Cleveland County Memorial Library
        The Shakespeare community read brings 2 Saturday matinee’s to the Cleveland County Library. The classic film, Kiss Me Kate will be shown on Saturday, March 15, 11:00am. This take-off on Shakespeare’s the Taming of the Shrew stars Kathryn Grayson, Howard Keel and Ann Miller and features music and lyrics by Cole Porter. The 1967 version of The Taming of the Shrew, starring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor will be shown on Saturday March 29, also at 11:00 am. Admission to both feature films is free to the public and popcorn and soft drinks will be available.
        Georgiana Wright will present her stories or songs on March 20. On April 17 she’ll bring her jazzy renditions of some favorite musical numbers.
        On May 1, a library staff member, Joy Cushing will accompany vocalists who will perform a selection of Broadway tunes. Other programs are TBA.
        Through the Garden Gate happens every first and third Thursday from 12:15-12:45 in the Library Meeting Room. Iced tea and water are served and your bag lunch is welcome. Take a friend and enjoy something a little special on your lunch hour.
Lost Playwrights of Western North Carolina
        Lost Playwrights of Western North Carolina will meet Saturday, March 15, 2:00pm to 4:00pm in the Kapplan Auditorium of Henderson County Library, 301 North Washington Street, Hendersonville, NC. All persons  interested in any aspect of theatre or professional writing are encouraged  to attend. There are no dues or admission charges.
Cleveland Lincoln County Rose Society
        Cleveland/Lincoln County Rose Society will have a ‘Rose Pruning Party’ Saturday, March 15, 10:00am, in Lincolnton, NC. For our March meeting, members of the rose society will be pruning the rose garden at the Charles R. Jonas Library in Lincolnton. We will prune the roses, clean the rose beds, put out lime, fertilize and spray the roses. This is the Tracy Jenkins Memorial Rose Garden at the Library, located at 306 West Main Street in Lincolnton. In case of rain, we will postpone this event until Saturday, March 22, 10:00am. Consulting rosarians will be available to answer your questions about pruning and growing roses.  Visitors are always welcome at the events and meetings of the Rose Society. Broad River Greenway Special Events
        “Trees”, Sunday, March 16, 2:00pm. An easy walk along the beautiful banks of the Broad River. Trees look different without their distinctive leaves, learn how to identify trees from their bark and limbs before they get dressed for Spring.

Cleveland County Post-Polio Support Group
        The Cleveland County Post-Polio Support Group will hold the March meeting at the conference room of the Life Enrichment Center of Shelby on Monday, March 17, 6:00pm. The conference room is located at the back of the building. The center is located off Hwy 18 North on Life Enrichment Blvd, just north of Cornerstone Dentistry. Each person attending should bring his/her own meal. Drinks: coffee and water - will be provided. The program will be presented by Lyn Byers, Chaplin at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. His program topic will be: “End of Life Planning to include long-term care, stay at home care, power of attorney, and living will.” The program is sponsored by “Journey,” which is a group of people intent on informing the public of options for care as they age. Hospice Cleveland County Events
        Hospice Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC will be having the following events:
        “Reflections” Support Group. This grief sharing group meets for six weeks. No cost and open to anyone who has lost a loved one. If you plan to attend one of our groups, please make every effect to attend all six sessions. Please call ext. 163 to register. Registration forms are available at HCC Administration Offices. Tuesdays: March 18, 25 and April 1, 8, 15, 5:30pm - 7:00pm., at Hospice Cleveland County Administration Building.   
        “Hospice training Class” is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about hospice care and the services provided to the community. This 12-hour course is free and there is no obligation to volunteer.  To get credit for the entire course, you will need to attend all days at one of the times offered. Rhema Outreach Ministry, Kings Mountain
        Rhema Outreach Ministry, 624 E. King Street, Kings Mountain, NC, will have a “Giveaway” Tuesday, March 18, 5:00-7:00. Items include clothes, home decor, some furniture and some food items based upon family size and income. Donations welcomed especially food and furniture.

Community Empowerment Awarness Event
        A Community Empowerment Awareness Event will be held on Saturday, March 22,  11:00 am-2pm. at Edward C. Steward Park, 500 Highland Ave., Spartanburg, SC. The entire event is free. Event guest sare: City and County Elected Officials, Spiritual Leaders, Law Enforcement, Small Smiles, Youth Mentors, Health Wellness, Safe Homes & Anointed Vision Domestic Violence Advocates, Substance Abuse Counselors, Kickboxing & much more. Event activities include: Music, dance, songs, bouncy house, face painting & more. FREE FOOD and 300 FREE BOXES of household products/paper towels, toilet tissue, personal hygiene, etc. These boxes will be given out on a first come first serve basis. We will also give out FREE baby diapers for all sizes. This event is for all cultures so join us for a day of empowerment, awareness and fun for the entire family! American Heart Association
        Three local residents who have suffered heart disease, will be featured at this year’s Cleveland County Heart Ball on March 22, 2014 at the LeGrand Center in Shelby. The Cleveland County Heart Ball is a long-standing tradition in the area. For 16 years, the American Heart Association has featured local survivors to help tell the story of heart disease and emphasize the importance of ongoing research and technology. The American Heart Association stresses the importance of knowing your family history, managing your cholesterol and blood sugar levels, maintaining a healthy diet and exercise regimen. Don and Emily Yelton and Jamey and Lou Anne Davis are the co-chairs for the16th Annual Cleveland County Heart Ball. The event will include dinner, dancing, silent and live auctions and the Open Your Heart survivor program and mission moment. Lane Alexander Memorial Golf Tournament
        The “Lane Alexander Memorial Golf Tournament”, 18th Annual  Communities In Schools Celebration  TEAM UP “FORE” KIDS will be held at Deer Brook Golf Club, Shelby on Friday, April 4. Texas Scramble, 1:30 p.m. shotgun start. Prizes for net and gross divisions. All proceeds support Communities In Schools to keep Cleveland County kids in school and graduating. Special Olympics Cleveland County
        Special Olympics Cleveland County will hold its annual Spring Track and Field Day Saturday, April 12, 2014 on the campus of Shelby High School. Anyone interested in volunteering needs to call Kevin Roberts at 704-487-9941 by February 13. All volunteers must be 16 years old.
Mental Health Association of Cleveland County
        Survivors of Suicide Support Group meets twice a month, with a daytime and evening meeting. The Evening Group meets the 2nd Monday of every month from 6:30pm - 8:00pm at The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer (502 W. Sumter Street, Shelby, NC).  The Daytime Group meets the last Tuesday of every month from 11:30am - 1:30pm at the Cleveland Memorial Library (104 Howie Drive, Shelby, NC). Sponsored by the Mental Health Association in Cleveland County, this group provides a safe and confidential place for those who have experienced the unique loss of suicide to find help, healing and hope. Our group is open to those who have lost a family member, friend or co-worker to suicide. Parents Without Partners, Shelby
       PWP meets every Monday night at 7:00 pm. at the Shelby Presbyterian Church for educational programs and at other times as scheduled for monthly social activities including: dances, plays, and concerts.         Kiwanis Club of Shelby is a group of professionals who are involved in the community and looking to change Cleveland County, one child at a time. This fundraising and project oriented club meets the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month at noon at Deer Brook Restaurant, 201 Deer Brook Drive, Shelby, NC; or the 2nd Thursday evening of every month at 5:30pm at Mi Pueblito Mexican Restaurant, 213 West Warren Street, Shelby, NC. Cleveland County Department of Social Services
   The Cleveland County Department of Social Services announces the availability of funds for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP). This program provides a one-time vendor payment to eligible households to assist with the rising costs of heating. The funding is limited but at this time there is still funding available. The household must meeting income guidelines, be responsible for heating bill, include a U.S. citizen or an eligible alien, and have resources less then $2,200. The program will run through March 31, 2014 or until funding is exhausted, whichever comes first. The agency is open Monday-Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm. We are taking applications on a first come first serve basis. Please be prepared for a possibly lengthy wait.
