Nell Klyman Harand

Nell Klyman Harand died at home on August 1, 2016 at age 89. She was born on July 19, 1927 in Raleigh, NC to the late Harry H. and Helena D. Klyman. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Jacob Harand, her sister Katherine K. Acton and her brother, Kent D. Klyman.

After graduating from high school, Nell attended St. Mary's Junior College in Raleigh. While living in Raleigh, she was introduced to a basketball player from NC State College, Joe Harand. Nell and Joe married in 1950 and were married for 66 years until his death on June 1, 2016.

A member of Shelby Presbyterian Church, Nell was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She loved her family, and especially enjoyed spending time with them at Litchfield Beach. Her love of the beach was contagious to her children and grandchildren, and the legacy continues. She was also an avid game player, especially with cards. She would even sacrifice her first cup of coffee in the morning to appease her grandchild who was waiting to play Crazy Eights. A consummate chef, Nell had a flair for entertaining, and she instilled the art of both in each of her daughters. In addition, Nell had a wonderful sense of humor and a quick wit, which were demonstrated even on her death bed.

In the early 1990s, Nell enjoyed spending time at Marion Elementary School where her grandsons attended. She loved reading with the children and having lunch with them in the school cafeteria. All the children in the class looked forward to Nana joining them for lunch, and there was a reason. Never wanting to exclude anyone, she would treat every child in the class to ice cream!

Nell is survived by three daughters, Dian Smith (Jerry) of Winston-Salem, Lynn Hankins (Jack) of Charlotte, and Susan Young (Bill) of Shelby. Her daughters describe her as their greatest cheerleader and encourager. Always affirming, she could find a compliment to give them on their worst day. She is also survived by four grandchildren of whom she was very proud: Emily Davis (Josh), Julie Smith, Joe Young, Will Young, and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and Crematory on Wednesday, August 3, 2016 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. A private burial will be held for Nell and Joe at Sunset Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Cleveland County, PO Box 2001, Shelby, NC 28150
