Neighborhood Calendar March 7th Edition
Piecemakers Quilt Guild
        Piecemakers Quilt Guild meets the first Wednesday of each month from 10:00am to 12:00pm at the Lincoln County Senior Center, Lincoln Campus of Gaston College, 511 Aspen Street, Lincolnton, NC, in room 319. We are here to teach and encourage those interested in the art of quilting. Visitors and new members are welcome.
        We also have a new class that meets on the second Thursday of each month from 10:00am to 3:00pm to provide one to one instruction to beginning quilters. Contact Linda at 704-483-2778 for more information on this class.
Singles Group Meeting, Shelby

Kings Mountain Historical Museum

        March 1 – March 31: Home Made: Aprons from the Area. The display will showcase antique aprons belonging to residents of the Kings Mountain area.
        Saturday, March 9, 10:00am - 4:00pm. KMHM will host a Celebration of Women’s History. The day long program will feature weaving and spinning demonstrations, as well as a book signing and program by author Shelia Ingle inside the Museum. Outside, in the Museum Commons, the 49th North Carolina Civil War Re-enactment group will be doing living history demonstrations, with cooking and other female activities. Shelia Ingle is the author of the young reader novels Courageous Kate: Daughter of the American Revolution and Fearless Martha: Daughter of the American Revolution.
        Saturday, April 13, 10:00am - 4:00pm: KMHM Spring Fling - The annual daylong event will feature living history demonstrations from the 38th North Carolina Civil War re-enactment group. Other events for the day include a performance by the Log Cabin String Band and a reading of Civil War letters by Joy W. Sparrow from the book Sparrows’ Nest of Letters, edited by Joy W. Sparrow at 10:30am.
Kiwanis Club, Shelby
        Kiwanis Club of Shelby meets the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month at noon at Deer Brook Restaurant, 201 Deer Brook Drive, Shelby. 704-482-4419. Membership dues are $110 per quarter which includes meals and dues.
NAMI Rutherford Cleveland
        The National Alliance on Mental Illness/Rutherford Cleveland hosts a Mental Illness Family Support Group, always on the 3rd Tuesday of the month, 6:30-8:00pm., Cleveland County Red Cross Building, 1333 Fallston Road, Shelby, NC. This Family Support Group is specifically geared to the parents, grandparents, spouses, siblings, adult children and close relatives of persons suffering from severe and persistent mental illnesses. The illnesses covered are: Depression (unipolar), Manic Depression (bipolar), Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and other neurobiological brain disorders. These meetings are confidential and a safe place to talk with other families members going through the same experiences. We Are Families Helping Families!         THROUGH THE GARDEN GATE…Spend your lunch hour at the library and feed your mind! The Main Library in Shelby is continuing the series of programs for our community that will give folks a chance to spend their lunch hour being entertained. The idea is to bring your bag lunch and the library will provide water, tea and a great program. The programs will be held in the Plaster Meeting Room and you can “come through the garden gate” entrance. The programs will be on the first and third Thursdays of every month from 12:15 to 12:45 and will feature stories, music and educational topics. The month of February’s programs are:

        The Council on Aging/Neal Senior Center will once again provide free, tax preparation service at the Council on Aging/Senior Center 100 T.R. Kings Mountain High School Baseball Program
        The Baseball Program at Kings Mountain High School is looking for alumni to play in the 2013 Alumni Baseball Game. On Saturday April 6, the Kings Mountain High School Baseball will hold its 2nd annual Baseball Alumni Game at the Lancaster Field, Kings Mountain High School. This year’s game will be dedicated to the memory of Coach Tony Leigh. The game will start at 6:00pm and batting practice at 4:00pm. The Home Run Derby will start at 5:15. Western Piedmont Gamecock Club
        We are an Informal gathering of people interested in University of South Carolina Athletics. We meet several times a year to discuss Gamecocks athletics, get latest recruiting reports, and occasionally have speakers from the USC Athletic Department. 2013 Baseball Sign-ups, Shelby City Park
        Sign-ups for baseball (league ages 8-17 years) will be held from Monday, February 18th - Monday, April 1. The Park Office will be closed on Friday March 29th in observance of Easter. Sign-up hours are 8:30am - 5:30pm Mondays - Fridays. Special sign-up day will be Saturday, March 23rd from 9am - 1pm. Sign-ups include Pee Wee Baseball (8-10 yrs.), Little Tar Heel Baseball (11 & 12 yrs.), Junior Tar Heel Baseball (13 & 14 yrs.) and Senior Tar Heel Baseball (15-17 yrs.). League ages are as of May 1st, 2013. When signing up a player must have a parent of guardian present and a copy of their birth certificate, if they did not play in the league last year. A $22 registration fee if player lives inside the city limits of Shelby or a $37 registration fee for all others is also required at sign-up. Both new and returning players must sign-up in order to be eligible to participate! Players involved with AAU or USSSA are welcome to register and play with City Park Leagues. T-Ball/Coach Pitch sign-ups (ages 5,6, & 7 years) will be held Monday, February 18th through Friday, May 3rd. League ages and registration requirements are the same as those above. Lifeguard Training Course, Shelby City Park
        Shelby City Park will have a Lifeguard Training Course, at Shelby High School Pool, Thursday, March 7, 3:30-5:30pm or other assigned time; Saturday, March 9, 9am-4pm; Sunday, March 10, 2:00-5:00pm; Tuesday, March 12, 5:30-8:30pm; Thursday, March 14, 5:30-8:30pm; Saturday, March 16, 9:00am-2:00pm; Sunday, March 17, 2:00-5:00pm. Everyone needs to be at every class! Must be 15 years of age. Cost: $130.00, due after the pre-swim on Thursday, March 7. Includes Red Cross Lifeguard Book and Rescue Mask. If renewing certification and have Rescue mask, cost $85.00. (Please note new lifeguard material as of January 2012) If you want to purchase a book total cost: $115. Please note: Lifeguard certification is good for 2 years and CPR-pr is good for 2 years. Deadline: Friday, February 22. To sign up call or come by the park office, 704-484-6811. The pre-swim test (www.redcross.org) will be on Thursday, March 7, starting at 3:30pm at SHS Pool or at other scheduled time when signing up for class.         CPR CLASS - Shelby City Park will have a CPR for the professional rescuer renewal class for certified Lifeguards, Saturday, March 16, 9:00am - 2:00pm, at the American Red Cross Building. Please note the change: Certification is for two years. Cost: $35/ payment needs to be made when signing up. If writing a check it needs to be made to the Shelby City Park. This does not include book, should have book since renewing. It is a requirement that all Lifeguards have their own Rescue Mask so if you do not have a rescue mask please let us know. Alexander Youth Network Open House, Shelby
        Alexander Youth Network is the leader in children’s behavioral healthcare in North Carolina. Kings Mountain Woman’s Club Community Sale
        Kings Mountain Woman’s Club, 108 East Mountain Street, Kings Mountain will be having a Community Sale, Saturday, March 9, 8:00am until noon. An open to all community sale will be held indoors rain or shine. An indoor space with a table provided will rent for $10. Outdoor space (no table) is also available for $10. We welcome individuals, family groups, church groups or dealers who are looking to take advantage of this indoor sale at a convenient location. Bake sale items and craft sales are also welcome. The building will be available for participants set up on Friday evening 7:00-9:00. Outdoor participants please plan on setting up early on Saturday morning.         Denny’s, 2025 East Dixon Boulevard, Shelby, will be having a Yard/Bake Sale, March 9, 8:00am - 3:00pm. There will be lots of food, fun, and prizes! All proceeds will be donated to MDA, Denny’s.
Commodities Distribution, Shelby
        The Shelby Lions Club will be distributing USDA Commodities on March 13, at the Cleveland County Fair Ground. Those who wish to come and fill out an application will only need some identification and must live in Cleveland County. If a person is unable to come in person they may send a note stating the number in the family, their address and their whole family income, signed by them. The distribution is based on the number in the family and the income.

        Cleveland County Schools Preschool Screening for the 2013-2014 preschool classes, for Children who live in Cleveland County and will be 4 years old by August 31, 2013, will be: March 18-22 (No make-up screening will be offered), at the Office of School Readiness, 124 South Post Road, Shelby, NC 28152 (beside the Food Lion, across from CCC).         “Hearts For Hospice Fundraiser” - For a $1 donation (or more), you can purchase a heart to display in your home, office, church, anywhere you wish. There is a place for you to put “In Honor/Memory” of a loved one and a line for “From”. Hearts can be purchased at the Hospice Administration Building or by calling 704-487-4677 ext. 163.
        “Memory Bear Workshop” - Participants will have the opportunity to make a teddy bear out of a loved one’s shirt or other article of clothing. Children are welcome if accompanied by an adult. Community Empowerment Awareness Event
        Word of Deliverance, R.O.T.W. Reaching Outside The Walls Ministries, 3324 Chesnee Hwy, Chesnee, S.C., is having a “Community Awareness Event, Saturday, March 23, 11:00am 2:00pm., at Forest City Housing Authority, 147 East Spruce St., Forest City, NC. Entire event is free! Habitat for Humanity, Cleveland County
        Habitat is accepting applications for a Habitat home. These are modest, 3 bedroom, 2 bath homes of approximately 1,100 sq. ft. The first step in applying is to fill out an Initial Application. These applications can be obtained at our Habitat ReStore on Grover St. or by calling the Habitat office at 704-482-6200. Completed applications must be turned in by April 1st. Requirements to qualify are: a need for affordable, standard housing; a steady (though modest) source of income; a Cleveland County resident for a minimum of 1 year; willingness to partner with Habitat (sweat equity).
Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, Shelby
        DBSA support groups are open to anyone who is diagnosed with a mood disorder, has a family member or friend who is diagnosed, or who thinks they might have depression or bipolar disorder. DBSA support groups are not run by professionals, but instead offer peer-to-peer support. The support group meets every Tuesday from 6:30-8:00pm at The Episcopal Church in Shelby.
