Prostate Cancer Screenings, Shelby
Carolina Urology and Carolinas HealthCare System-Cleveland will present "Free High Risk Prostate Cancer Screenings" Friday, September 23, 2016, from 1:00-5:00pm., at Levine Cancer Institute Cleveland, 201 Grover St., Shelby, NC. Registration is required. To register, please call 980-487-2604. Pre-registration is required for participants meeting the eligibility guidelines listed: This screening is designed for uninsured and high-risk individuals, including: men 40 to 70 years old with an immediate family member (father, brother or son) with prostate cancer; and/or African American men 40 to 70 years old; men who've had a PSA screening in the past two years, or a previous prostate cancer diagnosis, are not eligible. The Cleveland Lincoln County Rose Society
The Cleveland Lincoln County Rose Society in Co-operation with the Lincoln County Extension Master Gardeners present their 43rd Annual Rose Show in Lincolnton on Saturday, September 24, 2016, downtown Lincolnton, NC, at the James W. Warren Citizens Center Auditorium, 115 West Main Street. Entries will be accepted from 8:00-11:00am. The show will be open to the public 2:00-5:00pm. Rose arrangements and bud vases will be for sale along with some plants. All roses on the show tables will be for sale to the public at 5:00pm. If you are growing roses in your yard, you are eligible to enter the 2016 rose show. Entry is free but you must know the name of the rose to place the rose in the proper category for judging. There is a Novice class for new rose growers to enter.
Friendship United Methodist Men Golf Tournament
Friendship United Methodist Men 9th Annual Golf Tournament will be held Saturday, September 24, 2016, at 1:00pm, at Pine Mountain Golf Course: Shotgun Start. Captain's Choice: $220 per team. Cash prizes for the top 3 teams and prizes for the closet to the pin and long drive. Lots of door prizes. Hotdogs will be served. Hole sponsorship will be available for any amount. South Mountain State Park, Connelly Springs
Friends of South Mountains State Park will be sponsoring the 14th Annual Nature Day Sat,, Sept. 24, 2016, 11:00am - 3:00pm. A variety of programs, exhibits and music will be presented throughout the day with a focus on NC State Parks: 100 S'More Years. Music is scheduled at the park picnic shelter from 11:00-2:00pm. Exhibits will be displayed at the Visitor Center, Equestrian Day Use Area and in the Jacob Fork Parking Area. Parking and shuttle rides will be provided by park staff and volunteers. Kids, check out the Jr Ranger Corral at the Visitor Center where there will be lots of fun, free activities for all ages including Animal Tracks. Their 4th annual Costume Contest will be held at the picnic shelter at 12:00 Noon. Birdhouses will be assembled from 11:00am-12:00pm and 1:00-2:00pm, while supplies last. Food and beverages will be available for purchase from South Mountains Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. Campfire stories will be told at the amphitheater on Hemlock Nature Trail. Cleveland County Branch NAACP
The Cleveland County Branch NAACP will have their fourth Sunday Meeting, September 25, 2016, at 4:00pm at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 220 N. Watterson Street, Kings Mountain, NC instead of the Washington Missionary Baptist Church, Shelby, NC. All other meetings throughout this year will be held at the regular meeting place, Washington Missionary Baptist Church. The Regular Branch Meeting will be held at 4:00pm, and the Annual Religious Affairs Program will begin promptly at 5:00pm. A Political Forum will be included on the Religious Affairs Program. Golfers Granting Wishes
2016 Golfers Granting Wishes sponsorship opportunities: Friday, September 30, 2016, at 1:00pm, at Deer Brook Golf Club. In 2016 Make-A-Wish Central and Western North Carolina will grant the wishes of over 280 children: however there are an additional 200 children within their community still waiting for their wishes to be granted. At an average cost of $6,000 per wish, they need help to make each one a reality. The Lord Provides Soup Kitchen, Belwood
On Saturday, October 1, 2016, The Lord Provides Soup Kitchen, Belwood, NC, will hold their 3rd annual Belwood Run for Hunger 5k Run/Walk at The Belwood Community Center with race start time at 8:00am. The Gateway Festival, Kings Mountain
The Gateway Festival, an annual fall festival honoring the anniversary of the Battle of Kings Mountain, will be celebrated all across Downtown Kings Mountain, NC, on Saturday, October 8, 2016. Award-winning author, storyteller, and Road Scholar Randell Jones will present the program ​"Before They Were Heroes at King's Mountain" at 2:00pm at the museum. This program is made possible with support from the Kings Mountain Tourism Development Authority. Visitors will also get a chance to tour the exhibit "Turning Point: The Battle of Kings Mountain."
Depression Support Group
Depression support group meets every Tuesday at 6:30pm until 8:00pm in the Cleveland Memorial Library small conference room. Peer support group for anyone with mental illness who feels they want support from people who "have been there". Contact Jodi with questions at 704-484-8998.
Hospice Cleveland County Holiday Meals
Hospice Cleveland County will order Holiday Meals for their patients/families: In Home, Testa Hospice House in Kings Mountain, NC and Wendover in Shelby, NC, that need them. The complete meal includes: 8-10 lbs. Turkey/Ham, 3 sides, rolls, desert and drink. Often, there is simply not enough money, energy and/or desire to get a holiday meal prepared.
