Neighborhood Calendar Oct. 27th edition
    Piecemakers Quilt Guild
   “Piecemakers Quilt Guild” meets the first Wednesday of each month from 10AM – 12PM at the Lincoln Co. Senior Center, Room 319, Lincoln Campus of Gaston College, 511 Aspen St., Lincolnton.  We are here to teach and encourage those interested in the art of quilting; visitors & new members are welcome.  Meetings include a business meeting, show-and-tell, and a program related to quilting.  On October 5th Anna Norris will present the program.    11/4 – Holiday Bazaar – Friday, November 4, 8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. The Holiday Bazaar is open to the public and all ages are welcome to shop or eat until they drop.  The Senior Center’s mouth-watering country ham biscuits or plain biscuits as well as pinto plates will be available.Bulk biscuit orders are also available during the Bazaar to area businesses and individuals, but you need to make sure to place your orders early (no later than 5pm on November 1, 2011) by calling Mary Hamrick at the Senior Center (704)482-3488

South Mountain State Park
   Saturday, November 5 - “Skulls and Skins” - Look for a Park Ranger and his interesting display of skulls and skins at the Visitor Center.  Drop by between 11:00-12:00 and hear about some of the animals that call South Mountains State Park home.
  
  Saturday, November 5 - “Where Am I?  How to Use a Map and Compass”  Join a Park to learn the fundamentals of map reading, identification of land features, and compass use.  Bring a compass if you have it, and meet at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 2:00 pm.

Cleveland Rutherford Kidney Association Events

Shelby Parks & Recreation
        Visit the Halloween Spooky Train and Talking Pumpkin at the Shelby City Parks & Recreation. The Train yard and Tunnel Decorated October 27-31  (1-6 PM) plus open until 8 PM October 29. Talk to the Pumpkin that talks back from 3-6 PM on October 27, 28, 29 and 31. Please note: On Sunday October 30, the Carrousel and Train will only be open as part of the GCCBA Greatest Treat event. (4-6:00 PM, Free).
Deer Brook, Shelby
  As a Senior Project, Tray Sellers will hold a 2 man Captains Choice  at Deer Brook Golf  Club on Friday, October 28, at 1 p.m. Cost is: $50 per person, which includes lunch. Door Prizes Closest to the pin, and Cash Prizes. Shot gun start.
Kings Mountain Little Theatre

Shelby City Park Shag Lessons
  Shag Lessons will be held on Tuesday, November 1 at Shelby City Park (Girl Scout Hut). All ages are welcome. No parnter needed. Beginners get regular class instruction plus review sessions and individual help as needed. Class one night a week on Tuesday. Ample time to learn and practice the steps in class. Beginners learn the Basic, Female Turn, Start, Belly Roll, Juniors FREE with paid parent. Instructors: Sam and Regina Lail. $40 per person. This is six 1-hour lessons. Uptown Shelby’s Taste of the Holidays
  Shelby, is already building excitement for the coming holiday season. The Taste of the Holidays crawl will be Thursday, November 3rd, from 5:00 to 9:00 P.M. Customers taking part in the event can purchase a passport to enjoy sample featured menu items at our fine uptown eateries and special discounts at participating shops and restaurants. Patrons may buy a passport for the crawl for $5.00 in advance or $10.00 on the night of the event. Visit a restaurant and sample a complimentary dish, and the holder will get their passport punched. Likewise at participating merchants, customers can visit, get their passport punched and take advantage of special discounts or offerings. Those who get all the punches will be entered in a special drawing for a grand Uptown gift basket. CC Home Builders’ 20th Annual Hog Happnin’
  The 20th Annual Hog Happnin’, supported by the Cleveland County Home Builders, will take place on Friday & Saturday, November 4-5. This charity event which supports the Children’s Homes of Cleveland County and several other local non-profits, takes place
at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds; admission to the grounds is free on Friday evening and there is a $2 gate fee on Saturday; pre-purchased meal tickets for Saturday include the gate fee. In addition to the Taster’s Choice starting at 6:00 on Friday evening, a DJ will play on the main stage from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. followed by Karaoke at 9:00 p.m.  Adults and youth can enjoy playing “Minute to Win It” at 7:30.  On Saturday there is a BBQ competition, a car and motorcycle show and an outside arts and crafts show. PCOL Of Lawndale
        The PCOL will be hosting the Cleveland County Community Development Cooperation at it’s next monthly meeting on Monday, November 7, at 6pm at Philadelphia United Methodist, 4828 Philadelphia Rd. Lawndale, NC 28090. The CDC will be discussing ways in which they can assist individuals who have lost their job due to layoffs and are facing foreclosure. Lions Club/Boys And Girls Club Peace Poster Contest
        Lions   Clubs  International  and  The  Shelby  Lions  Club ,  in  partnership  with  the  Boys  and  Girls  Clubs  of  Cleveland  County,  is sponsoring  a  Peace  Poster  Contest  for   children  ages  11,  12,  and  13.     The  theme  is  “Children  Know  Peace.”   The  posters  will  be  turned  in  to  the  Boys  and  Girls  Clubs  and  judged  by  a  committee  from  the  Lions  Club.    The  local  Lions will  give  the  local  winner  a  certificate  and  a  fifty  dollar  prize,  and  he or  she  will attend  November  8th  Shelby  Lions  Club  meeting  with  parents.    The  poster  will  advance  to  higher  levels  of  competition.   The  international   winner  will  receive  five  thousand dollars  and  a  trip  to  the  United Nations. Entries  should  be  turned  in  before  November  1st.
Carillon Assisted Living Of Shelby
        Carillon Assisted Living of Shelby will be hosting an educational seminar for Veterans and their families regarding Aid & Attendance, a VA benefit available to veterans and spouses to assist with senior care. The event will be held on 11/11/11 (Veteran’s Day) 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Presenter will be Lane Ginsberg from the American Association of Wartime Veterans. Lunch will be served and a ceremony honoring the veterans will follow. Families of veterans are also invited to attend! Southern Christmas Show with Shelby City Park
        Shelby City Park will sponsor a trip to the Southern Christmas Show at the Park (formerly Charlotte Merchandise Mart) on Monday, November 14.  The bus will leave from the parking lot at Rutherfordton Senior Center at 8:00 a.m. and from Shelby City Park at 8:30 a.m. They will leave Charlotte around 4:00 p.m.  and be back to the park around 5 p.m. Cost is $17 per person, due when signing up. This includes the transportation (by Travel Lynx) and the cost of the ticket. Tickets will be given out that morning on the bus. Burns High School Spanish Club 5K Race
        Burns High School Spanish Club 5K R.A.C.E. - Respecting All Cultures and Ethnicities: Saturday, November 19 · 8am-11am. Burns High Stadium, 307 E.         Right now you can notify the City that you are interested in receiving a Recycle cart, that will be delivered to your residence in December, by signing up on our website at www.cityofshelby.com.  Please locate and click on the green Recycle icon at the lower right-hand side of our home page and fill out the information requested and click submit. More information coming soon! Please encourage your friends, family and neighbors to recycle - it’s a great thing to do for our environment and our County landfill.
