm at the Cleveland County Red Cross (1333 Fallston Road, Shelby, NC 28150) Co-sponsored by the Mental Health Association in Cleveland County and NAMI Rutherford/Cleveland, this support group offers a safe space for close relatives of persons suffering from a severe mental illness to share their experience with others in a similar situation. Piecemakers Quilt Guild
   Piecemakers Quilt Guild meets the first Wednesday of each month from 10AM - 12PM at the Lincoln County Senior Center, Lincoln Campus of Gaston College, 511 Aspen Street, Lincolnton, room 319. We are here to teach and encourage those interested in the art of quilting. Visitors and new members are welcome. Meetings include a business meeting, show and tell, and a program related to quilting. The  June 6th meeting will feature Linda Gunter demonstrating the X Block ruler. Gaston County Quilters Guild
   Gaston County Quilters Guild’s next meeting June 25th,  6:30 P.M. Our meetings are held on the 4th Monday of the month at Woodlawn Baptist Church 1101 N.Main St. in Lowell. This meeting demo is by Nancy Fisher and Suellen Grant to learn to hand Quilt.  Please bring a solid square of fabric as well as batting and backing fabric=Quilt sandwich, ready to quilt.  Also bring sewing kit, scissors, needle and thread and Quiting thimble.  Oh yes pad & pen. Cathy Stokes will also demo Re-purpose, Re-cycle an Re-use. Our on going charitable activities include but not limited to...Quilts for our Veterans.  Tote bag kits for the Women’s Shelter. Quits for stuffed animals for 1st responders to give out. They strive to preserve and promote the techniques, patterns and history of quilting through inspiration, education, fun ad fellowship.  Our work is designed to benefit and educate all persons interested in preserving, continuing, and advancing this art. South Mountains State Park
   Saturday, June 23 - What does a Park Ranger do on a day to day basis?  Meet in the Visitor Center auditorium at 11:00 am.
   Saturday, June 23 - “Let’s Talk Turkey” - Yelps, purrs, cuts and cackles.  Join a Park Ranger and learn about Wild Turkeys in the South Mountains.  Participants will learn about characteristics, habitat, populations, life history and vocalizations.  Program starts at 2:00 pm at the Visitor Center.
   Sunday, June 24  - “Animals of the South Mountains” - Join a Park Ranger to learn about the many animals that call South Mountains home.  The program will begin at 2:00 pm in the Visitor Center auditorium.
   Saturday, June 30 - “Tree ID Hike” - Join a Park Ranger for a 1.0 mile hike along the Hemlock Nature Trail.  Tree identification will be the focus of this hike.  Meet at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 11:00 am.

Solid Rock Garden, Lawndale
   Solid Rock Community garden in Lawndale will have regular work nights on Monday evenings at 6:00 pm, now through the summer months. If you enjoy gardening and want to help grow nutritious food for our neighbors - please join us. Shelby City Park Summer Day Camp
   The Shelby City Park Summer Day Camp began on Monday, June 11th and run for 10 weeks, ending on Friday, August 17. Camp ages are 5-12 years, as of the first day of camp they are attending. Day Camp hours are from 7:45 a.m. til 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Day Camp will be held at the Shelby City Park. Day Camp fees this year are $80 per week for city residents and $90 per week for all others. Siblings will receive a 10% discount. Camp fees include a camp tee shirt to be worn each Friday on field trips. Examples: Carowinds, skating, movies, bowling and many more. Parents may be responsible for field trip meals and any spending money the child may need. Fees are due on Thursdays in advance for the next week. Weekly calendars will be available on Friday for the next week. At sign-up, parent must bring all items below to avoid a second trip. (1) Completed application form (S); (2) First week’s fees and swim lesson fees - if applicable; (3) Copy of child’s birth certificate (if they did not attend last year); (4) Copy of child’s immunization records. Don’t let your child miss out on a great summer.
Hospice, Cleveland County
   Hospice Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Dr., Shelby  will hold the following events:
   “Reflections” Sharing Group - A grief sharing group will meet for six weeks, Tuesday, June 26, July 3, 10, 17 and 24, 5:30 p.m. -7:00 p.m.  in the Hospice Cleveland County Administration Building. No cost to anyone who has lost a loved one. Please RSVP to ext. 166 if you plan to attend.
Cleveland County Partnership For Children’s Planning Board Of Director’s Meeting
     The Cleveland County Partnership for Children’s Board of Directors will meet June 28, at 12:00 noon.  The meeting will be held at 312 W. Marion Street, Shelby, NC.  No public input session will be held at this meeting.

Summer Reading Program
   DREAM BIG…Summer Reading  - Calling all dreamers! Readers of all ages will explore the night this summer as Cleveland County Library presents “Dream Big – READ!”  Activities may include programs on wishes, dreams, bedtime, creatures of the night, and camping. The Summer Reading Program is free and open to ages 3 to 12 years.  The Pre-school program is on Tuesdays from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., and K-6th grade is on Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.  There is also a Pre-school and K-6th grade program on Mondays at the Spangler Branch Library. Polkville Independence Day Celebration
   The Town of Polkville and the Polkville Volunteer Fire Department will host an Independence Day Celebration on Saturday, June 30th. The fun begins at noon and will continue until midnight. There will be a car and bike show, kids programs, music by Sloan Tones and Dirty Grass Soul, and fireworks! Hot dogs will go on sale at 11:00am and there will be a benefit supper at the Fire Department. Everyone from everywhere is invited. For more information please go to www.polkvillevfd.org
Holland House Housewarming Shower
   NAMI Rutherford/Cleveland will host a Housewarming Shower for Holland House Drop-In Center, Thursday, June 21st from 6:00-8:00 PM. You are cordially invited to attend. Holland House is located at: 475 West Main Street, Forest City, NC 28043. Holland House Drop-in Center is operated by the Peer Support Resource Exchange (PSRE) and is a non-profit organization.  They do not provide any direct billable services. However they recognize the needs of their peers.  Holland House is a place for adults with mental health issues to meet and talk with their peers; and hang out among friends and people who care when other services are not open. Peer Support is also a place where one can learn about the resources in the community. (This shower will take place in lieu of the regular June Education Forum. Our next Education Forum will be in September. No Education Forums in July or August!) Holland House
is now open on weekends (Friday-Sunday) from 1-9 p.m. It is a drop-in center which provides a social outlet for those with mental illness. If you have questions call 704-434-6921.
Life Enrichment Center, Stroke Support Meeting
   Speech therapist Lori McKee will present a program on swallowing for those who have had a stroke at the next meeting of the stroke support group Monday, June 25, at 5:30 p.m. at the Life Enrichment Center in Shelby. The meeting is free of charge and open to the public, for both those who have had a stroke and their care partners. Some of those who attend had a stroke years ago and others, more recently. The Shelby Life Enrichment is located at 110 Life Enrichment Blvd., just off Fallston Road, between Teddy and Meekins law offices and Cornerstone Dental Associates. Fallston Funfest
   The Town of Fallston will hold their “Fallston Fun Fest” on Saturday, June 30 at Fallston Elementary School. The parade lineup begins at 5:00 p.m. (starts up at Wilson Rd.).  Opening Ceremony begins at 5:30 p.m. Kids games/rides; armbands $5 (Includes go fish and duck.  Without armbands, these are a quarter each) and cake walks will be held from 5:30-8:30 p.m.; DJ, 5:30 p.m. -7:00 p.m.;  Ocean Blvd, 7:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m.;  Fireworks, 10:00 p.m. Food, hamburgers, hot dogs, BBQ, pizza and vendors with all the extras. Door prizes to be given away. Plenty of food and fun for everyone. There will be a special appearance by Ed Dement, original member of the Occasions, who will be performing several songs during the event, including the song “Girl Watch”. Lattimore July 4th Parade
    The Town of Lattimore invites everyone to be a part of the annual Fourth of July parade and celebration on Wednesday, July 4th. Entries will line up for the parade on Oak Drive/Towery Road at 8 a.m. The parade will begin at 9 a.m. and go up Westlee, Main, and Price Streets. Parade entries will include floats, antique cars, horses, tractors, and much more! At the conclusion of the parade, a patriotic program will be presented at the recreation park of Lattimore Baptist Church. The celebration will begin around 10 a.m. and will include the recognition of veterans and entertainment. This year’s featured entertainment is the Max McKee Band. Max is known as the “King of the hard driving banjo.” In addition to being a North Caroline banjo champion, he and his wife own the Bluegrass Inn #2 in Shelby. Come early to get a prime seat and enjoy food sold along the parade route by the Lattimore Baptist Church youth group. They will be selling country ham and sausage biscuits and drinks along the parade route beginning at 8:15 a.m. Biscuits, hotdogs, drinks, and homemade desserts will be sold at the recreation park. All proceeds will go toward funding youth activities such as summer camp. South Mtn. Fire & Rescue July 4th Celebration
    Come out and celebrate the 4th of July  at the South Mountain Fire & Rescue. The fun begins with a parade starting at 10 A.M. from Mt. Gilead Baptist Church on the Wards Gap Road and travels to South Mountain Fire & Rescue for fun, games, bingo, etc. Uncle Sam may even show up. For more information call 828-437-6498.
Senior Dinner Club
  The Senior Dinner Club (ages 45 and up) will meet at the Golden Corral Banquet Room, Hwy. 74, Shelby, on Friday July 6 (first Friday of each month), 6 pm-8pm. Bring your friends or come alone.
