Robert Allen Jones

Robert Allen Jones, 81, of Shelby joined his Lord and Savior on Monday, October 10, 2016 at Hospice of Cleveland County.

Robert, son of William Allen Jones and Hannah McCurry Jones and grandson of Mr. & Mrs. W. W. Jones and Mr. & Mrs. Robert McCurry, was born on October 26, 1934 in Shelby, NC. Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Banning Jones; both his parents and grandparents; sister, Peggy Jones Ware; brother and sister-in-law, Allen and Sonja Jones; brother-in-law, Jack Creech; and in-laws, Rev. Ralph and Estelle Banning.

Robert is survived by his son, Andy Winslow Jones and wife Michelle Whitley Jones; daughter, Laura Jones Beaver and husband Larry Beaver; grandchildren, Drew, Tate and Clay Jones and Kennedy and Brayden Beaver. He is also survived by his sibling, Lyman Jones and his wife Jean; and his in-laws, Jack Ware, Valeria Creech, Jack Banning and wife Carolyn, Doris Marlowe and husband Robert, and Dixie Rodgers and husband David.

Because Robert's father passed away before he was two years old, he and his siblings grew up on their Grandpa Jones' farm. He was raised as a young farm boy by his mother and under the leadership of Grandpa Jones. His grandpa taught him the value of honesty and good work habits which he carried with him throughout his life. Robert graduated from Boiling Springs High School in 1953 as president of his class. He worked most of his of life as a part time farmer and a plant manager in the fertilizer industry. Robert grew up in and became a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church where he supported all events. Throughout his life, he served as chairman of the Deacons and various major committees. On September 8, 1957, Robert married the love of his life, Betty Jean Banning of Edneyville, NC. He joined the Air National Guard in 1959 and served for six years. Robert and Betty were married 11 years before they were blessed with the adoption of Andy Winslow in 1968 and Laura Jean in 1971. They knew that it took children to make a home complete. Through his lifetime, Robert and Betty graciously used their gift of hospitality to create a home that was a haven of warmth and comfort for their grandchildren, family and friends. They hosted bountiful family gatherings around the holidays, family reunions and even class reunions since Robert's classmates were like family too! Robert and Betty were married for 54 years at the time of Betty's death.

Robert had a love for people and family history. Up until his health declined, Robert spent time visiting the shut-ins on a regular basis, taking them recordings of the church services and sweet treats. He was also known in the community as a family historian who could share stories and provide a wealth of information about those belonging to the Jones, Hamrick, McCurry, McMurry, Jarrett and Blanton families. Robert's faithfulness to his family and friends will be cherished and remembered for years to come. He is loved and will be missed by so many.

The Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, October 16th at Poplar Springs Baptist Church in Shelby, NC at 2:00 p.m. It will be followed by a graveside service and reception in the Family Life Center that will include the receiving of friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the WMU Scholarship Fund, Building Fund or Flower Fund at Poplar Springs Baptist Church, 1106 Poplar Springs Church Road, Shelby, NC 28152.
