Gaffney -- Rev. Basil "Junior" William Whelchel Jr., 75, of 105 Ramsey Heights, passed away on Wednesday, October 5th, 2022, at Spartanburg Medical Center.

Born in Gaffney, SC, he was the husband of Patricia Howington Whelchel and the son of the late Basil Whelchel Sr. and Elizabeth Falls Childers. Junior formerly worked as a security guard for Brown Packing and was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church. He was an ordained minister. He was a former volunteer fireman, a member of the Rescue Squad of Hickory Grove, first responder at Cherokee County Memorial Hospital, and a volunteer at Gordon Mortuary.

Surviving Mr. Whelchel are his son, Jody Partin and wife, Judy; two daughters, Amy Gossett and husband, Mark, and Kristie Murray and Tom Downey; one brother, Paul Whelchel; three grandchildren, Joseph Hill Jr., Breanna Hill, and Chelsea Hill Hughes and husband, Johnathan; three great-grandchildren, Damion Isaiah Hughes, Joseph Devin Hughes, and Bentley Keith Hughes, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Whelchel was preceded in death by his father, Delmus Childers, his sister, Nancy E. Whelchel, and his brothers, Tommy Whelchel and Dwight David Whelchel.

The family will receive friends on Friday, October 7th, 2022, from 6:00 - 7:30 pm at Gordon Mortuary, 400 West Cherokee Street. Blacksburg, SC. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 8th, 2022 at 1:00 pm at Rock Springs Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Oakland Cemetery. Michael Whelchel, Brian Whelchel, Jerron Daves, Zack Parker, Wesley Parker, Mitchell Smith, and Sammy Powell will serve as pallbearers. Sam Parker and Bill Parker will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The family will be at the residence of his brother, Paul Whelchel at 331 Parker Road, Blacksburg, SC.
