Verdell Chineta Boyd “Chint” Martin

Mrs. Verdell Chineta Boyd “Chint” Martin, 78, of 215 Best Street, Apt. 5 Shelby, NC departed this life on Friday, December 20, 2013 at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center in Shelby.  She was born on November 19, 1935 in Cleveland County, NC to the late Joshua Felter Boyd and Cleo Patria Huddleston Ross.

At age 20, Verdell married the late Lloyd Edward Martin of Bassett, VA.  She was a housewife and stay at home mother to her six children.  In 1976, Verdell moved back to Shelby where she worked at Pat’s (Kitty’s) Café alongside her mother, step-father and sister.  Verdell was known for her great cooking and humble heart.  She was loving and giving to everyone she encountered and was a true inspiration and great mother figure to many.

In addition to her parents and husband, Verdell was preceded in death by her grandson, Charles Quincey Edward and her step-father, Edward “Kitty” Ross.

Verdell leaves to cherish fond memories of her, six beloved children, Karen Bell (Irvin) of Kings Mountain, NC, Sharon Clark (Victor) of San Diego, CA, Lloyd Edward Martin, Jr. “June” of San Francisco, CA, Patria Wicks “Bird” (Tommy) of San Diego, CA, Vonya Toms (Dwight) of Dallas, TX and Sherona Martin Hamrick of Shelby; raised as her own, Angie Early (Eugene) of Grover, NC; a sister, Hiawatha Maddox of Shelby; beloved as a daughter, Anita Cliette of Shelby; two aunts, Mary Lois Ellis and Claudia Maddox (James) both of Shelby; one uncle, Jesse Huddleston (Nell) of Shelby; a special longtime friend who was like a sister, Bernice Woods of Bassett, VA.  Also cherishing the memories are Verdell’s fourteen grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; two special caregivers, Brenda Gist Brooks and Walter Lee Daniels both of Shelby and an abundance of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

 

Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 27, 2013 at Shoal Creek Baptist Church at 2:00 PM with Pastor Michael Isaac officiating.  Burial will take place at church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at the church.  The family would like to thank Cleveland Pines Nursing Center, Hospice in Shelby and Dr. Sidhu and Piedmont Family Care for all of the care and support that was given to her and us.  Condolences can be expressed online at www.enloes.net.
