Robert Melvin "Mel" Crocker,

Robert Melvin "Mel" Crocker, age 89 of Gastonia, passed away Friday, March 25, 2016 at Royal Park Skilled Nursing Facility in Matthews. He was born on June 9, 1926 in Mecklenburg County, the youngest of three sons to Herman Seburn and Opal Grace Carpenter Crocker. Mel was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church and a graduate of Lenoir Rhyne University. He was a long time resident of Gastonia and Crowder's Mountain. Mel was an avid golfer who was well known on the area courses. His love of golf allowed him to grow and maintain his own golf greens at his house where he could often be seen working on his short game. He was also a lifetime boater who built and designed his own cabin cruiser. Construction of the bow began in his bathtub where it quickly outgrew the space and his wife's patience. Mel's kindness, sense of humor, and adventurous spirit will be treasured and missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Crocker; and brother, Lewis Crocker.

Survivors include his children, Dr. Donna Crocker and husband, Leon Nelson Jr. of Chapin, SC, Steve Crocker and wife, Beverly of Belmont, and David Crocker and wife, Kathy of Dothan, AL; brother, Bois Crocker of Hickory; grandchildren, Loren Porter and Michelle Nirumandrad, both of Plano, TX, Josh Stroupe, Johnathon Stroupe, and Steven Crocker, all of Gastonia, and Laura Crocker of Dothan, AL; and five great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at 11:00 AM at St. Mark's Lutheran Church with Rev. Rick Sloop officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the burial.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 1203 St Marks Church Rd, Cherryville, NC 28021.

The family would like to acknowledge and thank the staff of Novant Hospice for their wonderful care.
