Neighborhood Calendar June 30th edition
  Habitat for Humanity
       Habitat is now accepting applications for a Habitat Home.  Applicants must currently live in sub-standard housing, have sufficient income to pay for an interest-free mortgage but not enough income to qualify for a conventional mortgage, live in Cleveland County for the past 12 months, and contribute sweat equity.  Call Shelby Gettys at 704-482-6200 to request an application or pick one up at the Habitat ReStore, 323 W. Piecemakers Quilt Guild
      “Piecemakers Quilt Guild meets the first Wed. of each month from 10AM - 12PM at the Lincoln Co. Senior Center, Lincoln Campus of Gaston College, 511 Aspen St., Lincolnton.  We are here to teach and encourage those interested in the art of quilting; visitors and new members are welcome.  Meetings include a business meeting, show-and-tell, and a program related to quilting.  On July 6th the Guild holds the annual ‘4th of July’ picnic; join us in the cafeteria on the first floor. Cleveland County Memorial Library
  Readers of all ages will travel the globe this summer as the Cleveland Memorial Library presents “One World, Many Stories,” during the summer reading program.  Children will explore places from Africa, China , England , Italy , and Japan to Mexico through stories, crafts, music, games, dance, and other activities.  The Summer Reading Program is open to young people, pre-school through 6th grade, with programs, story-hours, reading for prizes and more.  The Summer Reading Program will last six weeks now to July 28th.  There will be no programs during the week of July 4th to 8th.  No pre-registration is required and all programs are free to the public.  Locations and times are as follows:
   Spangler Branch Library - Lawndale , NC   Mondays July 11th, and July 18th.
  Cleveland County Memorial Library – Shelby, NC Thursday July 14th, and July 21st.
  The Cleveland County Memorial Library will offer a program at Township 3 Elementary School in Earl , NC on Fridays, July 15th, and 22nd.
   The times for the programs are 10:00 am – 11:00 am.  Prizes will be awarded for the number of books read in the school age program.
        The Grand Finale for pre-school will be on July 26th in the Cleveland County Memorial Library’s Children Area from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm.  The Costume Party and The Taste of The World for 1st – 6th grade will be held on July 28th from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm in the Large Meeting Room at the Cleveland County Memorial Library.  For more information, please contact Barbara Wakefield at 704-487-9069 – ext 233 or Michelle Guerrero at 704-487-9069 – ext 234.
Shelby Parks & Recreation Baseball
        The purpose of this league is to teach fundamentals of baseball for players that are moving up to the next league and will also help refine the skills of those players that are still playing at their league level.  This league will meet 2 to 3 times per week, and will run through August 11th.  Try-out information will be available when you sign-up. Sign-ups for Second Season Baseball (league ages 8-14 years) will be held through Friday, July 1st.  Sign-up hours are 8:30AM – 5:30 PM. Sign-ups include Pee-Wee Baseball (8-10 years), Little Tar Heel Baseball (11 & 12 years) and Junior Tar Heel Baseball (13 & 14 years).  Note:  Junior League is contingent on having enough players to participate. League ages are as of May 1st, 2011. When signing up a player must have a parent or guardian present and a copy of their birth certificate, if they have not participated in the park league before.  A $22.00 registration fee if player lives inside the city limits of Shelby, or a $37.00 registration fee for all others. PLAYERS THAT ARE CURRENTLY PLAYING IN OUR SUMMER LEAGUE WILL HAVE TO PAY A REGISTRATION FEE OF $5.00, AND MUST REGISTER TO PLAY.        Summer Schedule for City Park Carrousel and Rotary Train (through August).  Tuesday - Friday 10 AM - 1 PM and 5-8 PM. Saturday 1-6 PM and Sunday 1:30-6 PM. All rides are 50¢.    Shelby City Park is offering gymnastics clinics this summer.  Classes run Monday through Thursday and include instruction on tumbling, balance beam, bars, rings and tumbl-trak.  Instruction is available for children ages 3 and up.  The weeks are: June 20-23, July 11-14, July 18-21 and August 8-11.  Registration forms are available online at www.cityofshelby.com and at the park. Independence Day Celebration & Fireworks
   The City of Shelby and Cleveland Mall will host the annual Independence Day celebration and fireworks display Saturday, July 2 from 4:30 – 10 PM. The celebration kicks off with amusement rides and inflatables by Miracle Amusements. Buy an arm band and ride all evening or purchase tickets to enjoy your favorite, from the ferris wheel to the slides. The festivities continue with a party in the plaza at 6 PM featuring Captain Ron’s Beach and Boogie playing music from the Fifties to today’s hits. A military tribute ceremony at 9 PM featuring the Foothills Detachment of the Marine Corp League will lead to the main event, fireworks! Be sure to chow down on great festival food from fried funnel cakes to candy apples and cotton candy. Come early to take advantage of the savings inside the mall during the Independence Day mall-wide sidewalk sale and see photos of local military men and women displayed inside Cleveland Mall.

Fourth of July Parade
     The Town of Lattimore is looking for entries for the annual Fourth of July parade. Past entries have included antique cars, horses, ATV’s, tractors, and much more. July 4th Pageant Planned in Cherryville
       The Miss Gastonia Scholarship Association will sponsor the Miss Fourth of July Pageant on Friday, July 1 at 4:30 p.m. at the mini-park gazebo in downtown Cherryville.  The pageant is the official kickoff event for Cherryville’s Fourth of July celebration. Girls newborn to age 19 are eligible to compete in one of 10 age categories.  Contestants model a casual outfit or sundress with a patriotic theme.  All contestants receive a tiara and qualify to enter this year’s Little Miss Gastonia-Gaston County Pageant. Lattimore Fourth Of July Celebration
       Are you looking for an inexpensive way to celebrate the Fourth of July with the family? Look no further! The town of Lattimore would like to invite you to attend the annual Fourth of July Parade and Celebration on Monday, July 4th. The parade lineup will begin at 8:00 a.m. and the parade march will begin on Towery Road/Oak Drive at 9:00 a.m. Parade entries will include floats, antique cars, horses, tractors, and much more! At the conclusion of the parade, a patriotic program will be presented at the recreation park of Lattimore Baptist Church. The celebration will begin around 10 a.m. and will include the recognition of veterans and entertainment. This year’s featured entertainment is the band After Dark. The Lattimore Baptist Church youth group will be selling biscuits and drinks along the parade route beginning at 8:15 a.m. Biscuits, hotdogs, drinks, and homemade desserts will be sold at the recreation park. All proceeds will go toward funding youth activities such as summer camp. Relay For Life
        Relay for Life will have 1 more Bank night, July 26, 5 pm - 7 pm. Please have your cash and change converted into checks at First National Bank. It will speed up the processing time. They will be on 1st floor in the T. R. Harris Building of the Hospital.
GSCT Presents Baseball Play
       GSCT presents hilarious Baseball Play! Just in time for the American Legion World Series, Greater Shelby Community Theatre is producing the laugh-out-loud baseball comedy, “Rounding Third”! Sometimes emotional, sometimes funny, the PG 13 play (directed by Linda Bogan) tells the story of 2 Little League baseball coaches with very different coaching philosophies. Performances will be at the Keeter Auditorium, CCC. Performance dates/times are July 15,16,22,and 23 at 7:30pm and July 17 and July 24 at 2:30pm. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students. Youth Rally At The Holly Oak Park Gym
       Higher Focus and Push Back Ministries, along with local area ministries, in conjunction with Shelby City Parks & Recreation will hold a Youth Rally at the Holly Oak Park (gym) on Saturday, July 23, from 4 p.m.-8 p.m. They will be giving out clothes and food. There will be  Help Booths for pregnancy resources, college guidance and health department issues, etc. Bands, singing, preaching, prize drawings and ministry dancing will all be a part of the activities.
