William Jennings Brooks, Jr.
After surviving cancer twice and enduring it with great strength a third time, William Jennings Brooks, Jr. (Bill) passed into eternal life on Sunday, May 1.  Bill was born in Shelby, North Carolina on September 17, 1946.  He graduated from the UNC School of Pharmacy and remained an avid UNC fan all his life.  Bill served Cleveland Healthcare as a Pharmacist for 37 years, 35 at Cleveland Regional Hospital and two years as the head pharmacist at Kings Mountain Hospital.  Bill chose hospital pharmacy because he felt that it gave him the best opportunity to help his community. Through his unwavering loyalty, attention to detail, and generosity, Bill touched many lives. Honesty, love for family, and his faith shaped everything he did.  Bill was a truly wonderful husband, father, and grandfather —always present with his love, support, and playful spirit.  He is survived by his wife and partner of forty-one years, Carolyn Spangler Brooks; his two sons and their wives, William J. Brooks III and Regan Medlin Brooks of Kings Mountain, NC; and James D. Brooks and Robin Elizabeth Brooks of York, SC; Four grandchildren, Lillian, Cooper, Gabriel, and Max Brooks.  Also, his parents, Jennings and Macy Brooks of Shelby, NC; two sisters and their husbands, Patsy Brooks Ellis and Mike Ellis of Richmond, Virginia; Penny Brooks Russ and Gary of Winston-Salem, NC; brother-in-law, Dr. A Neal Spangler, Jr. and wife, Joyce of Shelby, NC, four nieces, four nephews, three great-nieces and one great-nephew.  We celebrate and give deep thanks for his life.

A memorial service celebrating the life of Bill will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, May 6, 2011 at Shelby Presbyterian Church.  Dr. Luke Harkey and Rev. Lyn Byers will be officiating.  The family will receive friends from 7 – 8:30pm Thursday, May 5, 2011 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the American Cancer Society, 500 East Morehead Street, Charlotte NC 28202 or the Cleveland County Humane Society, 1609 East Marion Street, Shelby NC 28150
