Neighborhood Calendar May 16th Edition
Piecemakers Quilt Guild
        Piecemakers Quilt Guild meets the first Wednesday of each month from 10:00am to 12:00pm at the Lincoln County Senior Center, Lincoln Campus of Gaston College, 511 Aspen Street, Lincolnton, NC, in room 319. We are here to teach and encourage those interested in the art of quilting. Visitors and new members are welcome.
        We also have a new class that meets on the second Thursday of each month from 10:00am to 3:00pm to provide one to one instruction to beginning quilters. Contact Linda at 704-483-2778 for more information on this class.
Kiwanis Club, Shelby
        Kiwanis Club of Shelby meets the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month at noon at Deer Brook Restaurant, 201 Deer Brook Drive, Shelby. 704-482-4419. Membership dues are $110 per quarter which includes meals and dues.
NAMI Rutherford Cleveland
        The National Alliance on Mental Illness/Rutherford Cleveland hosts a Mental Illness Family Support Group, always on the 3rd Tuesday of the month, 7:00-8:15pm., Cleveland County Red Cross Building, 1333 Fallston Road, Shelby, NC. This Family Support Group is specifically geared to the parents, grandparents, spouses, siblings, adult children and close relatives of persons suffering from severe and persistent mental illnesses. The illnesses covered are: Depression (unipolar), Manic Depression (bipolar), Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and other neurobiological brain disorders. These meetings are confidential and a safe place to talk with other families members going through the same experiences. We Are Families Helping Families! Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, Shelby
        DBSA support groups are open to anyone who is diagnosed with a mood disorder, has a family member or friend who is diagnosed, or who thinks they might have depression or bipolar disorder. DBSA support groups are not run by professionals, but instead offer peer-to-peer support. The support group meets every Tuesday from 6:30-8:00pm at The Episcopal Church in Shelby. Cleveland County Library, Shelby
        THROUGH THE GARDEN GATE…Spend your lunch hour at the library and feed your mind! The Main Library in Shelby is continuing the series of programs for our community that will give folks a chance to spend their lunch hour being entertained. The idea is to bring your bag lunch and the library will provide water, tea and a great program. The programs will be held in the Plaster Meeting Room and you can “come through the garden gate” entrance. The programs will be on the first & third Thursdays of every month from 12:15-12:45 and will feature stories, music and educational topics.
        The Library Book Club meets the second Thursday of every month from 10:30am - 12:00 noon. The book for the month of April is “The Round House” by Louise Erdrich. Everyone is invited.
    Singles Dinner Group, Shelby

Upper Cleveland Bulldog Football and Cheer Signups
         Upper Cleveland Bulldog Football and Cheer Signups will be held on the following dates: 05/16/13, 06/16/2013, 08/01/13 and from 6:00pm - 8:00pm at the Piedmont Community Center in Lawndale. Additionally sign up date will be held on 08/03/2013 from 9:00am - 11:00am at the Piedmont Community Center in Lawndale. Registration fee $75 for football, please bring a copy of your childs birth certificate. Registration fee is $35 for cheerleading. Yard & Bake Sale to Benefit Cancer Patient
         Yard and bake sale to benefit cancer patient Darlene Surratt. It’s more than a yard sale on Saturday, May 18, at 7 a.m. until, at Shelby Alarm parking lot. Door prize raffles and face painting will add to the fun. Sausage biscuits, baked goods, and handcrafted items will be for sale. All proceeds will go for medical and living expenses for Darlene Surratt, a program assistant at Life Enrichment Center, who is battling cancer. Those who have already donated door prizes are First Resort Spa, Mark Kay, Broad River Roasters, Berry Fields Farms, The Alabaster Jar and more. Shelby Alarm is located at 2408 Kings Road Extension in Shelby.
The Broad River Geneological Society
         The Broad River Geneological Society will be having their Annual Open House, May 18, 10:00am to 4:00pm. Hotdogs and desserts will be available. Anyone thats interesting in finding their ancestors are welcomed to come on this day or if you are interested in local history. Our Library is located at 1145 County Home Road in Shelby. We are across from Putnam Memorial Baptist Church. If you are not able to attend on this day you are always welcome to visit the Library. Our hours of operation are every Tuesday night from 6:00-8:00pm - 2nd and 3rd Saturdays of every month 9:00am - 1:00pm - and also 2nd and 3rd Mondays every month Noon to 4:00pm.
Life Enrichment Center Adult Day Care & Heatlh Service, Shelby
         The next meeting of the family caregivers at the Life Enrichment Center in Shelby will focus on preventing agitation and what to do if someone does get upset. Open to the public and free of charge, the meeting will be held Tuesday, May 21, from 5:30-7:00pm. Life Enrichment staff provides a free sitter service for the person with dementia, but a reservation must be made for the sitter service by calling 704-484-0405 by May 14. Life Enrichment has been providing day care for adults with dementia for more than 32 years.
        Pat Snyder, author of Treasures in the Darkness will share insights about extending the early stage of Lewy Body Dementia and Parkinson’s Disease Tuesday, May 28, at the Life Enrichment Center in Shelby. Her husband’s diagnosis combined elements of both Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. She says there is hope; caregivers can make everyday life better. The program is free of charge and open to the public. Crest High Band Spring Outdoor Concert
         Crest High Band Spring Outdoor Concert,  Featuring the Crest Marching Chargers, May 21, 7:00pm. Cleveland Community College Amphitheater. Girl Scout Fundraiser
         Girl Scouts Bake Sale, Pet Supply Raffle, Fashion Show and Adoption, Saturday, May 18, 9:00am -1:00pm at Rollover, 105 West Warren Street, Shelby. $2 per ticket or 3 for $5. Bake Sale 9:00am-1:00pm. Take your goodies to “Blanket the Park” Event. Raffle Items Include items from Rollover, Whiskers, Nails, and Puppy Dog Tails, Old Navy, SubWay and other local vendors. Fashion show starts at 10:30. Call Rollover or email below to sign up. Only $5 entrance fee. Project Details: The team rescued a cat and puppy from the shelter. We are looking for loving homes to place them. Applications for placement can be submitted May 1 at Rollover. Donations are welcome. Adoption Family will receive: Initial vaccines, spaying, and a personal care kit. Juliette (the puppy) will receive a free deluxe dog house. Savannah (the cat) will receive a fantastic cat tree. Raffle tickets are $2. Fashion show entrance is $5. All proceeds support the cost of spaying the animals. Please come out and support our community service project!         Saturday, May 25 - “Streamside Hike” Join a Park Ranger at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 11:00 am for a streamside hike along the Jacob Fork River.
        Saturday, May 25 - “The 10 Essentials” What items should you always carry with you when hiking?  Meet a Park Ranger at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm to learn about the “10 Essentials”.
        Saturday, May 18 - “First-Aid 101” Join a Ranger at the Visitor Center at 11:00 am to learn some basic first-aid skills.  Participants will learn how to splint a leg, care for burns, stop a bleed and recognize signs and symptoms of other injuries and illnesses. “The Amazing World of Spiders” Silk stronger than steel?  Join Ranger Waltz at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm for an informative presentation on spiders. Participants will have the opportunity to catch and examine spiders that are alive.     
        Sunday, May 19 -  “Knot Tying 101” Knot tying  is a fundamental skill for many tasks. Whether you are a beginning climber, backpacker or just want to learn a few knots.  Join a Ranger at the Visitor  Center at 2:00 pm.
        Sunday, May 26 - “Birds: The Good, the Bad, and the Funny”  Join a Park Ranger fat the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm for an indoor program and a short hike to identify and to learn more about our feathered friends.
        Saturday, June 1 - “Hike, Bike & Ride event for National Trails Day”. Hike, bike or ride the designated trails of your choice. To be eligible for an award participants must register between 8:00 and 10:00am and then hike, bike or horseback ride to a backcountry check-in station. Participants must complete the return trip to claim their reward. Route loops are moderate to strenuous and will vary from 3 miles to 18 miles. This event is free and open to the public.             South Mountains State Park is located south of Morganton off of old Highway 18.  We welcome the community to join us for our monthly educational interpretive programs.  Call the park office at (828) 433-4772 for more information.
Cleveland County Tennis Association
         A benefit tennis tournament, Tennis Under the Stars, hosted by Cleveland County Tennis Association and Boiling Springs Tennis Teams will be held at the Gardner Webb Tennis courts on May 24, at 6:00pm.
