Shirley Carpenter Hood, age 81 of E. Academy St. passed away on Friday, June 10, 2016 at Caromont Regional Medical Center. She was born on August 31, 1934 in Gaston County to the late William Cone Carpenter Sr. and Jane Vonn Daughety Carpenter. Shirley was a member of First Baptist Church and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was formerly employed at Carolina Freight and Gaston OBGYN. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, and being outside. Her greatest love was spending time with her family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Andrew Hood; sisters, Doris Faye Crawford and Sue Tallent; and infant brother, Charles Eugene Carpenter.
Survivors include her son, Michael Ray Hood (Susan) of Cherryville; daughters, Anita Lynn Hood and Susan Hood Lingerfelt (Barry), all of Cherryville; grandchildren, Shelly Hood, Sege Hood (Cassie), Kyndall Hood King (Derek), Preston Lingerfelt, and Lindsey Lingerfelt; great grandchildren, Payton, Paxon, and Piper Hood, and Carter, Kallie, and Cooper King; brothers, W. Cone Carpenter Jr. and J. Carroll Carpenter (Brenda); sisters, Jane Ann Carpenter (Darrell) and Elaine Neal (Garlin); and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 13, 2016 at 12:00 PM at First Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Vince Hefner officiating. Burial will follow at City Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday from 10:30 to 11:45 AM prior to the service at the church and at other times at the home of Barry and Susan Lingerfelt, 421 Roy Eaker Rd.
