Stanley Marce Abernathy, 83, passed away Thursday, August 3, 2023 at his home.

He was a native of Halifax County, NC and a son of the late Stanley Abernathy, Sr. and Virginia Abernathy.

Stanley served in the US Army for six years, where he was stationed in Germany. He worked for many years at Fiber Industries before transitioning into a career as a computer systems technician. He installed computer systems all along the eastern seaboard, including the Savannah River Nuclear Site and R.J. Reynolds.

He loved working in his shop, playing chess, Canasta and Pinochle. Stanley enjoyed being outside, watching ball games, kayaking and hiking. He was involved in Sunday school at Buffalo Baptist Church where he was a member for 35 years. Stanley was a fun-loving person with a great sense of humor. It was not unusual to see him ride roller coasters or get into snowball fights.

Stanley is survived by his wife of 57 years, Virginia Abernathy; son, Ted Abernathy; daughter, Angela Stamey; brother, James Abernathy; grandchildren, Clay Stamey and Chayce Stamey and wife Dixie; and great granddaughter, Heidi Stamey.

Stanley is preceded in death by his sisters, Margie, Hattie Lee, Bernice, Clara Belle, Ethel and Prue Abernathy; and brothers, Roy and John Abernathy.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Doctors Without Borders, St. Jude Children's Hospital and Wendover Hospice.

There will be a memorial service on Sunday, August 6, 2023 at 3:00 PM at Buffalo Baptist Church, Shelby, NC, with Pastor Dustin Mace officiating. A visitation will be from 2:00 pm to 3:00 PM, before the service in the church sanctuary.
