On Friday, October 28, 2016, Burns Bulldogs will hold a Carnival from 3:30-6:00pm, free admission, with bounce houses, cornhole tournament and games, photo booth, hayride and more! Price Community Center, 100 Main St., Lattimore, NC, will hold a Free Dementia Workshop on Friday, October 28, 2016, 6:00-9:00pm. Do you have a loved one who has dementia or you strongly suspect he or she has dementia? You are not alone. This workshop describes what is normal aging and not-normal aging. Hog Happnin', Shelby
Hog Happnin' will celebrate its 25th year on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds. This barbecue competition will have teams from throughout the southeast competing for prize money in four categories: pork, chicken, ribs and brisket. In addition to the competition there is an Arts and Crafts fair, Car Show, Motorcycle Show, Little Miss and Teen Miss Hog Happnin' and Dirty Grass Soul Band will be playing on the main stage at 1:00pm. There is also a circus, games for the kids and other entertainment. BBQ and Ribs plates as well as burgers and hot dogs are available. Rock Springs Park, 6684 Pine Ridge Drive, Denver, NC, will open their "Hiking Trail" Saturday, November 5, 2016 at Rock Springs Nature Preserve, 2:00pm to 4:00pm. Join them as they officially open the newest hiking trail, part of the Lincoln County Parks along with the Carolina Thread Trail. Saturday, November 5, 2016 - "Leaf Lookers Tree ID Hike". Meet a Park Ranger at the Jacob Fork Parking Area for a short hike to learn about the trees found in South Mountains State Park. Identify 10 common trees and learn why leaves change colors as the trees prepare for fall and winter. Hike will begin at 11:00am and 2:00pm. Sunday, November 6 & 13, 2016 - "Leaf Lookers Tree ID Hike" will begin at 2:00pm. Saturday, November 12, 2016, "Leaf Lookers Tree ID Hike" will begin at 11:00 am.
Sunday, November 6, 13, & 20, 2016 - "Fly Fishing 101". Get Hooked! Cast your line in one of the state's most pristine mountain trout streams at South Mountains State Park. Whether you want to learn how to tie flies, develop your casting skills, or discover the joy and challenges of fly fishing for the first time, join anglers Jeff Newton and Bob Tupper at the Visitor Center at 2:00pm for an introductory class on fly fishing.
Friday, November 11, 18 & 25, 2016 - "Night Hike". Join a Ranger at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 6:00pm for a 3/4-mile hike. Come and experience nature without the benefit of light. Learn to use the rest of your senses as this exploration always yields surprises.
Saturday, November 19 & 26, 2016 - "Skins & Skulls". Look for a Park Ranger and his interesting display of skulls and skins at the Visitor Center. Drop by between 11:00-12:00 and hear about some of the animals that call South Mountains State Park home. "Knot Tying 101". Knot tying is a fundamental skill for many tasks. Whether you are a beginning climber, backpacker or just want to learn a few knots. Join a Ranger at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm.

Broad River Genealogy Society, Shelby
The Broad River Genealogy Society, 1145 County Home Rd., Shelby, NC will be holding a meeting on Sunday, November 13, 2016, at the Neal Senior Center, 100 T.R. Harris Dr., Shelby, NC, at 3:00pm. (Park and enter at the rear of building). Presenting Laura A. Davenport, a grandmother and retired academic. She has a degree in Biology, an M.S. in Microbiology and a Ph.D in Anthropology/population studies and epidemiology. The presentation will cover: types of DNA: Y, mitochondrial, and autosomal; how each is transmitted generation to generation with emphasis on meiosis and the recombination of autosomal DNA segments; what genealogical problems or mysteries can best be addressed and/or solved by each type of DNA testing; what questions your DNA test can raise; how and from whom to order your DNA test, which is currently considered best and why; what to do as you wait for your results (online resources, blogs, Facebook groups); what to do when you get your results including GEDmatch; contacting matches; where you can get help with your results (blogs and Facebook groups); and where you can get more help.
