Ray Hoyle Smith
Dr. Ray Hoyle Smith, age 83 of 702 Spring Street, died peacefully July 2, 2013 at Hospice at Wendover.  He was born April 10, 1930, in Cleveland County, a son of the late Raymond Forest and Annie Heavner Hoyle Smith.  Dr. Smith was a 1951 graduate from The Citadel and joined the United States Army serving in Korea.  He then went on to earn a DDS from Emory University School of Dentistry in 1959. Dr. Smith was a member at First United Methodist Church,  a member of American Legion Post 100, a former member of the Lions Club and the Rotary Club, and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. He was known as “Mr. Fix It” and enjoyed computer, gardening, and traveling.  His greatest passions were the Eagle Scouts and his grandchildren.  He enjoyed every moment that he was blessed to share with his family and loved them dearly.
 
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Suzanne Lynn Smith, and a sister, Bette Sue Smith Rodgers.
 
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Shirley E. Homesley Smith, of the home; sons, Michael Homesley Smith, of Raleigh, and David Wendel Smith and wife, Martha Anne Caye Smith of Indianapolis, IN; grandsons, Samuel David Smith and Lucas Michael Smith, both of Indianapolis, IN; and niece, Leah Theresa Rodgers and nephew H. Curtiss Rodgers, III.
 
A Memorial Service will be held at First United Methodist Church in Cherryville on Friday, July 5, 2013 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Rick D. Fite officiating.  Burial will follow in City Memorial Cemetery.  The family will receive friends following the burial in the fellowship hall at First United Methodist Church.
