Life Enrichment Center Adult Day Care & Health Service
        Life Enrichment Center Adult Day Care & Health Service, 110 Life Enrichment Blvd., Shelby will be having a work shop, Thursday, October 3. Does your mom have macular degeneration? Do you wonder why people with dementia have vision problems? Experience what they experience. See the world through their eyes and hear through their ears. You will be able to experience the five senses the way older adults do in an Aging Sensitivity Training for families and professional (who can receive 1 CEU). You can walk with bunions, experience picking up coins with arthritic hands, “see” with cataracts. Partners Behavioral Health Management will lead the training. The program is free of charge and open to everyone who is interested in understanding older adults. You may choose one of two times:  2-3:15 or 5:30-6:45pm. “Blessing of the Animals” Association for the Welfare of Animals, Shelby
 Blessing of the Animals, Sunday, October 6, 6:30pm, at The Historic Court Square, Shelby. This event is an opportunity for the community to gather and reflect on the important role that animals play in our lives. A service will be delivered by Pastor Roy Byers, and music will be offered by Chris Cline. This service also offers those who have, or have had special pets or animals a chance to recognize them with the purchase of a luminary. Luminaries may be purchased for $5 each by sending checks or money orders made payable to Association for the Welfare of Animals (AWA PO Box 564 Shelby 28151), and postmarked by October 4. They will also be available on the evening of October 6 on the Court House Square. If purchasing by mail (and we encourage you to do so!), please include names of pets and whether the recognition is honorary or memorial.
Cleveland County Branch NAACP Hosting Forums
The Cleveland County Branch of the NAACP is hosting Forums for the 2013 candidates for the School Board and the City of Kings Mountain. The Forum dates are:

Library at Ruby C. Hunt YMCA, Boiling Springs
        The Library at the Ruby C. Hunt YMCA, Boiling Springs, NC will host an Open House on Tuesday, October 8 from 4:00pm - 6:00pm.  This Open House will showcase a collection of 61 new children’s books that have been provided by a grant from The Libri Foundation of Eugene, Oregon. The goal of The Libri Foundation is to donate quality children’s books to rural public libraries. Families are encouraged to attend this free event to preview the newest additions to our collection of children’s titles. At the Open House, guest readers will share some of their favorite stories.                 The Library at the Ruby C. Hunt YMCA announces the opening of a “Readers on the Move” StoryWalk™ on Tuesday, October 8. This StoryWalk™ will give families the opportunity to read a popular children’s book while spending time together on the Ruby C. Hunt YMCA’s Fitness Trail. This StoryWalk™ is available to the general public free of charge. Families are encouraged to visit the StoryWalk™ on the campus of the Ruby C. Hunt YMCA. This StoryWalk™  is made possible by a grant from the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation and the Library at the Ruby C. Hunt YMCA.

Double Poker Run
A Double Poker Run for Team Vicki will be held on October 12. Rain date will be October 13th. One leaves from Iron Thunder in Hickory and the other leaves from Iron Thunder in Concord They will meet in the middle at Horsefeathers for lots of fun with music, prizes, t-shirt sales, free koozies to the first 50 to register. Broad River Genealogical Society
        The Broad River Genealogical Society will be having a Presentation on the Battle of Cowpens on Sunday October 13, 3:00pm, at the Neal Senior Center in Shelby. John Robertson will tell how important the Battle was in the outcome of the Revolutionary War. We will also recognize some descendants that come and who their grandfathers were at the Battle. Also the Military Order of the Purple Heart will present Broad River with the Purple Heart Sanctioned Library and Achieves. We also hope to honor the Gold Star Mother of the Soldier the MOPH project will be named after. Park at the back of the building. Light refreshments will be served. “Flu Shots” Double Springs Baptist Church, Shelby
        Flu shots will be given October 17 at Double Springs Baptist Church Family Life Center from 4:30-7:00pm. The shots are free of charge for those with Blue Cross and Blue Shield or with Medicare Part B. For all others, the cost is $31. The church is located at 1130 Double Springs Church Road, off Washburn Switch Road. The event is sponsored by the church’s health care team.

Twilight 5k and Glow Run, Fallston
        Twilight 5k and Glow Run will be Saturday, October 19, at Fallston Elementary School. Twilight 5k begins at 5:00pm. Glow Run for kids begins at 6:30pm. Piecemakers Quilt Guild
        Piecemakers Quilt Guild meets the first Wednesday of each month from 10:00am to 12:00pm at the Lincoln County Senior Center, Lincoln Campus of Gaston College, 511 Aspen Street, Lincolnton, NC, in room 319. We are here to teach and encourage those interested in the art of quilting. Visitors and new members are welcome. Mental Health Association of Cleveland County
        Survivors of Suicide Support Group meets twice a month, with a daytime and evening meeting. The Evening Group meets the 2nd Monday of every month from 6:30pm - 8:00pm at The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer (502 W. Sumter Street, Shelby, NC).  The Daytime Group meets the last Tuesday of every month from 11:30am - 1:30pm at the Cleveland Memorial Library (104 Howie Drive, Shelby, NC). Sponsored by the Mental Health Association in Cleveland County, this group provides a safe and confidential place for those who have experienced the unique loss of suicide to find help, healing and hope. Our group is open to those who have lost a family member, friend or co-worker to suicide. Food and Ensure Needed for Food Pantry
        The Service Department at the Council on Aging Senior Center is reaching out to the community for help with our Emergency Food Pantry. We are in need of shelf-stable foods such as vegetables, soup, crackers, salmon, oatmeal, grits, cereal etc. Also, there is a need of dish and laundry detergent; paper products such as toilet paper, paper towels, and tissues.
        We also are starting a drive for Ensure. You can help by donating Ensure either chocolate or vanilla, or ones that are for diabetics. Belwood Veterans Memorial
        The Belwood Veterans Memorial Committee is in the process of adding additional names to our Veteran Memorial. This memorial spans all wars and conflicts from the Revolutionary War to the present. The memorial is for Veterans that at some time attended Old Belwood School, or currently live in the Old Belwood School District or are buried within the old school district. If you are a Veteran or know of someone who meets any of the above criteria and whose name is not currently on the memorial, or you have questions, please contact Steen Richard at 704-538-8841 and request a form.
