Saturday, October 8, 2016. "Knot Tying 101" Knot tying is a fundamental skill for many tasks. Whether you are a beginning climber, backpacker or just want to learn a few knots. Join a Ranger at the Visitor Center at 11:00am. "Black Bears: Majestic Creatures of the Wild" How dangerous are black bears? Can we coexist? Why are black bears so unique? What should I do if I see a black bear? The program will begin at 2:00pm in the Visitor Center.
Sunday, October 9, 2016. "Skulls & Skins" Look for a Park Ranger and his interesting display of skulls and skins at the Visitor Center. Drop by between 2:00-3:00pm and hear about some of the animals that call South Mountains State Park home.
Sunday, October 9, 16, 23, 30, 2016. "Fly Fishing 101" Get Hooked! Join anglers Jeff Newton and Bob Tupper at the Visitor Center at 2:00pm for an introductory class on fly fishing. Jeff and Bob are instructors with Project Healing Waters and are members of Trout Unlimited. All class materials will be provided free. Classes may vary based on interest and skill level of the participants. North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission fishing regulations still apply.
Saturday, October 15, 2016. "Bats" Are bats blind? Do they fly into your hair? Do they turn into vampires? Join a Park Ranger at the Visitor Center at 11:00 am to learn some Bat facts and have an opportunity to view some Bats. "Wilderness Survival 101" Wilderness Survival 101 will cover basic survival information as covered in the Boy Scouts of America handbook. Topics covered will include basic first aid, shelter and others based on class interest and instructor discretion. Program will be presented by park volunteer, Jeff Newton, who also teaches Fly Fishing 101 and has a great deal of experience in the outdoors. Program is free and open to the public. Find out the answer to this and much more about those furry little "masked bandits" at South Mountains State Park. Meet Ranger Amanda at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm to learn a few myths and legends as well as fun facts about raccoons. All ages welcome!

Educational Series- "Stress Relief & Relaxation" Work. Family. Grief. Illness. Finances. Life. Stress is all around us, being caused by and effecting every facet of our life. Join them to learn some simple and quick tips for dealing with everyday stress. Open to all in the community. This is a continuation in the monthly educational series hosted by Hospice Cleveland County, Tuesday, October 4, 2016, 5:30pm - 6:30pm at the Hospice Cleveland County Administrative Building, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC.
Hospice Volunteer Training Class Hospice training is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about hospice care and the services provided to the community. This 12 hour course is free. To get credit for the entire course, you will need to attend all days at the times offered or call to schedule a time to complete the training. For more information contact 704-487-4677 ext.111. The Teen Talking Circle, Shelby
Imagine you had a safe place to talk about what's really going on inside you- a space where you are listened to and accepted as you are. Teen Talking Circle is a process and support group for girls 12 and up. Some of the topics include developing self-confidence, understanding relationship boundaries, dealing with conflict and self-care for teenagers. Benefits of the group are: improved social skills, learn new ways to cope, find out you aren't alone, gain a broader perspective of your issues, understand what makes your problems worse. The Teen Talking Circle will meet on Saturdays: October 29, November 5, November 19 and December 10, 2016, at the YMCA in Shelby, NC from 9:30am-11:00am.
