Smithsonian Institution And Earl Scruggs Both Coming To Shelby

Destination Cleveland County (DCC) is proud to announce Earl Scruggs will be coming to Shelby with sons Gary and Randy for a special event at The Don Gibson Theatre, December 3 at 7:30 p.m.  The event, Earl Scruggs Family Reunion: Music & Stories, hosted by J.T. Scruggs, is part of the programming provided by DCC for the Smithsonian Institution New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music exhibit. The exhibit runs from November 13 through December 29 in the reception hall of the Gibson Theatre.

According to J.T. Scruggs, “The event was inspired by some film work done for The Earl Scruggs Center.  Earl, Randy, Gary and some others including Earl’s nephew Elam and I were sitting in the backyard playing music and talking and sharing stories.  It was such a great time we thought it would be neat if we could somehow create a similar experience for Scruggs fans.”

“Earl is represented in the New Harmonies exhibit as well as the local exhibit that DCC will contribute so we are pleased that Earl, Gary and Randy were willing to make possible this special event for the New Harmonies exhibit and the future Earl Scruggs Center.  Attendees will be offered a unique opportunity to hear music and stories from a world renowned musician and his family in an intimate 400-seat theatre. It will kind of be like Earl and his family talking and playing music in his living room” said Emily Epley, Executive Director of DCC.

The Earl Scruggs Center: Music & Stories of the Carolina Foothills will open in late 2011 in the 1907 historic courthouse in the center of Uptown Shelby.  It is a project of Destination Cleveland County, Inc., a non-profit 501(c)3 whose mission is to unite the county’s history, heritage, culture and arts to create a vibrant economy while embracing the future and preserving the past.

Tickets to the Earl Scruggs Family Reunion: Music & Stories event can be purchased online at www.dgshelby.com or at the Don Gibson Theatre ticket box office for $25 per ticket.  All tickets are for reserved seating.  Theatre Box Office phone is 704-487-8114.

New Harmonies:  Celebrating American Roots Music is part of Museum on Main Street, a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and the North Carolina Humanities Council, a statewide nonprofit and affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.  Support has been provided by the United States Congress.  For information about the New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music exhibit and for a complete calendar of related events, visit www.mydestinationcc.org.
