Priscilla Hamrick Mauney, 68, died peacefully Sunday, November 26, 2017, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. There she was surrounded by her loving family who will cherish and strive to emulate her goodness, her kindness, and her commitment to her faith, family, community, and friends. Her life was punctuated by consistent acts of kindness for all the lives she touched.
Priscilla was born June 11, 1949, in Gastonia, NC, the daughter of Pauline and John Thomas Hamrick of Bessemer City, NC. She attended Bessemer City High School, graduating in 1967. High School accomplishments were numerous, including her role as Drum Majorette for the High School Band directed by the greatly admired Donald Deal. Her love of music led her to Limestone College where she earned her Bachelor of Music degree in 1971.
In 1972, Priscilla began her teaching career at Belmont Central School in Belmont, NC, but later returned to Bessemer City, teaching 6th grade at Central Elementary School. During these years she established a children's choir that was widely acclaimed in Gaston County and duly received Teacher of the Year in Gaston County.
Community service was and continues to be a commitment in the lives of Priscilla and husband Dr. Jeff Mauney. Priscilla dedicated herself to the pursuit of quality education for all children of Kings Mountain and served on the Kings Mountain school board from 1987 to 1995. She also devoted her time and energy to the continued growth and viability of Kings Mountain's Historical Museum. She oversaw large-scale fundraising endeavors which could have earned her the title of project manager! She was reliable, efficient, and above all else, organized. Priscilla was also an active member in Daughters of the American Revolution, Women's Auxiliary of the North Carolina Podiatric Association, and a local bridge club with friends she enjoyed throughout her adult lifetime. She was the epitome of diversity! Work, work and then pleasure. Her bridge club was a composite of women devoted to the betterment of community and all engaged in service to others.
As an active member of Saint Matthew's Lutheran Church, Priscilla deemed herself to be a humble servant. She was always "on call" for kitchen duties, for hospitality events, or for any need that might present itself--timely fashion or not. She was a generous giver of time and talent, and shared her amazing gift, a lovely soprano voice, with the choir for 40 plus years.
Priscilla's greatest joy was the love she shared with her devoted husband, her two beautiful daughters, and the extended family who gathered often for family events and special trips. Much of her energy was expended on striving to bring joy and fulfilment to their lives. She was unreservedly generous and eternally grateful for the richness her family and dear friends brought to her life.
Priscilla is survived by her husband of 42 years, Dr. Jeff Mauney, her daughters, Elizabeth Mauney of Charlotte, NC, Margaret Boheler and husband Justin, of Kings Mountain, NC, her sister, Polly Hamrick of Winston Salem, NC, her niece, Alice Nicholson, husband Scott, and children Sarah Jane, John Paul, and Prescott of Hinsdale, IL, her nephew, Jeffrey Ulmer, of Strongsville, OH, and her loving lifelong friends Susan Patterson of Kings Mountain, NC, and Kathy Cheshire of Gastonia, NC. Extended loving family includes Jennie Gray, Dave, and Catherine Hinshaw of Winston Salem, NC, Tess Mauney and Paul Sampson of Fort Walton, FL, and Sarah Fisher, Joseph, and Tate Evans of Washington, D.C.
Priscilla was preceded in death by her parents John Thomas and Pauline Wesson Hamrick, brother John Thomas Hamrick, Jr., and sister Sarah Hamrick Ulmer.
The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m., Friday, December 1st at Harris Funeral Home, 108 South Piedmont Avenue, Kings Mountain, NC.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, December 2nd, at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, 201 N. Piedmont Avenue, Kings Mountain, NC, officiated by the Rev. Ed Crotty.
Interment will be held at 1 p.m. at Mountain Rest Cemetery, Kings Mountain.
