Olan Rhodes Speagle
 Olan Rhodes Speagle, 88, of Shelby, died on Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.  A native of Catawba County in North Carolina, he is the son of the late Lafayette Arthur and Minnie Pearl Lingerfelt Speagle.  He is also preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Philbeck Speagle; sons, Jackie Dean Speagle and Dr. Lewis Edwin Speagle; and eight siblings.   

Mr. Speagle graduated from Gardner Webb College in 1941.  He was retired from BB&T after 42 years.  He served his country during World War II as a Staff Sergeant – Aerial Engineer in the 554th Army Air Force Base Unit at India Burma Theater and was awarded the Bronze Star.  He was a member of the Cattleman’s Association and past member of Shelby Jaycee’s, Shelby Lion’s Club, and Elk’s Lodge.  He was a member of First Baptist Church, 50 years, and a member of the Crusader Sunday School Class where he also served as treasurer and Sunday School Teacher.  He was also a member of the Baptist Men’s Association. 

Mr. Speagle is survived by his son, Kenneth Speagle, wife Jody of Burlington NC; his daughter, Sarah S. Neems of Shelby; three grandchildren, Lisa Vance, Tina S. Gray, and Andrew Neems; and 4 great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Friday, April 8, 2011 at the First Baptist Church Webb Chapel in Shelby.  The Rev. Tony Tench will be officiating.  Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery in Shelby.  The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00pm on Thursday, April 7, 2011 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home in Shelby.

Memorials may be given to donor’s choice.
