Belwood - Wilburn P. Wellmon, 81, of 837 Belwood- Lawndale Road, Lawndale,
died Thursday, May 12, 2011 at his home.
Born in Davie County, he was a son of the late Wilson Pinkney Wellmon and
Bessie Lee Houser Wellmon.
Mr. Wellmon was a graduate of Belwood School, Gardner-Webb College and Texas
A & M. He was a retired vocational teacher in high school building trades
both in Texas and North Carolina. He was also a building contractor and
cattle farmer in the Belwood community. Using these skills, he worked with
youth through world missions trips to Chile and Mexico while living in Texas
and upon returning to North Carolina was involved with nine mission trips
through World Changers Missions in the United States. A member of Norman's
Grove Baptist Church, he taught the Ruth Sunday School Class. He served in
the Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Wellmon was preceded in death by a brother,
Perry Wellmon.
He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Marie Alair Wellmon; three sons,
Jerry Wellmon and wife, Michele of Kennesaw, Georgia, Glenn Wellmon and
wife, Julie of Dallas, Texas and Wyatt Wellmon of San Jose, California; two
grandsons, Josh Elmore of Dallas, Texas and Nicholas R. Wellmon of Atlanta,
Georgia;
brother, Carmel Wellmon and wife Ruth of Salisbury; sister, Margaret Jarvis
of Gastonia; three nieces, Gloria Thomas, Betty Barnett and Sharon Moss and
cousins galore.
Visitation: The family will greet friends Sunday immediately following the
service. A guest register is available at www.stameyfuneralhome.com.
Funeral: Sunday 3:00 PM at Norman's Grove Baptist Church with Revs.
Keith Huss and Cecil Buff officiating. The body will be placed in the
church one hour prior to the service.
Burial: Norman's Grove Baptist Church with military graveside honors.
