Rose Tisdale Tomlinson

Rose Tisdale Tomlinson was born 7th among ten children near Mayesville, SC to Louis Cleveland Tisdale and Henrietta Touchberry Tisdale. She was married to Charles M. Tomlinson, Jr. her husband of 68 years (and recently deceased in Sept. 2014). They were married at Alcolu, SC and moved to Fernandina Beach, FL in 1946.

Rose worked in the Crab Plant and then the lab at the Rayonier Mill and eventually became the manager of the Credit Union at the mill for the rest of her career. Family and friends remember Rose for her homemade pimiento cheese, shrimp salads, and macaroni and cheese along with "spoon burgers" which were her own version of sloppy joes. Occasionally she would join Virginia Peters to “cater” a reception for a family member or friend making party sandwiches that always included pimiento cheese.

She and Charles enjoyed life along the shore living in an old cottage right along the beach shortly after they were married. Rose was brave enough to put on a catcher's mitt and receive 90 mph fastballs when Charles needed to start his spring training for baseball season. This was typically done right down on the hard packed sand of the beach.

Her greatest challenge in life likely was when Charles lost his arm in a paper mill accident in the early 1950's. There is no question that this strengthened her faith and dedication to Christ as well as her dedication to supporting Charles. Through her strong faith as well as the support and encouragement of her family, the "Mill Family," and the old Seasiders baseball team, they overcame this adversity and achieved a life together that did not involve any concept of a handicap. Once this was achieved, a son, Chuck, was born in 1957.

Rose has been a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Fernandina Beach until recently moving to Cherryville, NC. She worked faithfully in the children's Sunday School helping with activities and playing the piano. She had a strong determination to influence children in their faith knowing the value of reaching children while their hearts are tender. She was also well known for hand writing so many cards of encouragement all through the years.

Rose Tomlinson is survived by her son, Charles M. Tomlinson, III (wife: Barbara), a granddaughter, Margaret Rose Adams (husband: Bob), and one sister, Miriam Griffing of Bethlehem, PA.
