South Mountain Fire Rescue Fundraiser
South Mountain Fire Rescue, 8204 Gus Peeler Rd., Connelly Springs, NC will hold a BBQ and Bluegrass Fundraiser Saturday, September 9, 2017 at the South Mountain Fire Rescue in the very Southern end of Burke County. They have some great bands coming out that you will enjoy hearing. The cost for a plate of BBQ with baked beans, slaw, roll, dessert and a drink is $8. Saturday, September 9, 2017 - "Streamside Hike" - Join a Park Ranger for an easy walk to learn more about the Jacob Fork River. We'll talk about watersheds, common plants and animals, and water quality. Meet at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 11:00am. "Skulls & Skins" - Look for a Park Ranger and his interesting display of skulls and skins at the Visitor Center. Drop by between 2:00-3:00pm and hear about some of the animals that call South Mountains State Park home.
Sunday, September 10, 2017 - "Black Bears: Majestic Creatures of the Wild" - How dangerous are black bears? Can we coexist? Why are black bears so unique? What should I do if I see a black bear? The program will begin at 2:00 pm in the Visitor Center. "Fly Fishing 101" - Get Hooked! Join angler Jeff Newton at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm for an introductory class on fly fishing. Please bring all personal equipment available. Classes may vary based on interest and skill level of the participants. North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission fishing regulations still apply.

Program will be presented by park volunteer, Jeff Newton, who also teaches Fly Fishing 101 and has a great deal of experience in the outdoors. Program is free and open to the public. Please meet at the Visitor Center at 2:00pm.
Sunday, September 17, 2017 - "Masked Bandits" - Fact or Fiction: Do raccoons wash their food? Find out the answer to this and much more about those furry little "masked bandits" at South Mountains State Park. Meet Ranger Amanda at the Visitor Center at 2:00pm to learn a few myths and legends as well as fun facts about raccoons. All ages welcome! "Fly Fishing 101" - Get Hooked! Saturday, September 30, 2017 - "15th Annual Nature Day" - Join us from 11:00-3:00 for the 15th Annual Nature Day at the park. Broad River Alliance, Shelby
The Broad River Alliance will host a Fundraiser Event on Saturday, September 9, 2017, at Double Shoals Mill, 199 Old Mill Rd., Shelby, NC. This is a fundraiser event to raise money for the Broad River Alliance (which does a great job to keep the broad river shed clean) and also to help keep Double Shoals mill open. Suggested Donation of $10. There will be food (details to follow) and drinks for all. Schedule of events: 10:00am - 3:00pm. River Clean up. Bring water and a lunch. Be there and ready to begin at 10:00am. Band Schedule 3:00-4:30. Open and available 4:30-6:00. Dale Brittain Music 6-7; Roadside Alice 7-9; Bruised Rhino 9-til --- Luke, Brady, Todd, Rush. Camping is an additional $10 donation. Things to bring: camp chairs or blanket to sit on, outdoor games (corn hole, etc....), swim clothes to play in the river, tubes if you want to go tubing. and all of your friends and family! Crouse Community History & Photo Project
Crouse Community History & Photo Project is pleased to announce that Emilie Nelson, Director of NC Wildlife Rehab, will be the guest speaker at the Tuesday, September 12, 2017 meeting at 4:00pm, at the Crouse United Methodist Church fellowship hall, 3311 Crouse School Road, Crouse, NC. All meetings are free and open to the public. Everyone is cordially invited to attend and this will be a great meeting for young people. Emilie describes the wildlife sanctuary "We are independent Wildlife Rehabilitators with the purpose of helping sick, injured or orphaned wild animals and to release them back into their natural habitat. All animals are provided with a proper nutritional diet, nurtured, provided safe, enriched temporary housing, and medically treated as necessary." Joining Emilie, as additional guests, will be Bruschetta, an educational possum, and some baby squirrels for group members to interact with. Shelby Lions Club
The Shelby Lions Club will be distributing USDA Commodities on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at the Cleveland County Fair Ground. Those who wish to come to the fairground on Wednesday, September 13th and fill out an application will only need to give their home address and they must live in Cleveland County. Those unable to come in person, they may send a note stating the number in the family, their address and their whole family income, signed by them. The distribution is based on the number in the family and the income of the household.

With the end of summer approaching, the East Lincoln Community Center will resume their normal schedule with the following activities: Walking: Daily 8:30-11:30am; Pickleball: Monday 1-4:45pm and Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 1-3pm; Basketball: Tuesday and Wednesday 3:30-4:45pm; Senior Basketball: Thursday 3:30-4:45pm; Volleyball - Friday 1-4:50pm.
Lincoln County Apple Festival will be held on Saturday, September 16, 2017 for some football fun! The Parks and Recreation booth will be located on Main Street near Freedom Church.
Block Smith Gym, 130 Rhodes Street, will be reopening for the fall/winter season on Monday, September 25, 2017. It will open at 8:30am, Monday through Friday for walking. Pickleball will be held on Tuesdays, Senior Games practice/events will be held on Wednesdays, and Chair Volleyball will be held on Thursdays. The Cleveland/Lincoln County Rose Society will sponsor their 44th Annual Rose Show on Saturday, September 30, 2017. The rose show will be at the Cleveland County Agricultural Office, 130 South Post Road, Shelby, NC. (Hwy 180 next to Food Lion.) Entries will be accepted 7:00 - 10:00am. There is no registration fee and you do not have to be a member to enter roses. The rose show is open to the public 1:00pm - 4:00pm. Rose arrangements will be for sale and all show table roses for sale to the public when the show closes at 4:00pm on Saturday. The rose show is their gift to the community and they hope the public will 'take time to stop and smell the roses'. Shelby City Park & Rutherford County Senior Center Trip
Shelby City Park and Rutherford County Senior Center are taking a trip to the The Great Smoky Mountains by way of Train Tuesday, October 10, 2017. Taking a bus with Travel Lynx, load train in Bryson City where they will ride to Dillsboro, have lunch in Dillsboro, return back to Byson City, back on bus and return home. Leaving Shelby City Park at 7:30am; and leaving Rutherford County Senior Center at 8:00am. Leave Bryson City around 4:00pm to return to Rutherford County Senior center around 7:00pm and back in Shelby around 7:30pm. The cost is $95 per person and includes bus ride and ticket on train. This does not include lunch in Dillsboro. Sign up at Shelby City Park or Rutherford County Senior Center. Please pay with cash or check and make check to Travel Lynx.
