Neighborhood Calendar May 26th edition
Used Book Sale – Saturday, May 28th
       We’re having a Used Book Sale Saturday, May 28th starting at 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. We have Fiction, Nonfiction and Historical books for sale at the Broad River Genealogical Society Library’s Open House, 1145 County Home Road, (across from Putnam Baptist Church), Shelby, NC. The Sparks – Hosting Girls Basketball
        The sparks is looking for girls 14 and under, who wants to play basketball, but can afford to pay the expensive fee. There will be a uniform fee of $75; all parents will have to help out with the fundraiser activities, so everyone can play in the games. We are hosting a girl’s team and camp which will be held every Saturday at 8 am until the end of the summer. For more information, please call 980-229-1800. There’s no charge for camp.

New Support Group for Depression and Bipolar Disorder
        Now people living with depression or bipolar disorder or their family members will have a new place to find hope, help and support. Boys & Girls Club Summer Day Camp
        Enrollment for the 2011 Boys & Girls Club Jack Schweppe Summer Day Camp is now open. Registration is weekdays from 2 PM to 7 PM. at the Boys & Girls Club building, located at 412 West Sumter Street, directly behind Shelby Middle School in Shelby.  Parent Packets containing all materials and program information, are available during the Club’s regular After-School program hours. Registration is ongoing, space permitting, first come-first served.  Financial Assistance is available with regular Day Camp session fees based on a sliding scale according to income.  Details on fees are available through the Boys & Girls Club office. The 2011 Summer Day Camp schedule offers three sessions, each three weeks.  Session 1 is Monday, June 13 through Friday, July 1.  Session 2 is Tuesday, July 5 through Friday, July 22.  Session 3 is Monday, July 25 through Friday, August 12. Day Camp is open weekdays from 8:00 AM to 5:30 in the evening with the program schedule varying daily.  Campers participate in structured daily Club activities and are placed with children of like age. Younger camper groups are coed.  Older campers are separated by gender.  Day Camp is open to all boys and girls, rising first graders through age 14. Older campers may be registered with restrictions. Disabled American Veterans
        Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 18. Regular Meetings are held the 2nd Thursday of each month at 7:00 pm at 1138 E. Marion St., Shelby, NC. On the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month from 9:00 - 11:00 am, we will open ot assist Veterans and answer questions. Free coffee and donuts served. The DAV Transportation Network provides transportation to and from the Asheville Veterans Medical Center in Oteen, NC for all scheduled appointments; for veterans with no other form or means of transportation.         This event will be held Memorial Weekend, May 26th - 29th at Circle J Music Park in Boiling Springs, NC. Parking Lot Flea Market
       Back by popular demand, the Neal Senior Center is offering the Parking Lot Flea Market (outdoor market) again in 2011. There will be several events during the Spring and Fall of the year. The cost will continue to be $5 per parking space with a maximum of 3 spaces available per vendor. 1st Annual Carey Heavner Foundation Golf Tournament
        May 28, 2011 1st annual CAREY HEAVNER FOUNDATION golf tournament starts at 1:00 PM at Deer Brook Golf Club, Shelby NC. Type of tournament: Captains choice. 1st Annual Cruzin For Christ, Lawndale
        Come join us for our 1st Annual Cruzin for Christ to be held at Lawndale Park on June 11. The car show will start at 5:00 pm and ending at 9:00 pm. All makes and models of cars, trucks, motorcycles are welcome. There will be live music, hamburgers, hot dogs, bbq (which starts at 12:00 pm until sold out) and the Dairy Queen Ice Cream trailer!!!! There is a $10 registration fee and you can pre-register by calling 704-470-7668. All sorts of activities and vendors will be available. “God should be our steering wheel. Not our spare tire.” ps: This is in conjunction with the Lawndale Fest which is held annually the second Saturday of June.

Second Annual Masonic Charity Ride
      Casar Lodge 579 will have the Second Annual Masonic Charity Ride on Saturday, June 11. Check  in from 11am until 1pm at Casar Park.  25.00  for  single  rider 35.00  for double. All Proceeds will go to the Masonic Home for Children. For more info call Eric Newton at 704-692-8503


Philadelphia Community Organization
Of Lawndale, Vendors Needed
       The Philadelphia Community Organization of Lawndale (PCOL) is in the process of planning our 13th annual Juneteenth celebration which will be held at 165 Schenck Farm Rd., Lawndale, NC on June 18.  The celebration will begin with a parade at 1 p.m. (lineup 12:30 pm) and the festivities starting at 1:30 pm-4 pm. We welcome any participation from the surrounding communities. If you have a group or individual activity and would like to participate in the festivities please contact us at the numbers below. First Baptist Church, Shelby
       On Wednesday, June 22 we are having a Block Party at the church. The time is 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm for ages 4th and 5th graders. Free Hot Dogs and Sno-Cones. There will be Games, Rides and Slides. Location is in the parking lot on Washington St.
