Robert Charles "Bob" Smith, Sr.

Robert Charles "Bob" Smith, Sr. age 85 of Whitworth Rd. made the transition from this life on Tuesday, July 7, 2015. Bob was the youngest son of the late T. Walter and Mary Eurey Smith. He was born and reared in Cherryville, attending and graduating from Cherryville High School as president of his class. Bob served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict serving with the 28 Inf. Division (Bloody Bucket), serving in Germany for one year. After separation from the Army, he attended and graduated from Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC as member and president of IFC, The Interfraternity Council of Presbyterian College.

Bob worked with Hospice serving as a volunteer for ten years. He was a fifteen year member of Master Gardner's group of Gaston County. He was a sixty year member of American Legion Post #100. Bob was a member of First Wesleyan Church, having served on the Local Board and taught a Sunday school class for over thirty years. He worked at Carolina Freight Carriers as Manager of the salvage operation.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, John R. Smith and Thomas Walter Smith, Jr.; and an infant sister, Ruth Aileen Smith.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Evelyn Brackett Smith; son, Robert "Bobby" Smith, Jr. and wife, Darla of Maiden; daughter, Suzette Smith of Cherryville; sister-in-law, Helen Smith of Cherryville; special friends, Carl and Wendi Beam and his "adopted grandchildren," Tyler, Andrew, and Anna Grace Beam; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 10, 2015 at 3:00 PM at First Wesleyan Church with Rev. Mark B. Poe officiating. Burial will follow at City Memorial Cemetery with military honors conducted by American Legion Post #100 Honor Guard. The family will receive friends on Friday from 1:30 to 2:45 PM prior to the service at the church.
