Broad River Genealogical Society will be hosting speaker Robert Wells on Sunday, October 8, 2017 at 3:00pm at the Neal Senior Center in Shelby, NC. Entrance at rear of building. Please join them for an interesting and informative presentation from Mr. Wells on DNA research, techniques and strategies. Open to all. No membership required.

South Mountains State Park, 3001 South Mountains Park Avenue, Connelly Springs, NC, Upcoming Environmental Programs: Sunday, October 8, 15, 22, 29, 2017 - "Skulls & Skins" - Look for a Park Ranger and his interesting display of skulls and skins at the Visitor Center. Drop by between 2:00 -3:00 pm and hear about some of the animals that call South Mountains State Park home. Saturday, October 7, 14, 2017 - "The 10 Essentials" - What items should you always carry with you when hiking? Meet a Park Ranger at the Visitor Center at 11:00 am to learn about the "10 Essentials". Sunday, October 8, 15, 22, 29, 2017 - "Fly Fishing 101" - Get Hooked! Join angler Jeff Newton at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm for an introductory class on fly fishing. Please bring all personal equipment available. Classes may vary based on interest and skill level of the participants. North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission fishing regulations still apply. Saturday, October 14, 2017 - "Bats" - Are bats blind? Do they fly into your hair? Do they turn into vampires? Join a Park Ranger at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm to learn some Bat facts and have an opportunity to view some Bats. Saturday, October 21, 28, 2017 - "Tree ID Hike" - Join a Park Ranger for a 1.0-mile hike along the Hemlock Nature Trail. Tree identification will be the focus of this hike. Meet at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 11:00 am. "Wilderness Survival 101" - Wilderness Survival 101 will cover basic survival information as covered in the Boy Scouts of America handbook. Topics covered will include basic first aid, shelter and others based on class interest and instructor discretion. Program will be presented by park volunteer, Jeff Newton, who also teaches Fly Fishing 101 and has a great deal of experience in the outdoors. Program is free and open to the public. Please meet at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm. "Masked Bandits" - Fact or Fiction: Do raccoons wash their food? Find out the answer to this and much more about those furry little "masked bandits" at South Mountains State Park. Meet Ranger Amanda at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm to learn a few myths and legends as well as fun facts about raccoons. All ages welcome! "Meet the Author" Crouse, NC
Crouse Community Photo and History Project is pleased to announce special guest speaker Robert C. Carpenter who will be speaking on his most recently published book, "Gaston County, North Carolina in the Civil War," from McFarland Press of Jefferson, NC. Retired principal, Robert C. Carpenter will be signing books that will be available for purchase, as well as giving a presentation followed by a Q & A. Carpenter was an adjunct professor at Belmont Abbey College, he recently retired to babysit a new grandchild, and is the president and editor of Footprints in Time, the bulletin for the Gaston Lincoln Genealogical Society. He lives in Bessemer City, NC. Order of The Eastern Star Bazaar and Bake Sale
Camp Call Chapter No. 287 Order of the Eastern Star will be holding their first Bazaar and Bake Sale on Saturday, October 14, 2017, from 8:00am until 12:00noon. This will be held at Camp Call Masonic Lodge, Highway 226, N. 3802 Polkville Road, Shelby, NC. There will be sausage and ham biscuits for sale along with handmade craft items and baked goods.
City of Shelby Fall Bulky Item Pick-up
The City of Shelby Solid Waste Department is having the Fall Bulky Item Pick-up the week of October 16-19, 2017. Beginning on October the 13th, you may begin placing items such as: furniture, boxes, mattresses, and bagged clothes, etc., on the curbside without being subject to citations or fines. Please DO NOT place any items in the street or mix these items with limbs, leaves, or grass. The Solid Waste Department does not pick-up items such as: appliances, electronics, televisions, tires, building materials, paints, oils, and batteries, these items may be taken to the Cleveland County Landfills. Please have your bulky items available by 7:00am, they will be picked up only on the same day during the week that your garbage is scheduled for pick up. Items placed or left on the curb after October 19, 2017 will be subject to citations and fines. There will be no leaf or brush collection during bulky item pick up week.

The Shelby Mission Camp in partnership with ACCES (Accessing Cleveland County Elderly Services) will host a Family Caregivers Appreciation Brunch on Thursday, November 2, 2017, 11:00am till 1:00pm. The brunch will be held at the Shelby Mission Camp, 302 Sharpton Drive, Shelby, NC. All family caregivers and one guest are invited to attend at no charge. The purpose of this brunch is to give caregivers a break from the stress of caring for a loved one with a time of good food, fellowship and entertainment. The Norsemen Motorcycle Club Partners with The Salvation Army to help Kids
The Norsemen Motorcycle Club Partners with The Salvation Army to help local kids Saturday, November 4, 2017, at 4:00pm, at 119 Lynch St., Forest City, NC. The Army's Angel Tree program serves children up to age 12 to insure that each child has something for Christmas. New, unwrapped toys and clothing can be dropped off at boxes around the county or at Norsemen MC Club House, where the dinner will be held. CC Second Annual Veteran's Day Parade
The Cleveland County's Second Annual Veteran's Day Parade will be held Saturday, November 11, 2017, at 10:00am. Route begins at Lafayette and Graham Streets in Uptown Shelby. Includes bands, floats, Veteran organizations, city and county officials, classic vehicles and more. Parade followed by Veterans' Day Service on Shelby's Historic Court Square at 11:00am.
