Victor Cherka, age 88, died Thursday, March 31, 2016 at Carolina's HealthCare System Cleveland. Born in Vermont on December 15, 1927 he was son of the late Charles Cherka and Anna Adams Cherka. Victor was a dedicated member of his church St. Mary's Help of Christians Catholic Church. He was an active member of the VFW and American Legion Post #155 in Kings Mountain. Victor was a veteran of Navy in WWII and the Army in the Korean War. Victor was an avid gardener and loved to grow Confederate Roses, he also grew fresh vegetables and enjoyed going to the flea market. Victor was a machinist and retired from Merita Bakery after 25 years of service. He is preceded in death by his brother, John Cherka; a daughter, Teresa Cherka Noyes; and one grandchild, Michael Muxie, III.
Victor is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Mary Greene Cherka, one son Preston Cherka and his wife Connie of Shelby, NC; three granddaughters, Nadine Dio and husband Richard of Long Island, NY; Mary Elizabeth "Liza" Goodwin and husband Greg of Rutherfordton, NC; Amy McPherson and husband Matt of Shelby, NC; and one grandson Steven Preston Cherka and wife Tammy of Shelby, NC. Victor is also survived by six great grandchildren, Melinda Muxie, Faith Cherka, Carolina Cherka, Eli Goodwin, Maddie McPherson and Camden McPherson.
Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, April 4, 2016 at 10:30AM at St. Mary's Help of Christians Catholic Church by Rev. Father Michael Kottar, Celebrant. Burial will follow with full Military Honors at Sunset Cemetery. Visitation will be at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and Crematory on Sunday, April 3, 2016 from 3:30-5:00pm and other times at the home of Preston and Connie Cherka; 2252 Taylor Road, Shelby, NC 28152.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the VFW, 3800 Margrace Road, Kings Mountain, NC 28086; or American Legion Post #155, 613 Gold Street, Kings Mountain, NC 28086
