Piecemakers Quilt Guild
Piecemakers Quilt Guild meets the first Wednesday of each month from 10:00am to 12:00pm at the Lincoln County Senior Center, Lincoln Campus of Gaston College, 511 Aspen Street, Lincolnton, NC, in room 319. We are here to teach and encourage those interested in the art of quilting. Visitors and new members are welcome.
We also have a new class that meets on the second Thursday of each month from 10:00am to 3:00pm to provide one to one instruction to beginning quilters. Contact Linda at 704-483-2778 for more information on this class.
Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, Shelby
DBSA support groups are open to anyone who is diagnosed with a mood disorder, has a family member or friend who is diagnosed, or who thinks they might have depression or bipolar disorder. DBSA support groups are not run by professionals, but instead offer peer-to-peer support. The support group meets every Tuesday from 6:30-8:00pm at The Episcopal Church in Shelby. NAMI Rutherford Cleveland
The National Alliance on Mental Illness/Rutherford Cleveland hosts a Mental Illness Family Support Group, always on the 3rd Tuesday of the month, March 19, 6:30-8:00pm., Cleveland County Red Cross Building, 1333 Fallston Road, Shelby, NC. This Family Support Group is specifically geared to the parents, grandparents, spouses, siblings, adult children and close relatives of persons suffering from severe and persistent mental illnesses. The illnesses covered are: Depression (unipolar), Manic Depression (bipolar), Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and other neurobiological brain disorders. These meetings are confidential and a safe place to talk with other families members going through the same experiences. We Are Families Helping Families! THROUGH THE GARDEN GATE…Spend your lunch hour at the library and feed your mind! The Main Library in Shelby is continuing the series of programs for our community that will give folks a chance to spend their lunch hour being entertained. The idea is to bring your bag lunch and the library will provide water, tea and a great program. The programs will be held in the Plaster Meeting Room and you can “come through the garden gate” entrance. The programs will be on the first and third Thursdays of every month from 12:15 to 12:45 and will feature stories, music and educational topics. The month of March’s programs are: March 21: Suspense and Thriller Stories with storyteller, Georgiana Wright.

The Council on Aging/Neal Senior Center will once again provide free, tax preparation service at the Council on Aging/Senior Center 100 T.R. We are an Informal gathering of people interested in University of South Carolina Athletics. We meet several times a year to discuss Gamecocks athletics, get latest recruiting reports, and occasionally have speakers from the USC Athletic Department. Habitat for Humanity, Cleveland County
Habitat is accepting applications for a Habitat home. These are modest, 3 bedroom, 2 bath homes of approximately 1,100 sq. ft. The first step in applying is to fill out an Initial Application. These applications can be obtained at our Habitat ReStore on Grover St. or by calling the Habitat office at 704-482-6200. Completed applications must be turned in by April 1st. Requirements to qualify are: a need for affordable, standard housing; a steady (though modest) source of income; a Cleveland County resident for a minimum of 1 year; willingness to partner with Habitat (sweat equity).
Fundraiser At Brackett Cedar Park
A fundraiser will be held for Rita Canipe on March 16th at Brackett Cedar Park. Doors open at 6 p.m. Crimson Rose Band will perform from 8 p.m.-midnight. No cover charge. Donations only. Food available. Proceeds will go to help with Rita’s medical bills.
2013 Baseball Sign-ups, Shelby City Park
Sign-ups for baseball (league ages 8-17 years) will be held from Monday, February 18th - Monday, April 1. The Park Office will be closed on Friday March 29th in observance of Easter. Sign-up hours are 8:30am - 5:30pm Mondays - Fridays. Special sign-up day will be Saturday, March 23rd from 9am - 1pm. Sign-ups include Pee Wee Baseball (8-10 yrs.), Little Tar Heel Baseball (11 & 12 yrs.), Junior Tar Heel Baseball (13 & 14 yrs.) and Senior Tar Heel Baseball (15-17 yrs.). League ages are as of May 1st, 2013. When signing up a player must have a parent of guardian present and a copy of their birth certificate, if they did not play in the league last year. A $22 registration fee if player lives inside the city limits of Shelby or a $37 registration fee for all others is also required at sign-up. Both new and returning players must sign-up in order to be eligible to participate! Players involved with AAU or USSSA are welcome to register and play with City Park Leagues. T-Ball/Coach Pitch sign-ups (ages 5,6, & 7 years) will be held Monday, February 18th through Friday, May 3rd. League ages and registration requirements are the same as those above. Shelby High School Annual Spring Musical
Shelby High School is doing their annual spring musical on March 15, 16 and 17, in the Malcolm Brown Auditorium on the Shelby High School Campus. This year’s musical is called “Crazy For You” by George and Ira Gershwin including a popular song called “I Got Rhythm.” The times for the performance are 8:00pm, Friday the 15th, 8:00pm, Saturday the 16th, and 3:00pm, Sunday the 17th. Tickets can be bought at the door at the performances or at the main office of Shelby High School during regular school hours. Tickets cost $8 for adults and $7 for students and seniors. Life is hard in the 1930’s; the Great Depression is taking its toll on a little town called Deadrock, Nevada. A banker named Bobby Child (senior Reed Horsley) from New York heads to Deadrock to foreclose the Gaiety Theatre owned by Everett Baker (senior Garrett Thomas) and his daughter Polly Baker (senior Melissa Blackwell). This year’s musical features a large number of seniors, but it also introduces three very talented freshman. Newcomer Drew Green is in charge of the sound. Rachel Carpenter is the assistant stage manager, and Taylor Newton is on stage crew. Olivia Gebel-Cook, a junior who has won three awards for stage-managing with the North Carolina Theatre Conference, is the stage manager for this production. “Hearts For Hospice Fundraiser” - For a $1 donation (or more), you can purchase a heart to display in your home, office, church, anywhere you wish. “Memory Bear Workshop” - Participants will have the opportunity to make a teddy bear out of a loved one’s shirt or other article of clothing. Children are welcome if accompanied by an adult. “Hospice Training Class” - Hospice training is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about hospice care and the services provided to the community. Cleveland Rutherfurd Kidney Association
Cleveland Rutherford Kidney Association is having a Hotdog & Bake Sale, a fundraising event for Tanner Denton, March 16, at Casar Volunteer Fire Department, Casar, NC, 10:00am until we have sold all 1,000 hotdogs, individual desserts and bake goods. All proceeds will go to Tanner Denton, who is a 8-year boy and is in need of a kidney transplant. His family must raise $12,000 in advance, before Tanner can qualify for the transplant list. Therefore, our goal is to sell 1,000 hotdogs, individual desserts and an assortment of bake items. We would like to raise $2,000 for Tanner and his family. The Cleveland County Post-Polio Support Group will holdl the March meeting at the Mayflower Restaurant on Monday, March 18, 6:00pm. The restaurant is located on Hwy 75 East in Shelby. Kings Mountain High School Baseball Program
The Baseball Program at Kings Mountain High School is looking for alumni to play in the 2013 Alumni Baseball Game. On Saturday April 6, the Kings Mountain High School Baseball will hold its 2nd annual Baseball Alumni Game at the Lancaster Field, Kings Mountain High School. Lawndale Scouts Annual Fish Fry

The 7th annual, Sgt. Raymond Horton JROTC Invitational Drill championships will be held on Saturday April 20, at the Cleveland Mall, Shelby NC. This years event has been renamed in honor of Sgt.
