Piecemakers Quilt Guild
   “Piecemakers Quilt Guild meets the first Wednesday of each month from 10AM – 12PM at the Lincoln Co. Senior Center, Room 319, Lincoln Campus of Gaston College, 511 Aspen St., Lincolnton.  We are here to teach and encourage those interested in the art of quilting; visitors & new members are welcome.  Meetings include a business meeting, show-and-tell, and a program related to quilting.  Members also meet the third Wed. of each month 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. to work on our community projects.    9/16 -  Health Fair 8:00 – 11:00 AM Sponsored by Council on Aging of Cleveland County, Free Admission. A donation is requested for the SMA 19 Blood Profile.  Amt. not yet designated. Contributions to the Council on Aging are appreciated to cover the costs of these health screening services.
Lions Club Announces $1,000 Scholarship Program
        The  Shelby Lions Club is offering a one thousand dollar scholarship  to  a  student at Shelby High School. The school will select six “Lions of the Month” throughout the school year based on community involvement, financial need, and academic achievement. Each Lion of the Month will be invited, along with his or her parents, to a Shelby Lions Club dinner meeting the 4th Tuesday  at Deer Brook Golf Club as honorary guests. Shelby Lions Club will select a  scholarship winner from the six students based on personal interviews and an essay on “Why Community Service is Important.” The scholarship will be presented at the Shelby High School awards banquet.
Cleveland County Memorial Library September Events
  Introduction to Computers: Basic Usage Classes are being offered this month at Cleveland County Memorial Library.  They will be on Monday, September 19th, 5:30 – 7:00 pm; Thursday, September 22nd, 10:30 am – 12:00 pm and Friday, September 23rd 10:30 am – 12:00 pm.  Call 704-487-9069 ext 0 to sign up for one of the classes. Space is limited to 8 per class.
   Computer Classes using Publisher will be taught in a 2 day class Tuesday and Wednesday, September 20th and 21st, from 10:30 am – 12:00 pm.  We will be working in layers.  Space is limited to 8 per class so please sign up ahead.  If you have your own wireless laptop, you may bring it to the class.  Call 704-487-9069 ext 0 to sign up for the class.
   BOOK SALE – An ongoing book sale is being held at the back of the library.  Stop in for some great deals: books are 25 cents each or 5 for a dollar.  The Friends of the Library are having an ongoing book sale of their nicer books at the front of the library near the front.  The proceeds will go toward buying new books for the library.

South Mountains State Park Programs
        9/17 - “Birds of Prey” Join a Park Ranger at the Visitor Center at 11:00 am and learn about some of the birds of prey found in the South Mountains. You will learn about the distinguishing characteristics of these animals, and find out why they are called birds of prey.
         9/17 - “Skulls and Skins” Look for a Park Ranger and his interesting display of skulls and skins at the Visitor Center.  Drop by between 2:00 –3:00 and hear about some of the animals that call South Mountains State Park home.
        9/18 - “The 10 Essentials” What items should you always carry with you when hiking?  Meet a Park Ranger at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm to learn about the “10 Essentials”.
        9/24 - “9th Annual Nature Day” Join us for the 9th Annual Nature Day at the park.  A variety of programs, exhibits, hikes and music are scheduled for your enjoyment.  Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Contact the park office for more information at (828)433-4772.
   9/25 - “The Roles and Responsibilities of an NC State Ranger” What does a Park Ranger do on a day to day basis?  Meet in the Visitor Center auditorium. At 2:00 pm.

Mental Illness Family to Family Support Group Meeting
        The National Alliance on Mental Illness Rutherford/Cleveland meets the 3rd Thursday of each month. Yard Sale To Benefit Easter Seals UPC
        There will be a benefit yard sale at CVS Pharmacy, 300 E. Grover St., Shelby, NC on Saturday, Sept. 17th, 2011 from 7:00am until 12noon. Easter Seals UPC serves a broad range of people with special needs. Please stop by and help us help them.

Alzheimer’s Association Caregiver Education Conference
   The Alzheimer’s Association Caregiver Education Conference - Sept. 15 - Flint Hill Baptist Church, Shelby, NC. This full day conference will feature a variety of speakers on topics related to caring for a person with Alzheimer’s or related dementia. Community resources will be available to answer questions and offer information. Target audience includes family caregivers, professional caregiver, faith community members and anyone interested in learning more about the disease. Cost $10 per person.
Camp Call Masonic Lodge Annual BBQ
   Camp Call Masonic Lodge will hold their Annual BBQ on Saturday, September 17, 2011, 4 pm-8pm. Cost is: Adults $10.00; Child $6.00; Under 6 FREE. Eat in or carry out.  Blue Oval Performance Club. “Cruise in for BBQ”. Proceeds go to charity. The Masonic Lodge is located at Hwy. 226 North of Shelby.
Down Syndrome Support Group Picnic
        We are starting a new Down syndrome support group in Cleveland Co. We are a sub-group of the DSAC (Down Syndrome Association of Charlotte).  Picnic will be held Saturday, September 17, 2011 from 4-7pm at Optimist Park 1007 Mark Drive Shelby.  If possible last names beginning with A-L bring a drink and M-Z bring a dessert. We will be providing the rest. Rain date September 24, 2011. We want to reach out to not only Cleveland Co. residents but also individuals and families in surrounding counties. Collecting Old Sports Equipment
        Wondering what to do with old sports equipment that is cluttering up your space? Give it a new home. Let it play again at the parks. Donate your gently used items to Friends of the Parks. There is a collection box at Shelby City Park office and boxes will be available at the Football Jamboree on Saturday, September 17, 2011 at Shelby High School. Your donations will be distributed by coaches to sports participants who need them.
‘Relieving Stress the Safe Way’
        “Relieving Stress the Safe Way”  will be the topic for the dementia caregivers meeting at Life Enrichment Adult Day Center in Shelby Tuesday, Sept. 20. Caregivers of people with dementia can sometimes develop the symptoms of dementia themselves, but often, it is stress that causes confusion and memory loss. Relieving stress keeps the caregiver healthier and better able to handle the rigors of caring for someone with dementia. A free sitter service is available for the person with dementia but a reservation must be made by Sept. 13 by calling 704.484.0405. The meeting will be held at 110 Life Enrichment Blvd., located just off Fallston Road between Teddy and Meekins Law Offices and Cornerstone Dental Associates. Jefferson Elementary 32nd Annual Spaghetti Supper
        The 32nd Annual Jefferson Elementary Spaghetti Supper will be held in the Shelby High School cafeteria on Friday, September 23, 2011 from 5:00 until 7:30pm. Join us for dine-in service prior to the Shelby Kings Mountain football game or take advantage of our convenient curb side take-out. Tickets at $6.00 in advance or $7.00 at the door. Enjoy delicious homemade sauce by Jeanette Sun of NiFen Wine & Tapas in Uptown Shelby. All proceeds go to Jefferson PTO.
NWA Father/Son Adventure Weekend
        New Wilderness Adventures’ Father/Son Adventure Weekend Sept 23-25 at River Ministry Lodge in Rutherfordton NC. The purpose of the weekend is to give fathers and sons time in an adventure setting where they can connect or re-connect, establishing the father as his son’s hero and mentor all the while growing stronger in the Lord together.  Don’t worry guys. The NWA team will walk with you through this.  Some of the activities to choose from include: archery, skeet shooting, canoeing, hiking, survival and fishing. Cost $150 per pair ($50 each additional son). Sons 7 and up please. Church groups welcome.  This includes all lodging, food, activities/adventure, and study materials. 2011 September Fest at Cleveland Pines
        Cleveland Pines Nursing Center, 1404 N. Lafayette St., Shelby, NC will host their 2011 September Fest on Saturday, September 24th. There will be a yard sale, hotdog & bake sale, popcorn & slushies, kids games, hay rides, South Mountain Bluegrass band and other vendors. The event is being held in conjunction with the Alzheimer’s Association Mini Memory Walk. Proceeds go to the Resident’s Activity Fund. Mosses Ross Family Reunion
   The Mosses Ross Family Reunion will be held on Sunday, September 25 at 1:30. They will meet at the old fellowship building at Ross Grove Baptist Church, Ross Grove Rd., Shelby. Good ole cookout!!! Hot dogs, burgers, chicken provided. Please bring sides accordingly. We are also trying to put together a photo album, so any old and new family photos would be great. Copies are fine. Mother of Traumatic Brain Injury Survivor To Speak at Life Enrichment
        Denise Boggs will bring her message of how not only to survive TBI but also to thrive when she presents a program at Life Enrichment Center Adult Day Health Service in Shelby Tuesday, Sept. 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. It is free of charge and open to anyone interested in learning more about TBI, which is defined as an injury to the brain caused by an external trauma such as from a fall, car crash, sports injury, being shaken or concussion blasts such as sustained by active duty military personnel. South Mountain Fire & Rescue BBQ & Bluegrass Event
        The South Mountain Fire & Rescue will hold their BBQ and Bluegrass event on Saturday, October 1, 2011. Beginning at 7:00 until 10:00am Blueridge Healthcare will be provided free blood checks (for best results do not eat anything before coming). At 4:00pm the BBQ and bluegrass begins. Our firemen make really good BBQ and the Bluegrass music will be excellent. Come out and enjoy yourself.
