Relay for Life. Friday, May 19, 2017, 4:30pm - 11:30pm. There will be a Drawing Held for a Handmade Afghan on Friday, May 19, 2017, made by Lori Cain. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. All proceeds to benefit Relay for Life and The American Cancer Society! See Kathy Sloan or Lori Cain.
Shelby Amateur Radio Club
Interested in becoming a FCC licensed Ham Radio operator? The Shelby Amateur Radio Club will hold a testing session at the Cleveland County Memorial Library, Shelby, NC, Saturday, May 13, 2017 from 10:00am-12:00pm. Upcoming Environmental Programs at South Mountains State Park:
May 13, 14, 2017 - "Animals of the South Mountains". Join a Park Ranger to learn about the many animals that call South Mountains home. The program will begin at 2:00 pm in the Visitor Center auditorium.
May 13, 2017 - "The 10 Essentials". What items should you always carry with you when hiking? Meet a Park Ranger at the Visitor Center at 11:00 am to learn about the "10 Essentials".
May 13, 14, 2017 - "Animals of the South Mountains". Join a Park Ranger to learn about the many animals that call South Mountains home. The program will begin at 2:00 pm in the Visitor Center auditorium.
May 20, 27, 2017 - "Streamside Hike". Join a Park Ranger at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 11:00 am for a streamside hike along the Jacob Fork River. "
May 20, 21, 2017 - "Let's Talk Turkey". Yelps, purrs, cuts and cackles. Join a Park Ranger and learn about Wild Turkeys in the South Mountains. Participants will learn about characteristics, habitat, populations, life history and vocalizations. Program starts at 2:00 pm at the Visitor Center.
May 21, 28, 2017 - "Fly Fishing 101". Get Hooked! Join angler Jeff Newton at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm for an introductory class on fly fishing. Jeff is an instructor with Project Healing Waters and is a member of Trout Unlimited. All class materials will be provided free. North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission fishing regulations still apply.
May 27, 2017 - Wilderness Survival 101". Wilderness Survival 101 will cover basic survival information as covered in the Boy Scouts of America handbook. Topics covered will include basic first aid, shelter and others based on class interest and instructor discretion. Program will be presented by park volunteer, Jeff Newton, who also teaches Fly Fishing 101 and has a great deal of experience in the outdoors. Program is free and open to the public. Meet at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm.
May 28, 2017 - "Knot Tying 101". Knot tying is a fundamental skill for many tasks. Whether you are a beginning climber, backpacker or just want to learn a few knots. Join a Ranger at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm.

Foothills Post-Polio Support Group
The Foothills Post- Polio Support Group, will hold their meeting on Monday, May 15, 2017 at 6:00pm at the conference room of the Life Enrichment Center of Shelby. The conference room is located at the back of the building. The center is located off Hwy. 18 North on Life Enrichment Blvd, just north of Cornerstone Dentistry. The program will be Marsha Spurling sharing her life story as a Post Polio survivor. If you are a polio survivor and would like to attend, we would love to see you there! The Town of Waco
The Town of Waco will hold their monthly meeting on Monday, May 15, 2017 at 7:00pm. Everyone is invited to attend on May 15, 2017. If anyone has any suggestions to review for the upcoming Fiscal Year, please bring. The Town of Waco will hold their 2017-2018 Fiscal Budget Meeting on Saturday, May 27, 2017 at 10:00 am. This meeting is not open to the public.

"Reflections" Sharing Group - This grief sharing group meets for six weeks. No cost and open to anyone who has lost a loved one. Educational Series: "Supporting and Understanding Veterans' and Their Family". Veterans, as well as their families, friends, and loved ones face unique challenges as their lives progress. These can stem from all aspects of their lives within the armed forces umbrella. Learn about these unique challenges and ways to support from Hospice Cleveland County Chaplain, Veteran, and We Honor Veterans representative Rev. Terry Floyd. Hospice Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser at Fatz Cafe, 235 E. Dixon Blvd., Shelby, NC, Saturday, June 3, 2017, from 8am - 10am! Stop in and help support Hospice Cleveland County. Breakfast includes: pancakes, sausage links, maple syrup, butter, mixed fruit, coffee, tea or milk. Adult tickets are $8 and children 6 and under eat free (limit one "free" child per adult ticket). The Cherryville Little Theatre
The Cherryville Little Theatre is extremely pleased to announce "Junie B. Jones is NOT a Crook" on stage this spring. This is a fantastic story about Junie's adventures in losing her favorite mittens only to find a wonderful multicolored pen. This amazing cast brings these story book characters to life in just over an hour-long production. And as always, Junie teaches us an important life lesson that is great for kids, teens and especially adults. The cast is made up of seven amazing local actors. From Kings Mountain we have Sophia Kelstrom playing the exciting role of Junie B Jones, Ethan Clinard boasting the role of Handsome Warren, Sydney Bridges rocking the role of Jim and Morgan Shipton as the stressed out classroom teacher. From Shelby, we have Ely Thompson as the precious Lucille. Anna Grace Jones, from Lattimore, will be playing the part of the spirited Grace. Cherryville's very own John Randall plays a perfect five-year-old in the role of Ricardo. Page Thompson is the director gifted with the job of wrangling these characters and Connie Fox is the producer who keeps everyone sane. Join them for one of the evening performances at 7:00pm, Friday, May 19, 2017 or Saturday, May 20, 2017. There will be a matinee shows starting at 3:00pm on both Saturday, May 20 and Sunday, May 21. Tickets available at the door for General Admission. If you would prefer to purchase general admission tickets early, you are welcome to drop by the theater May 15-18 from 6:00pm - 8:00pm to purchase them in the lobby. Shelby High School Class of 1977 Reunion
The Shelby High School Class of 1977 40th Anniversary Reunion will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2017, at the Don Gibson Theatre, 318 S. Washington Street, Shelby, NC, from 7:00pm until midnight. The State Theater was renamed The Don Gibson Theatre in honor of the famous Shelby native known for his songwriting skills. There will be heavy hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar, and Mr. Dick Hamrick (their chemistry teacher!) will be the DJ. Cost is $30 per person before July 31, 2017.
