    Piecemakers Quilt Guild
 “Piecemakers Quilt Guild meets the first Wednesday of each month from 10AM - 12PM at the Lincoln County Senior Center, Lincoln Campus of Gaston College, 511 Aspen Street, Lincolnton, in room 319. We are here to teach and encourage those interested in the art of quilting. Visitors and new members are welcome. Meetings include a business meeting, show and tell, and a program related to quilting.       Saturday, March 3 - “Bark, Buds & Twigs” - Winter tree and plant identification hike.  Learn about the plants around you and how they survive the winter. Meet at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 11:00 am
   Saturday, March 3 - “Let’s Talk Turkey” - Yelps, purrs, cuts and cackles.  Join a Park Ranger and learn about Wild Turkeys in the South Mountains.  Participants will learn about characteristics, habitat, populations, life history and vocalizations.  Program starts at 2:00 pm at the Visitor Center.
   Sunday, March 4 - “Skulls & Skins” - Drop by between 2-3:00 pm and hear about some of the animals that call South Mountains State Park home.

PACE Community Network Fundraiser
   PACE Community Network Fundraiser The PACE Community Network is having a Fish & Chicken Plate Sale on Saturday, March 3, beginning at 12 noon until all plates have been picked up. The proceeds from this fundraiser will be used to support our upcoming Summer Day Camp and to fund outreach activities for youth in the Ross Grove Road Community. Plates are $8.00 each. Advance ticket sales only, tickets will be sold now through February 26, 2012. No tickets will be sold the day of delivery. The menu consists of your choice of a fried chicken leg quarter or fish and pinto beans, slaw, roll, dessert & tea. Plate delivery will be available, for orders of 5 or more plates, provided the delivery will be to one central location. Cleveland Early College High School
   Cleveland Early College High School will conduct meetings in the coming weeks for eighth-graders interested in attending next year and their parents. Student recruitment sessions are scheduled at area middle schools on these dates: March 5th at Shelby Middle; March 6th at Crest Middle; March 7th at Burns Middle; March 9th  at Kings Mountain Middle
  Current CECHS students will be at those meetings to answer questions along with Dr. Anita Ware, CECHS principal. Eighth-graders who reside in Cleveland County who are home-schooled or privately educated may contact the school to sign up for one of the recruitment sessions. Mandatory Information Sessions for parents of prospective ninth-graders will be held at Cleveland Community College on March 8th and March 20th beginning at 6 p.m. Both meetings will be held in the auditorium. Attendance at one of these meetings is required to complete the application process. The application deadline is April 5th. Student applicants will be interviewed April 16-19. Located on the campus of Cleveland Community College, CECHS ultimately will enroll 250 students. Students will graduate with a high school diploma as well as an associate’s degree within five years. KMLT Presents School House Rock, Live, Jr.

  The Emmy® Award-winning Saturday morning educational cartoon series is now the basis for one of the most fun, energetic, and entertaining musicals ever to hit the KMLT stage!  Come and join the fun and sing along as the cast of 24 talented young actors brings to life the series that taught history, grammar, math, science, and politics through clever, tuneful songs. Kings Mountain Little Theatre will present “School House Rock Live! Jr.” on Fridays and Saturdays, March 9, 10, 16, and 17 at 7:30 PM, with matinees on Sundays, March 11 and 18 at 3:00 PM at the Joy Performance Center.  Tickets are a family-friendly $5 each. Reservations may be placed at 704-730-9408, but must be entered by the day before the performance you wish to attend. Reserved tickets must be picked up by 15 minutes before show-time, or they will be released back for general admission sale. While “Schoolhouse Rock” feeds the minds and imagination of children, some of our local children need more - so non-perishable food items will be collected at each performance for donation to the Kings Mountain Crisis Ministry. Kings Mountain Little Theatre is a 501(c)3 non-profit, volunteer-based community theater.  KMLT is funded in part by a Grassroots Grant from the North Carolina Arts Council and is a funded affiliate of the Cleveland County Arts Council. Wendy Walega, is the Director and Teresa Hopper is the Music Director.
Shelby City Park Lifeguard Training Course

   The Shelby City Park will hold a Lifeguard Training Course at the Shelby High School Pool. Fri., March 9- 3:30-5:30pm or other assigned time: Sat. March 10- 9am- 4pm/ Sun. March 11- 2pm-5pm; Tues. March 13 - 5:30-8:30pm; Thurs. March 15 - 5:30-8:30pm; Sat. March 17- 9am-2pm/ Sun. March 18- 2pm-5pm. Everyone needs to be at every class. Must be 15 years of age.  Cost:  $125.00/ Due after the pre-swim on Fri. March 9. Includes Red Cross Lifeguard Book and Rescue Mask. If renewing certification and have Rescue Mask cost $80.00. (Please note new lifeguard material as of Jan. 2012) If you want to purchase a book total cost:  $110.00. Lifeguard certification and CPR-PR are both good for  two years. Lady Bandits Fastpitch Softball Golf Tournament
    The 1st Annual Lady Bandits 12U/14U Fastpitch Softball Travel Team Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday, March 10, 8:00 a.m.-Shotgun Start at Woodbridge Golf Course, Kings Mtn. $50.00 per person; $200.00 team. Prizes! Lunch included! All proceeds will help pay for equipment and tournament fees. Gold & Silver level sponsors welcome. Shelby Lions Club Food Distribution
    The Shelby Lions Club will be distributing food on Wednesday, March 14 at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds. There will be fifteen items for distribution. Those who wish to participate must fill out an application and must live in Cleveland County. Because of the size of this distribution, you must bring a box or large bag that will hold the food. If you are unable to come in person, you may send a note with the number in your family, your address and entire family income along with your signature. This distribution is based on the number in the family and income. 
Cleveland County Schools Preschool Screening
   Cleveland County Schools will hold a Preschool Screening for the 2012-2013 preschool classes on March 19-23, 2012. (No make-up screening will be offered). Location: Office of School Readiness, 124 S. Post Rd., Shelby, NC 28152 (Beside the Food Lion, across from CCC). The screening is for children who live in Cleveland County and will be 4 years old by August 31, 2012.  For more information or to schedule a screening appointment, please call 704-476-8064 between the hours of 8:30 am-3:00 pm.
No appointments will be made after March 9, 2012. Screening is by appointment only.
Hospice Training Class
 Hospice Cleveland County will offer training classes during the month of March. Hospice training is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about Hospice care and the services provided to the community. This 12 hour course is free and there is no obligation to volunteer. The classes will be held at Hospice Cleveland County Administrative Building. 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC. Mon., March 19, Tues., March 20th and Thurs., March 22, 2012 from 5:30 until 9:30pm. To get credit for the course, you will need to attend all three days. Cleveland County Elementary Honors Chorus
   Cleveland County Schools will present the Cleveland County Elementary Honors Chorus, featuring 125 select students from the following Schools: Bethware, Boiling Springs, Casar, East, Elizabeth, Fallston, Grover, Kings Mountain Intermediate, North, Marion Intermediate, Springmore, Township Three, Union, Washington, and West. Performance Date is Saturday, March 31 at Barnes Auditorium at Kings Mountain High School, at 6:30 pm. The event is directed by select music teachers of Cleveland County Schools. Come and enjoy this awesome musical experience.
Shelby City Park 2012 Baseball Sign-Ups
  Sign-ups for baseball (league ages 8-17 years) will be held now through Friday March 30th.  Sign-up hours are 8:30 am - 5:30 p.m. Mondays-Fridays. Special sign-up day will be Saturday March 24th from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Sign-ups include Pee Wee Baseball (8-10 yrs.), Little Tar Heel Baseball (11 & 12 yrs.), Junior Tar Heel Baseball (13 & 14 yrs.) and Senior Tar Heel Baseball (15 –17 yrs.).  League ages are as of May 1st, 2012.   When signing-up a player must have a parent or guardian present and a copy of their birth certificate, if they did not play in the league last year.   A  $22 registration fee if player lives inside the city limits of Shelby or a $37 registration fee for all others is also required at sign-up.   Both new and returning players must sign-up in order to be eligible to participate!  Players involved with AAU or USSSA are welcome to register and play with City Park Leagues.

Registration Open For Ms Walk
   The National Multiple Sclerosis Society has opened registration for this year’s walk in Shelby. Walk MS: Shelby is scheduled for Saturday, April 21, in Shelby City Park (850 W. Sumter Street). Walk MS, an annual fundraiser for more than 20 years, is an opportunity for the community to support the estimated 15,500 people living with multiple sclerosis in the Greater Carolinas Chapter area. Sixty percent of all the money raised will go to programs, services and advocacy for Greater Carolinas residents. The rest will support national research to find the cause and cure of MS. In addition to the 3 mile walk, the event will feature live entertainment, food vendors and kids’ activities. For more information or to register, visit WalkingForMS.org, or call 1-800-FIGHT-MS.
Shelby Lions Club To Sponsor Golf Event At Deer Brook Golf Club
   Shelby  Lions  will  host a Golf Event at Deer Brook Golf Club  Monday, May 7th.   Registration  will  be  at  9:00am; tee off at 9:30am. The  event is a  fundraiser for Cleveland County Hearing & Sight Conservation needs  (eye exams, eyeglasses, etc.) and for the Lions Shelby High School Scholarship Award. This will be a 4-person Captain’s Choice tournament with cash and other prizes to be awarded.  1st place prize will be $300 for the winning team. Teams can pick up sign-up sheets at Deer Brook Golf Club   or  First National Bank South Branch, Cost for the event is only $60 per player ($240 per team) and includes green fees / cart, lunch, sleeve of golf balls, and prizes.
