Relay for Life
The Relay for Life events:
American Cancer Society Lincolnton, NC is holding its annual fundraising evening of events and celebration of survivors on Friday, May 5, 2017. Come ride your motorcycle on a 1 hour police escorted night group ride "BUG RUN" through Western Lincoln County, followed by our lap of lights and thunder around the stadium track that excites all the spectators. The Ride will start and end at the Relay event held at the Lincolnton High School Stadium. First sticker is $10, additional are $5. Upon completion of the ride, the bike with the most bug splats on the sticker wins $100 cash prize. Registration 6:30-8:30pm. Kickstands up 9:00pm. All brands of motorcycle manufacturers are encouraged to participate.

Cleveland County Library Art Gallery, Shelby
The retrospective work of artists Bill and Elaine Horn will be shown April 10 through May 30, 2017 at Cleveland County Library System, 104 Howie Drive, Shelby, Main Branch Art Gallery. Hours: Monday-Thursday 10:00am - 8:00pm Friday and Saturday 10:00am - 2:00pm.
Broad River Genealogical Society Auditions
The Broad River Genealogical Society is excited to revive the original play, "Pullin' Foot to the Broad" written by the founder, Virginia Green DePriest. This play presents some of the events which took place in the settlement on the Broad River (now Cleveland County) and will feature the original families of Allisons, Dobbins, Moores and others from the 1740's to the 1840's. The play will provide a very entertaining evening and education of the founding of the land where we live. The play is scheduled for October 2017. Auditions will be held Saturday, May 6, 2017, 10:00am - 3:00pm at the Shelby City Park Gymnasium. Please bring a recent photo with you if possible. There are 30+ speaking parts available ranging from elementary age to the 60's.

Cleveland County Regional Airport "Fly-In and Open House"
The Cleveland County Regional Airport, 830 College Avenue, Shelby, NC, will be hosting an exciting local event for free called "Fly-In & Open House" on Saturday, May 6, 2017, from 10:00am - 2:00pm. This event is family friendly with lots to offer. There will be food vendors, aircraft and military vehicles on display, a Civil Air Patrol booth, JAARS will be offering plane and helicopter rides for $25-30, safety seminars, and more. Come out and tour the airport facilities, watch planes take off and land, learn about the Civil Air Patrol for youth, enjoy some good food, and maybe even a plane or helicopter ride! Cross Roads 5K and Kids Fun Run, Boiling Springs
Cross Roads 5k and Kids Fun Run will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2017. 5K Run/Walk - 8:00am; ½ Mile Kid's Fun Run - 9:00am. The race will begin on the campus of Gardner-Webb University Football Concourse, Boiling Springs, NC. All race participants should park in/near the football stadium parking lot to pick up their packets. *Race Participants may pick up their race packet on Friday, May 5, 2017 at the Ruby C. Hunt YMCA from 4:00pm-7:00pm or beginning at 7:00am on Saturday May 6, 2017 at event. Register at any Cleveland County Family YMCA or online at clevecoymca.org. Fundraiser/Ruby YMCA.
Cleveland County Choral Society Concerts
The Cleveland County Choral Society concerts will be held Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 7:00pm and Sunday, May 7, 2017 at 3:00pm. Concerts will be held at: Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 1207 West Dixon Blvd., Shelby, NC 28150. Admission $5, available at the door.
CC School System Town Hall Meeting
There will be a Townhall Meeting at Fallston Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, 101 Circle Drive, Fallston NC, Sunday Evening May 7, 2017, 6:30pm to 8pm. There will be an open conversation to discuss any ideas, concerns and issues you may have as they apply to the Cleveland County School System. Everyone is invited to this meeting. There will be at least one more meeting held in the lower end of the county at a date to be announced.

May 7, 21, 28, 2017 - "Fly Fishing 101". Get Hooked! Join angler Jeff Newton at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm for an introductory class on fly fishing. Jeff is an instructor with Project Healing Waters and is a member of Trout Unlimited. All class materials will be provided free. North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission fishing regulations still apply.
May 6, 3, 14, 2017 - "Animals of the South Mountains". Join a Park Ranger to learn about the many animals that call South Mountains home. The program will begin at 2:00 pm in the Visitor Center auditorium.
May 7, 2017 - "The 10 Essentials". What items should you always carry with you when hiking? Meet a Park Ranger at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm to learn about the "10 Essentials".
May 13, 2017 - "The 10 Essentials". What items should you always carry with you when hiking? Meet a Park Ranger at the Visitor Center at 11:00 am to learn about the "10 Essentials".
May 13, 14, 2017 - "Animals of the South Mountains". Join a Park Ranger to learn about the many animals that call South Mountains home. The program will begin at 2:00 pm in the Visitor Center auditorium.
May 20, 27, 2017 - "Streamside Hike". Join a Park Ranger at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 11:00 am for a streamside hike along the Jacob Fork River. "
May 20, 21, 2017 - "Let's Talk Turkey". Yelps, purrs, cuts and cackles. Join a Park Ranger and learn about Wild Turkeys in the South Mountains. Participants will learn about characteristics, habitat, populations, life history and vocalizations. Program starts at 2:00 pm at the Visitor Center.
May 27, 2017 - Wilderness Survival 101". Wilderness Survival 101 will cover basic survival information as covered in the Boy Scouts of America handbook. Topics covered will include basic first aid, shelter and others based on class interest and instructor discretion. Program will be presented by park volunteer, Jeff Newton, who also teaches Fly Fishing 101 and has a great deal of experience in the outdoors. Program is free and open to the public. Meet at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm.
May 28, 2017 - "Knot Tying 101". Knot tying is a fundamental skill for many tasks. Whether you are a beginning climber, backpacker or just want to learn a few knots. Join a Ranger at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm.

Shelby High School Class of 1977 Reunion
The Shelby High School Class of 1977 40th Anniversary Reunion will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2017, at the Don Gibson Theatre, 318 S. Washington Street, Shelby, NC, from 7:00pm until midnight. The State Theater was renamed The Don Gibson Theatre in honor of the famous Shelby native known for his songwriting skills. There will be heavy hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar, and Mr. Dick Hamrick (their chemistry teacher!) will be the DJ. Cost is $30 per person before July 31, 2017.
