Cleveland County Memorial Library
        The Through the Garden Gate program at the Library on Thursday, May 1 features library staff member, Joy Cushman playing a medley of Broadway tunes on the piano. Join them for a musical lunch hour at 12:15-12:45 in the large meeting room of the Cleveland County Library in Shelby. Cold beverages will be served and bag lunches are welcome.

        Pet Loss Workshop - “Love You Forever”. If you have ever lost a pet, are dealing with grief, or your pet is beginning the journey to the Rainbow Bride, come join us! We’ll discuss end-of-life issues for your pet, stages of grief, how to handle questions and problems children may have, and memorializing that special buddy. Greater Shelby Community Theatre
        Greater Shelby Community Theatre will present the Shakespeare comedy “Taming of the Shrew” (Southern Fried) on May 2-4 in the Keeter Auditorium on the campus of Cleveland Community College. You’ve never seen Shakespeare like this! It’s set in the communities of Cleveland County, the characters are down-home folks, and the play is accompanied by the Rock Springs Bluegrass Band. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30pm and Sunday performances are at 2:30pm. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students/seniors. CCC students and staff are admitted free with ID. Singles Dinner Group, Shelby

The 2nd Fishing for Firemen Bass Tournament
        The 2nd  Fishing for Firemen Bass Tournament will be May 3, rain or shine, at 3 possible lakes: Hickory, Norman, Wylie *SC rules apply. Lake will be drawn at meeting held at Ellenboro Fire Dept. Do not have to be present at meeting. Concerned Bikers Association of Cleveland County Golf Tournament
        Concerned Bikers Association of Cleveland County 4-Man, Captain’s Choice Golf Tournament will be May 3, at Woodbridge Golf Course, 1007 New Camp Creek Church Rd., Kings Mountain, NC. 10:00am Shotgun Start. 18 holes with cart, and meal, $200 team. There will be several other contests taking place. Putting Contest, Closet to the Pin, Longest Drive, Straightest Drive. One lucky person could ride away on SouthSide Customs’ Chopper, The Viper. Simply make a “Hole in One” on a par 3. Hole to be announced the day of the tournament.
Fiddlers Vineyard, Cherryville
        Wine N’ Whiskers, hosted by Fiddler’s Vineyard will be held May, 3, 12:00-8:00pm. Come out for a great day and a great cause! Enjoy a day of family fun, bring your pet, your kids and a lawn chair. There will be a pet costume contest, demonstration by Canine Extreme Shepherds, Food, various vendors selling their specialties, free face painting and music provided by local Blue Grass bands. Fiddlers Vineyard is a small local vineyard who has opened their gates and offered to host this event with much of the proceeds benefiting the Humane Society of Lincoln County Low Cost Spay/Neuter Program. Fiddler’s Vineyard will have wine tasting all day. All of their great wines will be available for sale. Won’t you come out and join the fun? Admission is $5, children under 12 free. Parking is free. Living Healthy with Diabetes Workshop
        Isothermal Planning & Development Commission Area Agency on Aging, NC Cooperative Extension (NCCE), and John Knox Presbyterian Church is sponsoring a Free “Living Health with Diabetes” Workshop May 5 and 12, 5:30-8:00pm, at John Knox Presbyterian Church, 610 Charles Road, Shelby, NC. Shelby Lions Club
   Shelby Lions Club is sponsoring its third annual golf event Friday, May 9, at Deer Brook Golf Club, Shelby, NC. Registration is at 8:30am with tee off at 9:00am. This will be a 4-person Captain’s Choice, with fee of $60 per player, $240/Team. The fee includes lunch and a sleeve of golf balls. There will be individual and team prizes, including cash prizes. The proceeds will benefit the Lions scholarship program for Shelby High School and their work with the Cleveland County Blind and visually impaired.
Young Life of Cleveland County
   Young Life of Cleveland County will be having a Rummage Sale, Saturday, May 10, 8:00am - noon, at parking lot on the corner of E. Marion and S. DeKalb Streets behind Methodist Church, to help their high school friends raise money to go to Young Life camp this summer. Lots of stuff from lots of families. Some “treasures” from an estate!

Friends of the Library Annual Meeting
   The award-winning Southern writer Sharyn McCrumb will be speaking at the Friends of the Library Annual Meeting Thursday, May 15. The meeting will be held at the Earl Scruggs Center at 6:30pm. Tickets are on sale now for $20, and a current Friends of the Library membership is required for purchase. New members can also buy tickets with their paid membership. Ask at Cleveland County Memorial Library front desk. Tickets include: Dinner, catered by Dressing on the Side, as well as an optional tour of the Earl Scruggs Center prior to dinner. The tour begins at 5:00 and dinner will be served at 6:30. The last day to purchase tickets is May 8. About the Author: Sharyn McCrumb’s books have been named Notable Books of the Year by The New York Times and the Los Angles Times. She was named a “Virginia Woman of History” for Achievement in Literature and won the Appalachian Writer of the Year Award.
Cherryville Little Theatre
        Cherryville Little Theatre is excited to be auditioning for a summer production of Aladdin, Jr. Sunday and Monday, May 18-19 by appointment. Call back dates are Tuesday, May 20. We are in need of singers, dancers, and gymnasts ages 12-18 years. Rehearsal dates are July 7-July 25 from 9:00am - 3:00pm. There are four performances over the weekend of July 25-27.         Kiwanis Club of Shelby is a group of professionals who are involved in the community and looking to change Cleveland County, one child at a time. This fundraising and project oriented club meets the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month at noon at Deer Brook Restaurant, 201 Deer Brook Drive, Shelby, NC; or the 2nd Thursday evening of every month at 5:30pm at Dragonfly Wine Market, 101 West Warren Street, Shelby, NC. Mental Health Association of Cleveland County
        Survivors of Suicide Support Group meets twice a month, with a daytime and evening meeting. The Evening Group meets the 2nd Monday of every month from 6:30pm - 8:00pm at The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer (502 W. Sumter Street, Shelby, NC).  The Daytime Group meets the last Tuesday of every month from 11:30am - 1:30pm at the Cleveland Memorial Library (104 Howie Drive, Shelby, NC). Sponsored by the Mental Health Association in Cleveland County. Piecemakers Quilt Guild
        Piecemakers Quilt Guild meets the first Wednesday of each month from 10:00am - 12:00pm at the Lincoln Co. Senior Center, Lincoln Campus of Gaston College, 511 Aspen St., Lincolnton. We are here to teach and encourage those interested in the art of quilting, visitors and new members are always welcome.
