Neighborhood Calendar June 27th Edition
Piecemakers Quilt Guild
        Piecemakers Quilt Guild meets the first Wednesday of each month from 10:00am to 12:00pm at the Lincoln County Senior Center, Lincoln Campus of Gaston College, 511 Aspen Street, Lincolnton, NC, in room 319. We are here to teach and encourage those interested in the art of quilting. Visitors and new members are welcome. We also have a new class that meets on the second Thursday of each month from 10:00am to 3:00pm to provide one to one instruction to beginning quilters.    Contact Linda at 704-483-2778 for more information on this class.

        Kiwanis Club of Shelby meets the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month at noon at Deer Brook Restaurant, 201 Deer Brook Drive, Shelby. 704-482-4419. Membership dues are $110 per quarter which includes meals and dues.
NAMI Rutherford Cleveland
        The National Alliance on Mental Illness/Rutherford Cleveland hosts a Mental Illness Family-to-Family Support GroupAlways on the 3rd,  Tuesday of the Month, 6:30 - 8:00pm, Red Cross Building, 1333 Fallston Road, Shelby, NC. This Family Support Group is specifically geared to the parents, grandparents, spouses, siblings, teen-age and adult children of persons suffering from severe and persistent mental illnesses. The illnesses covered are: Depression, Bi-polar, Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and other neurobiological brain disorders. Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, Shelby
        DBSA support groups are open to anyone who is diagnosed with a mood disorder, has a family member or friend who is diagnosed, or who thinks they might have depression or bipolar disorder. DBSA support groups are not run by professionals, but instead offer peer-to-peer support. The support group meets every Tuesday from 6:30-8:00pm at The Episcopal Church in Shelby.     Solid Rock Community Garden in Lawndale
        If you enjoy gardening and want to help provide nutritious food for our neighbors - please join us at the garden on Monday evenings 6:30pm through the growing season.         The Library Book Club meets the second Thursday of every month in the Conference Room from 10:30am - 12:00 noon. The book for the month of June is “The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry” by Rachel Joyce. Everyone is invited.
Cleveland County Head Start
        Cleveland County Head Start, Office of School Readiness, is accepting applications for the 2013-2014 school year for the following schools: Bethware Elementary, Boiling Springs Elementary, East Elementary, Graham Elementary, James Love Elementary, Washington Elementary, Casar Elementary, Fallston Elementary, Grover Elementary, Marion Elementary, North Elementary, Township Three Elementary. Office of School Readiness: This program is for eligible children, 4 years of age or who will be by August 31, of this year. They will be given priority and 3 year old eligible children will fill any remaining openings. The program is designed for families with low to moderate income, regardless of race, color, age, sex, religion, national origin, special needs or disabling condition. Singles Dinner Group, Shelby
        Singles 50 and over meet for dinner the first Friday of the month at Golden Coral, Shelby at 6:00 p.m. and the third Thursday at Fishermans Feast at 5:30p.m. We participate in dancing and other monthly activities.  We invite new members to join us. For more info, call 704 406 9166.
Cleveland County Memorial Library
   The energized work of Charlotte artist, Robert Jenkins will be on display in the Library Gallery this summer, now through July 31.  Robert’s work includes images of super heroes and reflects his interest in pop culture through his use of loose brush strokes and explosive color.  Robert’s work has been shown in a number of galleries across North Carolina and he teaches workshops to both children and adults.  His work will also be available in June at the upcoming Heroes Con, Charlotte’s annual comic convention. A ‘Meet the Artist’ reception will be held at the library in late July.  Date and time will be announced soon. The Library Gallery will host 3 more exhibits in 2013.  Barbara Ghigo’s ‘People, Places and Things’ will be on display in August and September.  Artists from Minerva Synergy will show work related to the theme of ‘Roots’ in October and November.  December and January will feature the photography of Karen Mullen.  Proceeds from any sales of Mullen’s photography will be donated in her memory to the local chapter of ASPCA.
South Mountains State Park
  South Mountains State Park, 3001 South Mountains Park Avenue, Connelly Springs, NC will have these Upcoming Environmental Programs:
        Hey Kids! Join a Park Ranger this summer to learn all sorts of fun stuff about water critters, trees, animals, and fish just to name a few. Programs will be offered from June 11 to August 15. The same program will be offered twice a week every Tuesday at 11:00 am and Thursday at 2:00 pm. See below for program schedule and descriptions for June & July:
            June 27: “The 10 Essentials”. What items should you always carry with you when hiking? Meet a Park Ranger at the Visitor Center to learn about the “10 Essentials”.
July 2, 4: “Skulls and Skins”. Join a Park Ranger and learn about some of South Mountains animals and their adaptations.  Please meet at the Visitor Center.
        July 9, 11: “Tracks”. Join a Park Ranger to learn about common animal tracks and their makers. We’ll look for signs of animals outside, and then make our own tracks to take home. This program will include indoor and outdoor activities. Meet at the Visitor Center.
        July 16, 18: “What’s in the Water?” How many different kinds of critters live in the river? Join a Park Ranger in the stream to turn over some rocks and learn more about what you might find there. Come prepared to get wet! Meet at the Visitor Center.
        July 23, 25: “Predator/Prey Games”. A variety of outdoor recreational activities that demonstrate predator prey relationships, habitats and habitat needs. These activities are high energy and fast paced. Meet at the Visitor Center.
        July 30, August 1: “Crafts Gone Batty”. Are bats blind?  Do they fly into your hair?  Do they turn into vampires?  Join a Park Ranger at the Visitor Center to learn some Bat facts, make some batty crafts and have an opportunity to view some Bats.

        South Mountains State Park is located south of Morganton off of old Highway 18. The community is welcome to join them for their monthly educational interpretive programs. Call the park office at (828) 433-4772 for more information.
Book Signing, Author of “Legacy in Words”
  Jamarica S. Jones, author of “Legacy in Words”, a book of poetry, will hold a reception/book signing at the Shelby Housing Authority, 801 Logan St., Shelby, Saturday, June 29, 2:00pm - 4:00pm. Mrs. Jones is a retired Public Health Nurse. Her poems are inspired by her family, her personal experiences, and the experiences of others. Books will be available for purchase. Handicap access is available. Books $11.95 plus tax.
Cleveland Lincoln County Rose Society
  Cleveland Lincoln County Rose Society will have a garden tour to “The Perfect Rose” garden in Salisbury, Saturday, June 29.  This is the beautiful home and rose gardens of Robert Meyers and Jack Page located 302 East Glenview Drive, Salisbury, NC.  For members and visitors that wish to car pool to Salisbury, meet at 9:00am at the home of Nancy Rickard, 328 Caprice Circle, Lincolnton and plan to arrive in Salisbury by 11:00. Lost Playwrights, Hendersonville
         Lost Playwrights will meet Saturday, June 29, in Kapplan Auditorium of Henderson County Library, Hendersonville, NC, from 2:00-4:00pm. All people interest in any aspect of theatre or creative writing are encouraged to attend.
Upper Cleveland Bulldog Football & Cheer Signups
         Upper Cleveland Bulldog Football and Cheer Signups will be held on the following dates: 08/01/13 and from 6:00pm - 8:00pm at the Piedmont Community Center in Lawndale. Additionally sign up date will be held on 08/03/2013 from 9:00am - 11:00am at the Piedmont Community Center in Lawndale. Registration fee $75 for football, please bring a copy of your childs birth certificate. Registration fee is $35 for cheerleading. Free Summer Lunch For Kids & Teens
   A Free Summer Lunch for Kids & Teen will be offered at Friendship United Methodist Church. A nutritionally balanced lunch will be provided free of charge to ALL children 18 years old or younger. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Lunch served every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 11:00am until 12:00pm beginning through August 9, 2013. Friendship United Methodist Church is located at 111 Friendship Dr., Fallton (behind the Fallston Post Office). 2013 Lattimore 4th Of July Celebration
   The Town of Lattimore invites everyone to be a part of the annual Fourth of July parade and celebration on Thursday, July 4th. Entries will line up for the parade on Oak Drive/Towery Road at 8 a.m. The parade will begin at 9 a.m. and go up Westlee, Main, and Price Streets. Parade entries will include law enforcement vehicles, antique cars, horses, tractors, and much more! At the conclusion of the parade, a patriotic program will be presented at the recreation park of Lattimore Baptist Church. The celebration will begin around 10 a.m. and will include the recognition of veterans and entertainment. Come early to get a prime seat and enjoy food sold along the parade route by the Lattimore Baptist Church youth group. They will be selling country ham and sausage biscuits and drinks along the parade route beginning at 8:15 a.m. Biscuits, hotdogs, drinks, and homemade desserts will be sold at the recreation park. All proceeds will go toward funding youth activities such as summer camp. Shelby City Park
        Shelby City Park is offering gymnastics classes this summer. Classes will meet Monday through Thursday with four weeks available:  July 8-11, July 22-25 and August 3-8. Singles of Faith
        “Christian singles of all ages are invited to attend the monthly Singles of Faith Bible Study, with discussion, at the Ruby Hunt YMCA Library, in Boiling Springs, NC, on the second Thursday of every month, beginning July 12, at 7:00pm. Calling All Golfers!
   Calling all Golfers!!!! Please join us for a tournament to benefit the Upper Cleveland Bulldog Booster Club. All funds raised will go directly towards the football/cheerleading program led by the Booster Club. The tournament will be held at Pine Mountain Resort, 8355 Brookfield Rd. Connelly Springs, NC located in the beautiful South Mountains on Saturday July 20. The tournament will tee off at 9:30am. It is captains choice. Cost is $240.00 per team. Hole sponsors are $100.00. Cleveland County Arts Council Summer Art Camp
   Hey kids!  It’s not too late to register for summer art camp at the Cleveland County Arts Council. There are seven weeks of fun with 17 different classes to choose from for preschoolers through middle school students. Most of the classes will be held at the Arts Center at 111 S. Washington St. in Shelby with a week of all day classes held at Washington Elementary and one week at Bethlehem Temple Church in Grover.
