National Alliance on Mental Illness Rutherford Cleveland
        Mental Illness Family Support Group will meet the third Tueday of every month 6:30-8:00pm, 3rd Tuesday of the month, always on the 3rd Tuesday, at Church of the Redeemer, 502 W. Sumter Street, Shelby, NC. This FREE Support Group offers a safe and confidential place for family members who have individuals with severe and persistent mental illnesses. The  share their experience, strength and hope and give help to others who are going through similar experiences as we have. Illnesses covered in the support group include: Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, also mental disorders with a component of substance abuse, and other neurobiological brain disorders. KidsSenses Children’s InterActive Museum, Cleveland County Memorial Library
        KidsSenses Children’s InterACTIVE Museum will present “Science Shenanigans” at Cleveland County Memorial Library  Wednesday, November 27, 10:30am The program is a part of the library’s “Cool Out of School Day” activities for ages 3-10. Children will explore the meaning of science and how they can find it around them every day. Multiple interactive science demonstrations will be conducted, that will bring chemistry and science alive! Participants may register at the front desk or by calling 704-487-9069. Ambassador Baptist College, Lattimore
        A Christmas Prelude at Ambassador Baptist College The public is cordially invited to kick off the Christmas season with Ambassador Baptist College’s annual presentations of “A Christmas Prelude featuring Handel’s Messiah.” On Friday, November 29, and Saturday, November 30, the college chorale and selected soloists will be singing excerpts from Handel’s Messiah, as well as additional Christmas selections. The doors will open each night at 6:15pm, and the concert will start at 7:00pm. Both concerts will be held in the R.A. Torrey Auditorium and are free of charge. Selections include Angels from the Realms of Glory, For Unto Us a Child Is Born, Still Is the Night, and the world-famous Hallelujah Chorus. Please plan to come early since seating is limited. A nursery for young children will be provided. At the conclusion of the concert, a love offering will be received for the student scholarship fund. 2013 Boiling Springs Christmas Parade
        The Boiling Springs Christmas Parade will be held on Sunday, December 1, 3:00pm. Entry forms are available online at www.boilingspringsnc.net. After the parade, attendees will have an opportunity to visit with Santa until 5:00pm at the Boiling Springs Museum located at 109 South Main Street. Shelby American Legion Post 82
        Shelby American Legion Post 82 is sponsoring the annual high school oratorical contest. It is open to students in grades 9-12, including those home-schooled, who are citizens of the U.S. or lawful permanent residents. The local contest will be held Saturday, January 11, in the fellowship hall of Ascension Lutheran Church in Shelby. The winner will advance to district competition and, if successful there, to state and national competition. Prize money and college scholarships are awarded. Post 82 plans to offer prizes to local winners. Cleveland County students who are interested should contact their high school or notify Post 82 contest chairperson Ludy Wilkie at ludy@shelby.net.
New Support Group for Depression and Bipolar Disorder
       The local chapter of the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) will host regular, confidential, peer-led, self-help support group meetings on Tuesdays from 6:30-8:00pm at The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, Shelby. DBSA support groups are open to anyone who is diagnosed with a mood disorder, has a family member or friend who is diagnosed, or who thinks they might have depression or bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression). DBSA support groups are not run by professionals, but instead offer peer-to-peer support which is an important component of recovery from mental illness for many people. DBSA is the nation’s leading patient-directed organization focusing on the most prevalent mental illnesses - depression and bipolar disorder. The organization has over 400 independent local chapters that operate over 1000 self-help support groups around the United States.         Survivors of Suicide Support Group meets twice a month, with a daytime and evening meeting. The Evening Group meets the 2nd Monday of every month from 6:30pm - 8:00pm at The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer (502 W. Sumter Street, Shelby, NC).  The Daytime Group meets the last Tuesday of every month from 11:30am - 1:30pm at the Cleveland Memorial Library (104 Howie Drive, Shelby, NC). Sponsored by the Mental Health Association in Cleveland County, this group provides a safe and confidential place for those who have experienced the unique loss of suicide to find help, healing and hope. Our group is open to those who have lost a family member, friend or co-worker to suicide.
