                        “Fly Fishing 101” - Sunday, May 18, 25. Get Hooked! Cast your line in one of the state’s most pristine mountain trout streams at South Mountains State Park. Whether you want to learn how to tie flies, develop your casting skills, or discover the joy and challenges of fly fishing for the first time, join anglers Jeff Newton and Bob Tupper at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm for an introductory class on fly fishing. Jeff and Bob are instructors with Project Healing Waters and are members of Trout Unlimited. All class materials will be provided free, and there will be optional fishing time in the Jacob Fork afterwards.  Classes may vary based on interest and skill level of the participants. North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission fishing regulations still apply.
        South Mountains State Park is located south of Morganton off of old Highway 18.  We welcome the community to join us for our monthly educational interpretive programs.  Call the park office at (828) 433-4772 for more information.

   Please join us at our last Through the Garden Gate program of the season on Thursday, May 15 at 12:15 here at Cleveland County Library, 104 Howie Dr, Shelby, NC. Stacey Costner of Living Earth Sanctuary in Kings Mountain will be our presenter. Stacey returned to her family farm about 5 years ago to practice self-sufficiency, raising animals and food plants as well as herbs. She has since become a holistic clinical herbalist. Stacey will share her story of her homestead experience as well as information about the healing power of herbs. Come share a cup of her fresh herbal tea and hear her story.  You are in for a treat.
Friends of the Library Annual Meeting
   The award-winning Southern writer Sharyn McCrumb will be speaking at the Friends of the Library Annual Meeting Thursday, May 15. The meeting will be held at the Earl Scruggs Center at 6:30pm. Tickets are on sale now for $20, and a current Friends of the Library membership is required for purchase. New members can also buy tickets with their paid membership. Ask at Cleveland County Memorial Library front desk. Tickets include: Dinner, catered by Dressing on the Side, as well as an optional tour of the Earl Scruggs Center prior to dinner. The tour begins at 5:00 and dinner will be served at 6:30. The last day to purchase tickets is May 8. About the Author: Sharyn McCrumb’s books have been named Notable Books of the Year by The New York Times and the Los Angles Times. She was named a “Virginia Woman of History” for Achievement in Literature and won the Appalachian Writer of the Year Award.
Greater Shelby Community Theatre
        Greater Shelby Community Theatre will hold auditions for the hilarious comedy “Leading Ladies” by Ken Ludwig. Two actors, down on their luck, resolve to pass themselves off as nieces of a dying lady, just to get her cash. This play has parts for 5 men ages 18-60 and 3 women ages 18-70. Auditions will be held in the basement of the Arts Council on May 16 from 6:00-9:00pm, May 18 from 1:30-4:30pm, and May 19 from 6:00-9:00pm. You will be asked to read from the script. Broad River Genealogy Society
        The Broad River Genealogical will be having open house on May 17, 10:00am at the Achieves Building, 1145 County Home Road, Shelby, NC. Anyone interested in finding their ancestors there will be people available to help. There will be food and drinks available.
Cherryville Little Theatre
        Cherryville Little Theatre is excited to be auditioning for a summer production of Aladdin, Jr. Sunday and Monday, May 18-19 by appointment. Call back dates are Tuesday, May 20. We are in need of singers, dancers, and gymnasts ages 12-18 years. Rehearsal dates are July 7-July 25 from 9:00am - 3:00pm. There are four performances over the weekend of July 25-27. Cleveland County Post-Polio Support Group
        The Cleveland County Post-Polio Support Group will hold the May meeting at the conference room of the Life Enrichment Center of Shelby Monday, May 19, 6:00pm. The conference room is located at the back of the building. The center is located off Hwy 18 North on Life Enrichment Blvd, just north of Cornerstone Dentistry. Each person attending should bring his/her own meal. Drinks- coffee and water - will be provided. The program will be presented by Janet Walker, a polio survivor. She will share her story of life with polio. If you are a polio survivor please plan to attend. Feel free to bring a caregiver with you. 5th Annual Casar Masonic Charity Ride
        The 5th Annual Casar Masonic Charity Ride will be Saturday, May 31. The ride will equally benefit The Masonic Home for Children and Whitestone. Sign in by 11:30am. Bikes leave at 12:00pm.         Kiwanis Club of Shelby is a group of professionals who are involved in the community and looking to change Cleveland County, one child at a time. This fundraising and project oriented club meets the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month at noon at Deer Brook Restaurant, 201 Deer Brook Drive, Shelby, NC; or the 2nd Thursday evening of every month at 5:30pm at Dragonfly Wine Market, 101 West Warren Street, Shelby, NC.         Survivors of Suicide Support Group meets twice a month, with a daytime and evening meeting. The Evening Group meets the 2nd Monday of every month from 6:30pm - 8:00pm at The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer (502 W. Sumter Street, Shelby, NC).  The Daytime Group meets the last Tuesday of every month from 11:30am - 1:30pm at the Cleveland Memorial Library (104 Howie Drive, Shelby, NC). Piecemakers Quilt Guild
