Lincoln County Parks & Recreation, www.lincolncounty.org, is now offering Pickleball and Senior Chair Volleyball at Block Smith Gym, 130 Rhodes St., Lincolnton, NC. Pickleball (open to everyone) is being held on Thursdays from 10:00am - 12:00pm while Senior Chair Volleyball is being held on Tuesdays from 10:00am - 12:00pm. They are also offering Pickleball at East Lincoln Community Center, 8160 Optimist Club Rd., Denver, NC, on Mondays and Thursdays from 1:00-3:00pm beginning Thursday, November 10, 2016. South Mountains State Park, 3001 South Mountains Park Avenue, Connelly Springs, NC, will hold these upcoming environmental programs:
Friday, November 11, 18 & 25, 2016 - "Night Hike". Join a Ranger at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 6:00pm for a 3/4-mile hike. Come and experience nature without the benefit of light. Learn to use the rest of your senses as this exploration always yields surprises.
November 13, 2016 - "Leaf Lookers Tree ID Hike". Meet a Park Ranger at the Jacob Fork Parking Area for a short hike to learn about the trees found in South Mountains State Park. Identify 10 common trees and learn why leaves change colors as the trees prepare for fall and winter. Hike will begin at 2:00pm. Saturday, November 12, 2016, "Leaf Lookers Tree ID Hike" will begin at 11:00 am.
Sunday, November 13, & 20, 2016 - "Fly Fishing 101". Get Hooked! Cast your line in one of the state's most pristine mountain trout streams at South Mountains State Park. Whether you want to learn how to tie flies, develop your casting skills, or discover the joy and challenges of fly fishing for the first time, join anglers Jeff Newton and Bob Tupper at the Visitor Center at 2:00pm for an introductory class on fly fishing.
Saturday, November 19 & 26, 2016 - "Skins & Skulls". Look for a Park Ranger and his interesting display of skulls and skins at the Visitor Center. Drop by between 11:00-12:00 and hear about some of the animals that call South Mountains State Park home. "Knot Tying 101". Knot tying is a fundamental skill for many tasks. Whether you are a beginning climber, backpacker or just want to learn a few knots. Join a Ranger at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm.
South Mountains State Park is located south of Morganton off of old Highway 18. They welcome the community to join them for our monthly educational interpretive programs. Call the park office at 828-433-4772 for more information.

Broad River Genealogy Society, Shelby
The Broad River Genealogy Society, 1145 County Home Rd., Shelby, NC will be holding a meeting on Sunday, November 13, 2016, at the Neal Senior Center, 100 T.R. Harris Dr., Shelby, NC, at 3:00pm. (Park and enter at the rear of building). Presenting Laura A. Davenport, a grandmother and retired academic. She has a degree in Biology, an M.S. in Microbiology and a Ph.D in Anthropology/population studies and epidemiology. The presentation will cover: types of DNA: Y, mitochondrial, and autosomal; how each is transmitted generation to generation with emphasis on meiosis and the recombination of autosomal DNA segments; what genealogical problems or mysteries can best be addressed and/or solved by each type of DNA testing; what questions your DNA test can raise; how and from whom to order your DNA test, which is currently considered best and why; what to do as you wait for your results (online resources, blogs, Facebook groups); what to do when you get your results including GEDmatch; contacting matches; where you can get help with your results (blogs and Facebook groups); and where you can get more help. The Foothills Community Choir
The Foothills Community Choir will sponsor a Gospel Sing on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at 6:00pm at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Shelby NC. Southern Sounds Quartet will also be providing music during the evening. A love offering will be taken to benefit patients of the Cleveland-Rutherford Kidney Association.

Cllifford's Army Rescue will hold the Clifford's Army Annual Santa Pics and Bake Sale at Tractor Supply Co., 1655 E. Community Table Thanksgiving Meal, Shelby
The Community Table Thanksgiving Meal is a community effort to bring all areas of the Shelby community together in unity for a shared meal and fellowship. The meal will take place in two locations simultaneously at 4:00pm, Wednesday, November 23, 2016, in some of our community's high need areas. Our goal is to have as many Shelby area businesses, churches, organizations, groups and individuals embrace this idea, not just to serve and provide, but also to come together and enjoy a meal with one another. The two locations are: Jefferson Park and South Side Flea Market. We are excited to have our Shelby Police department participating and attending the meals! The need: Commitments from businesses, churches, groups, and individuals to provide food, supplies and manpower to make this meal happen for our community! Ambassador Baptist College, Lattimore
The public is cordially invited to kick off the Christmas season with Ambassador Baptist College's annual presentation of Handel's Messiah. On Friday, November 25, 2016, and Saturday, November 26, 2016, the college chorale and selected soloists will be singing excerpts from Handel's Messiah, as well as additional Christmas selections. The doors will open each night at 6:15pm and the concert will start at 7:00pm. Both concerts will be held in the R.A. Torrey Auditorium and are free of charge. Selections include "All We Like Sheep," "For Unto Us a Child is Born," "And With His Stripes," and the world-famous Hallelujah Chorus. Please plan to come early since seating is limited. A nursery for young children will be provided. At the conclusion of the concert, a love offering will be received for the student scholarship fund. Ambassador Baptist College is a private, four-year college dedicated to training young people for the ministry.
