She has been a teachers assistant, served on the Cleveland County Board of Education for over ten years, and as a county commissioner for one term, serving three years as chair. She serves or has served on numerous boards throughout the county and was involved in the process of bringing several industries to the Kings Mountain area during her service as a County Commissioner. She was instrumental in the development of the Character Education Program in the school system and realizes that children are our future and must be our top priority.
1. Why are you running for school board?
I will bring experience and dedication to the board. I will make a positive contribution and be a voice of reason. I have worked in the school system, have been a parent in the school system and have served the school system at the local and state level. I understand the importance of collaboration with other entities in the county and state and have built the relationships through the years to be able to achieve goals. I am a public servant at heart and have enjoyed serving our citizens in the past and would appreciate the opportunity to do so in the future.
2. What are the big issues the school board will face in the next four years?
The uncertainty of the state budget and the possible consequences at the local level, federal mandates being passed down to the local level, and issues facing our society as a whole making their ways into our schools are issues that the board will continue to have to address.
3. What are we doing right in the Cleveland County Schools? What are we doing wrong?
There are many good things happening in our school system. Graduation rates are at an all time high, there are lots of promising programs being implemented to address issues as they arise and as the theme of the recent "Close the Gap" summit stated, the system is "Supporting Student Success." There is always room for improvement and our school system continues to make changes as needed to strive to be the best school system in the state of North Carolina.
