"Meet the Author": Cleveland County Author, Zachary L. Freeman, a Mooresboro resident and first time author and illustrator, invites you to a book signing for "Inside the Imagination of a little boy, Thursday, September 28, 2017 at 4:30pm in The Library at Ruby C. Hunt YMCA, 1322 Patrick Avenue, Shelby, NC. He created this children's book to show the unique way his son saw the world using his imagination. Opportunities to purchase and autograph books, children's activities, and a chance to check out library books.
Friends of the Park Annual Golf Tournament
Shelby City Park will be holding the "Friends of the Park Annual Golf Tournament" Saturday, September 30, 2017. Compete to be the winning team on the Friends Loving Cup! Prizes: 1st, 2nd, 3rd Place Teams; Closest to the Hole, Longest Drive and $10,000 Hole In One Contest. $40 per player. Mulligans and Throws available, $5 each. Cleveland/Lincoln County Rose Society
The Cleveland/Lincoln County Rose Society will sponsor their 44th Annual Rose Show on Saturday, September 30, 2017. The rose show will be at the Cleveland County Agricultural Office, 130 South Post Road, Shelby, NC. (Hwy 180 next to Food Lion.) Entries will be accepted 7:00 - 10:00am. There is no registration fee and you do not have to be a member to enter roses. The rose show is open to the public 1:00pm - 4:00pm. Rose arrangements will be for sale and all show table roses for sale to the public when the show closes at 4:00pm on Saturday. The rose show is their gift to the community and they hope the public will 'take time to stop and smell the roses'. South Mountains State Park, Connelly Springs
South Mountains State Park, 3001 South Mountains Park Avenue, Connelly Springs, NC, Upcoming Environmental Programs: Sunday, October 8, 15, 22, 29, 2017 - "Fly Fishing 101" - Get Hooked! Join angler Jeff Newton at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm for an introductory class on fly fishing. Please bring all personal equipment available. Classes may vary based on interest and skill level of the participants. North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission fishing regulations still apply. Sunday, October 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, 2017 - "Skulls & Skins" - Look for a Park Ranger and his interesting display of skulls and skins at the Visitor Center. Drop by between 2:00 -3:00 pm and hear about some of the animals that call South Mountains State Park home. Saturday, October 7, 14, 2017 - "The 10 Essentials" - What items should you always carry with you when hiking? Meet a Park Ranger at the Visitor Center at 11:00 am to learn about the "10 Essentials". Saturday, October 14, 2017 - "Bats" - Are bats blind? Do they fly into your hair? Do they turn into vampires? Join a Park Ranger at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm to learn some Bat facts and have an opportunity to view some Bats. Saturday, October 21, 28, 2017 - "Tree ID Hike" - Join a Park Ranger for a 1.0-mile hike along the Hemlock Nature Trail. Tree identification will be the focus of this hike. Meet at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 11:00 am. "Wilderness Survival 101" - Wilderness Survival 101 will cover basic survival information as covered in the Boy Scouts of America handbook. Topics covered will include basic first aid, shelter and others based on class interest and instructor discretion. Program will be presented by park volunteer, Jeff Newton, who also teaches Fly Fishing 101 and has a great deal of experience in the outdoors. Program is free and open to the public. Please meet at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm. "Masked Bandits" - Fact or Fiction: Do raccoons wash their food? Find out the answer to this and much more about those furry little "masked bandits" at South Mountains State Park. Meet Ranger Amanda at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm to learn a few myths and legends as well as fun facts about raccoons. All ages welcome! Movie Premier Event to Help the Homeless
The Cleveland County Rescue Mission (CCRM) on Buffalo Street in Shelby has joined with PureFlix Studios and AMC Theatres to bring a red carpet movie premier to Shelby on Wednesday, October 18, 2017! Two showings of the anticipated "Same Kind of Different as Me" will take place at the AMC Classic 10 at the Cleveland Mall at 7:00 and 7:30pm before the movie opens to the public on October 20, 2017. CCRM has a limited number of tickets to the movie, and is offering a group discount to groups of 10 or more! All proceeds from the Red Carpet Premier will go directly to addressing the homeless needs in our community. The movie "Same Kind of Different as Me" is based on the inspiring true story of international art dealer Ron Hall (Greg Kinnear), who befriends a homeless man (Djimon Hounsou) in hopes of saving his struggling marriage to Debbie (Renee Zellweger), a woman whose dreams will lead all three of them on the most remarkable journey of their lives. Jon Voight plays Hall's father, with whom he reconciles thanks to the revelations of his new life. Family Caregivers Appreciation Brunch
The Shelby Mission Camp in partnership with ACCES (Accessing Cleveland County Elderly Services) will host a Family Caregivers Appreciation Brunch on Thursday, November 2, 2017, 11:00am till 1:00pm. The brunch will be held at the Shelby Mission Camp, 302 Sharpton Drive, Shelby, NC. All family caregivers and one guest are invited to attend at no charge. The purpose of this brunch is to give caregivers a break from the stress of caring for a loved one with a time of good food, fellowship and entertainment. There will be door prizes and information booths by organizations dedicated to ministering to our seniors and handicapped. CC Second Annual Veteran's Day Parade
The Cleveland County's Second Annual Veteran's Day Parade will be held Saturday, November 11, 2017, at 10:00am. Route begins at Lafayette and Graham Streets in Uptown Shelby. Includes bands, floats, Veteran organizations, city and county officials, classic vehicles and more. Parade followed by Veterans' Day Service on Shelby's Historic Court Square at 11:00am. The Burns High School Class of 1977 will be holding their 40th Class Reunion the weekend of October 6 and 7, 2017. The price is $35 per person.
