Neighborhood Calendar May 12th edition
Boys & Girls Club Summer Day Camp
        Enrollment for the 2011 Boys & Girls Club Jack Schweppe Summer Day Camp is now open. Registration is weekdays from 2 PM to 7 PM. at the Boys & Girls Club building, located at 412 West Sumter Street, directly behind Shelby Middle School in Shelby.  Parent Packets containing all materials and program information, are available during the Club’s regular After-School program hours. Registration is ongoing, space permitting, first come-first served.  Financial Assistance is available with regular Day Camp session fees based on a sliding scale according to income.  Details on fees are available through the Boys & Girls Club office. The 2011 Summer Day Camp schedule offers three sessions, each three weeks.  Session 1 is Monday, June 13 through Friday, July 1.  Session 2 is Tuesday, July 5 through Friday, July 22.  Session 3 is Monday, July 25 through Friday, August 12. Day Camp is open weekdays from 8:00 AM to 5:30 in the evening with the program schedule varying daily.  Campers participate in structured daily Club activities and are placed with children of like age. Younger camper groups are coed.  Older campers are separated by gender.  Day Camp is open to all boys and girls, rising first graders through age 14. Older campers may be registered with restrictions. Disabled American Veterans
        Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 18. Regular Meetings are held the 2nd Thursday of each month at 7:00 pm at 1138 E. Marion St., Shelby, NC. On the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month from 9:00 - 11:00 am, we will open ot assist Veterans and answer questions. Free coffee and donuts served. The DAV Transportation Network provides transportation to and from the Asheville Veterans Medical Center in Oteen, NC for all scheduled appointments; for veterans with no other form or means of transportation.    DNR, living will, healthcare power of attorney: What do they mean?
        Family caregivers of adults are invited to attend a discussion of end-of-life issues Tuesday, May 17, at the Life Enrichment Center in Shelby. Topics will include DNR, living will and healthcare power of attorney. The program is free of charge and open to the public. The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. but late comers are welcome and will end by 7. A sitter service is available for the adult who needs care, but a reservation is required by May 10 by calling 704.484.0405. No reservation is required to attend the meeting.         Auction of furnishings to benefit Life Enrichment Center
     A fundraising auction will be held Saturday, May 21, at 10 a.m. at the former Life Enrichment Center building at 103 T.R. Harris Dr. in Shelby. Thornburg Auction Co. will be selling dining tables, chairs, gliders, hardwood doors, art work, office furniture, washer and dryer, chest freezer, medical equipment, sofa tables and kitchenware.         Benefits of exercise for Parkinson’s will be meeting topic
        The benefits of exercise in dealing with Parkinson’s Disease will be the topic for the regular quarterly meeting of the Parkinson’s Support Group Tuesday, May 24, at the Life Enrichment Center in Shelby. This meeting is free of charge and open to those diagnosed with Parkinson’s and their care partners. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m., a new time for the group. Relay For Life Events
        Relay For Life Fundraiser: The Radiology Department at CRMC is holding our First Annual Cornhole Tournament. It will be held Saturday, May 14th at the Masonic Lodge in Boiling Springs. GSCT Hold Auditions – “Rounding Third”
       GSCT hold Auditions for Baseball play. Greater Shelby Community Theatre is holding AUDITIONS for “Rounding Third”, directed by Linda Pangburn Bogan. “Rounding Third” is a humorous rollercoaster journey of 2 Little League coaches through an entire season, from their first tentative meeting to the climatic championship game. This heartwarming sports comedy goes from side splitting laughter to a thought provoking critique of contemporary culture. Roles are availabe for 2 men ages 30 up. All are welcome to come and sign up for backstage, technical, and set building help. Auditions are May 20 from 7-9pm, May 21 and 22 from 2-5pm and May 23 from 7-9pm for callbacks. Performance dates ar July 15,16, 22, 23 at 7:30pm and July 17 and 24 at 2:30pm at CCC. Two special performance are planned at the Historic Rogers Theater during the weekend of the American Legion World Series Aug.13 and Aug.14 from 12-3pm
Concealed Weapon Class
        Our class will be held Saturday, May 21st from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm. The cost is $75.00. You will need to bring with you: Gun, 50 rounds of ammunition, eye and ear protection. Instructor is a member of Law Enforcement and is certified by North Carolina Department of Justice as a Firearms Safety Instructor. 4th Annual Buffalo Baptist Golf Tournament
       The youth of Buffalo Baptist is having the golf tournament to raise money for our summer mission’s trip. This event will be held Saturday, May 21st at River Bend Golf Course. The tournament will start at 2:00 pm. We will provide a free chick-fil-a meal for all participating golfers. This year God has lead us to Williamsburg Kentucky. 25 young people and 7 adults will be working for Jesus to fix houses and do back yard Bible School with children in the community. Eastern Star Fundraiser
       Eastern Star will hold a BBQ Chicken fundraiser at Fallston Masonic Lodge #356 on Saturday, May 21, 2011, serving from 11 am-6 pm. $7.00 plate. Eat-in or carry out. Walk-ins welcome. The menu will consist of 1/2 chicken, baked beans, cole slaw, roll, dessert and tea. This is to benefit Masonic charities.


“All You Can Eat” Pancake Breakfast

Gaston’s Quilters’ Guild
       The Gaston Quilters’ Guild will meet Monday, May 23rd at 6:30 p.m. Meetings are held at Woodlawn Baptist Church, 1101 N. Main St. in Lowell, NC. Our meetings are open to all quilters - beginners to experienced. Diane of QBee Quilts shop will give a lecture and trunk show. Parking Lot Flea Market
       Back by popular demand, the Neal Senior Center is offering the Parking Lot Flea Market (outdoor market) again on Friday, May 27, 8 AM-12 noon. There will be several events during the Spring and Fall of the year. The cost will continue to be $5 per parking space with a maximum of 3 spaces available per vendor.

1st Annual Carey Heavner Foundation Golf Tournament
        May 28, 2011 1st annual CAREY HEAVNER FOUNDATION golf tournament starts at 1:00 PM at Deer Brook Golf Club, Shelby NC. Type of tournament: Captains choice. Entry fee: $ 200.00 per 4 man team; Hole sponsorship: $100.00 (to advertise your company). We will be serving free hamburgers and hot dogs to all participants following the tournament. 27th Annual Dixie Rodders
       The 27th Annual Dixie Rodders Car Show was held on June 4.  Presented by Dixie Rodders. Proceeds go to charities chosen by Dixie Rodders. The event will be held around the Historic Courthouse in Uptown Shelby. Pre-registration is $20.00. 1st Annual Cruzin For Christ, Lawndale
        Come join us for our 1st Annual Cruzin for Christ to be held at Lawndale Park on June 11. The car show will start at 5:00 pm and ending at 9:00 pm. All makes and models of cars, trucks, motorcycles are welcome. There will be live music, hamburgers, hot dogs, bbq (which starts at 12:00 pm until sold out) and the Dairy Queen Ice Cream trailer!!!! There is a $10 registration fee and you can pre-register by calling 704-470-7668. All sorts of activities and vendors will be available. “God should be our steering wheel. Second Annual Masonic Charity Ride

       The Philadelphia Community Organization of Lawndale (PCOL) is in the process of planning our 13th annual Juneteenth celebration which will be held at 165 Schenck Farm Rd., Lawndale, NC on June 18.  The celebration will begin with a parade at 1 p.m. (lineup 12:30 pm) and the festivities starting at 1:30 pm-4 pm.
