Thru Hiker to present program at Senior Center
Easy Does It! The Welcome Wagon Club of Cleveland County will sponsor a presentation by “Easy One” at the Neal Senior Center on Thursday, October 9 at 10:30 AM. Easy One, The Appalachian Trail name of Lee Barry, finished his last “thru-hike” of the Appalachian Trail ten years ago, at age 81, the oldest person to do so.
Easy One will speak of his many hiking adventures over the years, including times he shared the Appalachian Trail with bears and other dangerous creatures, a few of the human variety.  He will desribe his gear, self-designed and sewed to fit his specific needs. Easy One’s stories of the folks along the Trail, including “Trail Angels” warm the heart. What happened when his boots wore out?  How did he keep warm in a wind-tossed tent surrounded by snow and sleet? How did he purify his drinking water? He will tell all!
Easy One credits luck and perseverance with making it possible for him to complete the Trail five times, three of which were over the course of several seasons and twice as a true-hiker. Easy One also credits his wife Lois, as being his “enabler”. Lois drove many thousands of miles over the years, dropping him off and picking him up at various points between Georgia and Maine.
Lee and Lois arrived in Shelby from Rochester, NY in 1973. Lee was the General Manager of the Fasco Controls Division and retired in 1988. They live in Shelby.
